Title: Linux and Planeshift is it worth it?
Post by: Jodias on July 09, 2009, 09:55:49 pm
Hello!

My hubby recently gave me a linux machine after my computer decided to die on me:). I used to play everquest, eq2 and world of warcraft but was looking for more of a "rp" type of a game where people actually roleplay!.

I have read alot of the posts but I am still asking myself, Linux and Planeshift is it worth it? is it alot of hassle? I know the game is essentially still being built but how much play time do you really have between bugs, errors and so forth?.

Do you find it easier running the Linux version , or the Windows using WINE?

thanks in advance!

Easier?

Probably WINE.

Better? Compile it yourself. Honestly, it's not hard, we have a build guide that leads you through the whole process (relevant: http://tinyurl.com/4d9hx5).

IMHO, it's worth it, do it.

Hello,

the current linux release will probably have some problems, but 'mooner' released an updated client for linux without those bugs.

Generally speaking runs planeshift on my linux as well as on windows, so yes, its definetly worth it  :)

[ In case you decide to compile yourself, bring some patience with you for the first time and come to irc (irc.freenode.net channel #planeshift-build) - There people will help you getting it running. ]

You have to be pretty dedicated to play through the bugs right now.  Even the wine version won't run (for me anyway) sometimes, and still has crashes.  The real issue here is the lack of new versions.  This current one is very bad for linux, and has been around forever.  Before this, new versions came along often enough to make it worth dealing with particular problems for a while.  Many of the worst issues have been fixed in development, so a new release or building your own might solve the problems.

As has been said compiling your own client is fairly easy and you do end up with a slightly faster client, there is plenty of help and advice available on irc.freenode.net #planeshift-build

Also a quick look around the forum would give you this http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=35424.msg406192#msg406192 a precompiled binary with the leaf bug removed.
