Title: PlaneShift Client (without some bugs and with movierecorder)

Hi,

I compiled the latest stable from svn and made an installer out of it.
Till now it is only tested with openSUSE 11.1. If you want to give it a try, please post here. And ... Yes, you don't have to uninstall the official client.

Improvements:

You can either download the PlaneShift Client as a simple archive or install it.

The simple way (recommended)

You download the archive here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7IERXLHM
And extract it's contents anywhere you like on your system.

The advanced way

To install download the package: http://mirror.psde.de/util/ps_package/planeshift-0.4.03-3.x86.package (md5sum: 2d9fb99a536e766972bf083b8222efa5)
And install it. A manual can be found here: http://autopackage.sunsite.dk/docs/howto-install/

If you install the package system-wide, it will be put in /usr/share/planeshift/ or /usr/local/share/planeshift/.
If you install it for you only, it will be put in /home/<user>/.local/share/planeshift/

For both ways:

If you already have the official client installed, you can just copy the content of the "art" folder into the art folder of the new client.
In the client-folder are the following executables:
psclientThe Client itself.
pssetupThe Options Editor
psupdaterThe Updater
pslaunchA fusion of the Options Editor and thd Updater. It's an experimantal version!

About the movierecorder

The movierecorder can controlled as following:
KeyDescription
CTRL+Rstart/stop recording
CTRL+Ppause recording
The keys and the options for the movierecorder can be changed in data/config/movierecorder.cfg

Everytime you start recording, a new file named like "crystal001.nuv" will be created in the planeshift-folder.
These files can be converted with "mencoder (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/man/en/mplayer.1.html#GENERAL%20ENCODING%20OPTIONS%20(MENCODER%20ONLY))" from the "MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu) program".
To convert one of these files in an avi-movie type this:

Or use the following command to convert a .nuv-file into a mpg file with a resolution of 720:576 pixel

Just wanted to say that I'm very glad that you allow such community releases. I think that might even get more people to contribute to PS as you can immediately incorporate your work into a client and offer it for everyone who is interested. Perhaps that makes the user-mod community get going. There is so much stuff on the sourceforge user-mod svn server but most people probably don't use it because they have either no idea how to install it or don't know how to use subversion.

I'm impressed but it's a lot of work trying to maintain a package, we've had several in yast repos and ports for bsd, gentoo etc and they tend to fade quickly.
Not sure how this will enable people to contribute to PlaneShift the game even if it benefits parts of the community, the best most efficient way is to join us either by bug testing/patching (we have some devs now that started purely by offering patchesfor bugs) or as a propsective developer

The downside is we tend to get people coming for support from the Official team which can be awkward if you have no idea how something has been done.

Oh goodie!  A huge proliferation of different binaries!  :-)

This is exactly what we're trying to avoid by saying people need permission in the license.  This one seems positive and harmless but 50 different binary versions would be a nightmare.  I know it is difficult to maintain these sorts of things, so it is probably self-limiting, but let's keep it within reason people, ok?  :)

Hello

As far as I understand was this "player-release" created because of the annoying getting-stuck-bug and !leaf_replaced-crash. Planeshift probably lost quiet some players due to those bugs and the 'official' client never got updated, regardless that it would have been possible to release a client without these problems.

You can run the game itself by typing "planeshift" in the console. Type "planeshift-setup" for the configuration "planeshift-updater" for the updater and "planeshift-launch" for an experimental merge of pssetup and the updater.

No. It's only 32bit version but it will run on 64bit machines, too.

I know this question might sound stupid, but my english is not well, and I need help with that : /
I have found /usr/share/planeshift/, and If i understand correctly, I have to copy "art" folder from PlaneShift's original direction to this folder, right? Because if yes, then can you tell me step-by-step how to do that on Ubuntu, if I can't do it just with CTRL+C, CTRL+V?

Ok, thanks for that. I copied the art folder. But now, when I want to launch any file from that new dir, nothing happen. Only "pslaunch" open black window for about a second, but it quit itself : /

seem to be having the same problem as tensiu
last line from dmesg   [ 5315.129818] pssetup.bin[24024]: segfault at 187d ip 084a9e4e sp bffb28d0 error 4 in pssetup.bin[8048000+4f1000]

cant seem to find an error log in usr/share/planeshift

running on Ubuntu  Jaunty

Does it output something on the console before segfaulting?
