Title: Zephan's PlaneShift Sketchbook
Post by: Zephan on June 18, 2009, 10:25:12 am
Hello, I'm known in-game as Zephan Cystennin (a Dermorian), and I've been playing PlaneShift for a little over two months as of this posting. I guess it's somewhat appropriate that my first forum post would be an art-related one, because doodling/sketching is one of my favorite pastimes. :) Due to many factors both RL and online, I hadn't picked up a pencil and seriously tried drawing again until recently.

So far, I've got here a concept sketch of male and female Enkidukai. I hope to eventually post more of other races and traditionally/digitally colored work here as well.

Your comments are welcome. :) Thank you very much.

Hello,

if you would like to help improve Planeshift you can join the "Contribution Project" http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=35423.0 (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=35423.0). We need people like you who can sketch. There are many items in the game which do not have a 2D/3D representation. If you like you can think of how these items could look and sketch them. That helps people who have to model them.

Honestly, these sketches should be coloured and then replace the outdated ones on planeshift.it

They're just SO good, they embody everything you see in the average RPing Enkidukai player.

Ever consider doing in game sketches for other players ?

ie . take screenshot sketch it, and then give it to them ( not sure , might be able to embed an image into a map ? )

I Like it!  \\o// I like how the faces, hands, and feet were done. It's a nice way of making them cat like and still humanoid.  :D

And that's actually the way the character models are ingame. Good job Zephan! Keep the drawings coming!

I look forward to seeing more. ^_^

Like it a lot.

I agree with the one above, saying that your art is suitable for replacing the old sketches on the website.
Can't wait to see it in coulor. Maybe soon?

Please consider helping with the art-team. You can help the game by contributing your work if you agree with the license.

Good work, i (we) hope to see more

Thank you for the comments! As my luck goes, now I'm having trouble producing anything I believe is worth showing, but I do have some more sketches in the works (Kran or Klyros was next on the list).

Admittedly, I am more confident with character concepts and figure drawing than I am with anything else, but I'd be happy to help and contribute to the project when I'm able.

This is what some people term a "sketchdump" - a bunch of sketches on one page (because at the time, I couldn't be bothered to separate the drawings into their own files):

(http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/uu160/zephancastaignede/th_zephan-pssketchdump001.png) (http://s643.photobucket.com/albums/uu160/zephancastaignede/?action=view&current=zephan-pssketchdump001.png)

A Kran, a Dermorian female, an angry menki, a Dermorian male (actually a doodle of my in-game persona) and a Klyros. Pradon the unfinished-ness, but I'd rather quit while I haven't ruined them yet.

That's what "sketch" means ... leaving an impression that stimulates the imagination.

I am quite impressed by the displayed character attributes and emotions - you obviously got some cartoon experience. They all show some shades of confidence and determination...

Show me a really happy face with such a level of emotional expression, and I ... uhm ...  :-[

Melly walks in and takes a look at the sketches with interest. Her jaw drops.
"Zephan, your artworks are utterly stunning! I'd love to see more of them. You've got true talent!"

Melly claps her hands and thinks Zephan should definitely join the contribution project!  \\o//

Thank you again for the feedback. :) Like a newb, it's only now that I poked around photobucket to find the thumbnail feature - image posts have been edited to show them.

I'll have a read though the fan art project then, thanks!

just to let you know, your photobucket account is currently set to public, so clicking on one image link takes you to your album page when anyone can browse through all your stuff....

not that big a deal for your account atm, but if you plan to be like me and have a WoW section, a PS section , and other types of sections, you may want to mark the account as private so that only the people you want to see your whole account will see it.

also, funny llama you got there.  :P

I feel like I'm a bit late with this but what the heck.
Excellent drawing style, in my opinion. You've managed to put a whole lot of character in the few lines you use for the face, which I think takes quite a good understanding of facial expressions. Also, the way you draw, I can tell the sketches are yours just by the style. I like the kran and the klyros most so far, as the kran has an interestingly chiseled appearance that imbues a lot of life in kra and the klyros is a well-drawn depiction female klyros, which I don't think is drawn that often or that well. She gives the appearance of being very lightweight, as if she could soar up into the sky in a moment's notice. Graceful is another fitting word. Maybe another aspect of you style is depicting movement well in your art, just as you can depict expression.

Itching for more.

I think the picture of Illysia is good.  :D Particularly as the expression is quite accurate... Poor Illy, if she isn't smiling that is likely the look on her face and it is sure to be followed by a sigh. But I think its a cute pic though.  \\o//

Calluna is cute too and I like the charmflower detail. She looks very sweet in the picture.  :) And for Timmothy, don't tempt him... he would save up his money.  :P

So Calluna's helped me get my drawing hand back in motion by writing a backstory for our characters (coming soon)... and I also have a random Klyros, in preparation for a pic I'll be drawing for a couple friends.

Confess, you are a professional book illustrator!

I wish... (thanks LigH :P)

Zephan what tools are you using to draw like that? Tips pleaseeeee

A Wacom art tablet, and Corel Painter, mostly using the Scratchboard Tool from the pens category, for the sharp cel-shaded look. It's also possible to do this in Photoshop, but for me Painter gets it done more quickly because I get the artistic effect I want almost immediately. I'm pretty much trying to copy the effect of a brushpen which I have a hard time finding in local stores... I find digital media relatively more convenient anyway because I don't run out of ink and it's easier to correct mistakes. :D

Going to try and have a representation of each race soon... though I'm obviously inspired by some more than others... X-/
