Just interested, what is considered a profane or exclamatory word in PlaneShift?
I've heard:
Gods
Dakkru
etc., and am interested to see what else there is. I can think of quite a few others, but what's considered IC and not?
-
I've used "Treppor Dung!" a few times ... though I think this sounds a little corny ;D
-
That one's not too bad.
I've used other bodily references before too :P
-
say something incomprehensible to Harny or Jayose ;)
-
How about something similar to "Hol's der Teufel!" / "Чёрт возьми!" (Curse him! / Go to hell!) -- "(May) Dakkru take you (it / him)!"
Furthermore - "Where/Why/Who in Dakkru's name ... ?!"
-
I like to use dakkru similar to how davey jones is used in pirate lore.
'I'll send you straight to dakkru'
I would assume for the bodily references tamed animals would be more apt. we dont say 'lion @$T$!' or 'killer swarm of bees!'
we say 'bull #$^#' and references to other obscene topics. So I think the key to finding PS suitable swear words would be discovering what is considered obscene.
perhaps general things assosciated with unpleasantness. goujah are the gross smelly pack animals right?
'we need to crawl through the sewers' 'oh thats goujah!' midway crawling through 'this place is so goujah'.
the biggest obstacle is that the unpleasantries are a very ill defined area by settings (not trying to crap you guys, its just people are more interested in laanx then goujah) and as players we dont want to deviate from the canon, so we're left with little material to base our linguistics off.
-
I think what's makes this tricky too is that in rl one typically uses words that are considered taboo or forbidden to add a little extra shock value. Since there is no equivalent here swearing just doesn't have the same flavor. ( I am assuming that part of the goal here is to find creative ways to swear without using real swear words ... Like sh*t, f**k y**, m*th*rf**er, d***ksu***r ... Etc ... )
xD
-
Right. What are considered 'shocking' to everyday citizens of Yliakum?
-
Shocking? Hmm maybe someone running around screaming "Curse Talad" would shock them. As well as make them get as far away from that person as possible :D
-
The never mentioned B. (Black Flame) could be a theme nobody talks about but evrybody maybe know or at least heard about, so some bad curses are maybe: "By the Fall of Kadaikos" similar to "What the hell...?" but still shocking because people are more feared by this evil god/religion than dakkru. And Black Flame is a taboo theme.
And mentioning different monters are also fittin well because there are many in YLiakum.
"gobble brain", "trepor dung" as said, "You child of a Tefu", whatever
-
Genital references probably would still be used, (warning, on that one though :-[)
-
you'll note we've provided some more colorful language in the release.
-
Though this isnt swearing... pehaps a smile spoken curse would be equally offensive or perhaps threatening if it touches on superstition... or threatened one's basic survival needs
/me glare's evily at XYZs child for a moment ( an adaption of the "evil eye" )
"May Laanx ignore the shadows in your path"
These aren't great examples... but it conveys the idea
-
May your path through the Death Realm be arduous and unfulfilled.
-
i believe in a book in the library Gregori S. says to get your maggot carcuss to the arena

In this topic http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=23667.0 (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=23667.0) under Words of the Klyron Language you will find the expression "Galerazi!" which is used as a curse word and can be used to curse someone aswell. Not very useful to other races though, unless you get into a fight with a Bluey Wingy Thingy ;)
-
Just talk to Trasok about the Clan symbol and Lorytia Starhammer... I thought his verbage was a little over the top... until I finished the quest... :(
-
Trasok is in fact a good reference ;D
-
Well, I wouldn't call it a curse per se, but one of my characters tends to exclaim "Laanx's Mask!" when he's shocked. :P

Ah, sorry... I just thought he was sneezing. ;D

Personally, I like to think that this is a game for mature audiences and that no curse words can exceed the quality of the ones we use IRL.
Or maybe it's more that I find 99% of made up 'medieval fantasy' curse words to be so utterly ridiculous.

Personally, I like to think that this is a game for mature audiences
Actually the game isn't necessarily for a "Mature" audience we want to attract a wide range of ages and and being mature doesn't automatically mean a liking of swearwords btw my son played and actually roleplayed when he was 12 and I would not allow him to use cursewords in rl so I see no reason to be subjected to them in game.
-
Admittedly it's for an audience of all ages, but those who gain the most enjoyment from it are those mature enough to understand it's complexities. For others, it'll be great fun, sure. But immersive roleplay is -usually- grasped by those older in age. Mind you, I said -usually-, not all the time. There are exceptions.
-
I like to use "Death Realm" as a curse, as in "Go to the Death Realm!" Or, to simplify, "Go to the DR!" Bet you can't guess what that's supposed to replace. <<wink>>
However in a more metaphorical sense when I speak with certain friends, "Road to BD" has come up as that's a LOT more tedious than getting out of the DR.
-
That sounds like "Road to Eagle Rock" could get similar to "Road to Canossa"... :D
-
Yeah. Exaggerations using PS places or scenarios is definitely doable.
My favorite is a simple "Oh, Gods."
-
Here is a few ive said several times
that sucks trepor sacks! (egg sacks of course)
you have the heart of a Grendel!
May laanx strike you down
and my perosonal favorite
may dakkru visit you in your sleep so the first thing you wake up to is the agony of the death realm!
