Title: What internet connection do you have?
Post by: corsairk8 on February 01, 2002, 10:40:57 pm
In an effort to understand what connection the game should be optimised to work best on, I would like to know what connection you have to the internet.

Well, someone here has to be running off of 56k...? You wouldnt want to make the game all good and well for us quick connect people and have it be difficult for others to play. I remember having 56k, it was awful for most things... I suppose it just felt like that because I seen my friends comp wizzing around everywhere  :P

corsairk8, i have a suggestion, u could give 3 download options:

quick(low quality)
normal(med. quality)
best (high quality)

the quality meaning graphics, lower quality graphics=less lag, so us broadband users can play at a high speed and so can the 56k\'ers

The quality of the graphics will not effect the network throughput, and also the team does not have time to make three versions of all game graphics. If you meet the minimum requirements of the game you will not have any problems with system load caused by the 3d graphics.

I voted Adsl/Dsl but my speed isn\'t on 356kb/s as it stands in the vote thing, I got a boring speed of 0.5 mb/s
(why Didn\'t I choose Bonet, 2.5mb/s)

ISDN is totally rubbish, cost like 30 squid a month thn ya have to pay for isp thats like 10er so thats hmm  40 squid a month?? ADSL on the other hand is like 5 times quicker(if ure using dual lines on isdn) and works out at about 35 squid a month depending on ure area. And satellite aint expensive get it fo around 30 quid a month - but the best deal going probably is cable 512k, 25 squid a month for the line - isp included and normally if ya get cable internet or phone ya get the tv cheap n all :D but im still stuck with a f***ing 56k which i clocked to 64k :) I did have isdn but had to get rid of it cuz it wasnt compatible with my network protocols :\'( but unless ya gettin dual isdn (2 128k lines) its not worth getting. I would have cable but its not in my area :(

but t5 r00ls!!

im also on adsl, but u ahve to understand diffrent adsl types are in diffrent countries.. i mean, i hardly get 60kps on downstream..
dont go doing the game based on every1 having T3 lines ;/

spunky monky, u gotta keep in mind that kada el said there wasnt cable in her area, so there most  likely isnt dsl there either, since dsl has like 2 mile range or somehting on the site of its launch

Ok thn, adsl can be put through an analogue line(analogue meaning ure normal phone line) same with isdn - if u cant get these services it is most probably because u ure phone line is split between u and ure neighbour - this works fine for phoning ppl but when it comes to internet u connect at half what u should. I had a split phone line for many years, thn got a new 1 installed and got isdn put through it.. untill i realised it was a complete rip off compared to adsl so i asked my dad and the dumbass **** would\'nt listen to me so i managed to get him to take out isdn but i still got sum more pesterin to do b4 getting adsl ;)

remeebr there is 2 kinds of \"lag\" there is teh graphical which is nothing more than very low FR (FrameRate) and PC perforamnce usualy meaning your PC cant handle the huge amount of graphical data being feed it from teh programme (try running quake 3 at full everything on a 200 mhz PC with an 8meg voodoo2 like i do... the game is unplayable  :D , yet my modem speed of 56k is fine for a good smooth deathmatch, i just have to drop the graphical options down enough to get smooth game performace... the network performance is perfectly fine)... then you have the network lag... which is the delay of information through bottle necks and such across the internet... which doesnt slow down your game graphicaly but will cause your reactions adn others around you to have delays, like the UOP action delays, and the EQ players and monsters running on teh spot during a lag spike or when packets are being droped frequently.

No graphical data is transmitted across teh net in an online game... only things such as stats, actions, and the positions and states of 3d objects on screen and in your area. You can have a great PC and a shit modem and get bad \"lag\".. or have a great modem and low end PC and still get bad \"lag\" (if teh PC cant handle the graphical grunt of the game)... there is a big diferance between \"lag\" and \"game performance\"... but there often mistaken for each other by alot of people, especialy the surface gamers, who play the game but have never dived into the inner workings of games before, not that thats a bad thing.

im a rather outspocken team meber when it comes to keeping the Polycount realistic on things in the game... you need qaulity but you have to keep your game playable to a broad range of people with an equaly board range of PC horse power. So as far as \"game performace\" goes im doing my best to make sure its as good as it can be... for Network \"lag\" performance... talk to the network coders  :]

Framerate in a game like this can also be a factor of connection speed. I have a 56k modem, although my ISP sucks a good deal of ass, so the highest I get is 26,400 bps. Its horrible, because there are no other available ISP\'s for me.

eee... thats gay man, although i used to connect at 28.8k wit a 56k at first i thought it was jus freeserve but thn i changed to bt and connected at tha same... later on i realised that me and my neighbour shared a phone line so i got double lag :( so i got a new line put in

My computer is speedy, my connection is not. I bought my computer 6 months ago, it was as fast as they came then. 1ghz prosessor, 512 megs ram, 40 gig HD, etc etc. I cannot afford DSL, and cannot change connections in a locas ISP (as I said above) because there are no other local ISPs.
