Title: Mellas' Little Sketchbook
Post by: MellasFenixxes on July 11, 2009, 06:27:24 pm
Melly walks in carrying her sketchbook under her arm. She waves excitedly.  \\o//

Haya everybody!
I'm that blonde nolthrir jumping around here and there xD
I figured I should post here sometime, seeing that Planeshift is a great inspiration to me. <3
Here is my drawing of an ynnwn. It's based on Odinsdi, though I still have to check with him if he agrees on the design. :)
Also, it's not completely done yet and prone to change. I still have lots to learn :-[

(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/MellasFenixxes/th_ynnwn2.jpg) (http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/MellasFenixxes/?action=view&current=ynnwn2.jpg)

Thank you for looking! <3
Now I'm off to admire the other great artists here :D

Much huggles,
~ Melly

Wow, I'm rather impressed with the shading work and effort put into this. Good piece of work for sure.

Beautiful drawing and composition!
Great work there Mellas. \o/

Now, if you let me drop some constructive criticism... ;)
(I know, if somebody had to turn up with whining it had to be me. XD)
As I said, love the picture and hey, he looks real handsome but I get the impression he's more or less human sized.
Probably, and I understand this is too much to change it now, a smaller (http://www.campeverett.com/images/felix.gif) head (http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/07/11/article-0-01EB960900000578-580_468x379.jpg) (see heads proportions in both pics) would do for giving that feeling.
Maybe you can add something else (props or something in the BG) to it that can stick out the size instead?
Just a humble suggestion, hope it helps somehow. o/

Keep those drawings coming!

Thank you all so much for the kind replies! <3
I'm glad to hear you think so Llyn! :)
Tadano, I have some ideas for Melly lying around. It involves water buckets for sure xD

/me nods at Lhaa.
You're completely right, I noticed that myself! I have been brainstorming over things I could add to indicate his ynnwn-size. Haven't really come up with something that could actually work yet, but I can make the background expand anytime to work something out. Any crits are more than welcome, thank you very muchly for taking the time to point that out Lhaa! :D Very sweet of you! *hugs*

As already mentioned the shading is quite well done. Personally, I also like the expression of the face, sort of inspired determination mingled with self-confidence.  Furthermore, I like the clarity of the picture and the interesting angle of the figure, as well as the foreshortening of the axe. The way you shaded the clouds is interesting.
On the topic of trying to give the impression of height, I think the pickax on his back is too large in proportion to the rest of his body. It just seems to dwarf him a little...
I'm afraid I can't think of anything to add to the background to help with proportions though..

Anyways, very nice! I'll be looking forward to more of your art.

It's been a while, but I'm going to pick up my pencils this year again!
I'm very inspired to draw the various races and creatures, so let's hope I can get some things done.
These are a few scribbles from last year; and I'm very happy with the third one.

My try at Nolthrir Plate Armor design. I tried to keep the seaweed-ish jewellery around the neck into it, and a shell kind of feel for the platemail. It was great fun to do!

(http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/MellasFenixxes/th_N-armor1.jpg) (http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/MellasFenixxes/?action=view&current=N-armor1.jpg)

These are two scribbles of elves and ynnwns, based on Jacula and Mellas.
The first one was a lineart I made at work, it isn't finished, but I still like it enough just to share.
I'd say the sketch shows the two characters better, but I still have a lot to practise before I really caught their feel, for now I'm just experimenting a bit. :)

Very romantic drawing of Jacula and Mellas.  So many talented artists in the PS community  \\o//. I don't have that talent, but I'm glad those of you who have the talent are willing to share with us.

Very nice armor Mellas. I always had trouble with armors.  :D And very good on the faces. Faces can make or break a character. \\o//

Mellas I challenge you to a draw off.

Here is a little something that is similiar to what I do.

That's an interesting idea, it can be.  ;D
Haven't really thought about it that way.

Thanks so much for the encouraging comments!

Hi PS!

I've been working on a new character design since Mellas has permadied. :)
After all I'd like to start RPing again, and see if there's still some fun to be had in PS.
So here's another nolthrir. I'm not sure whether I'm completely happy with it, but it's a start. :D

Nice work, welcome back to PS! So many good artists around, and so hard to find contributors for PS artwork :( Devs should really consider allowing more permissive licensing for PS art if they want the game to improve visually at all.

Thank you all for the kind comments! :)

Jacula and Dannae: I really admire your works as well, let's keep those creative juices flowing! Looking forward to seeing more of your artworks too!

Gilrond: You're right, there's plenty of amazing artists on PS! In my case, I don't have the time, and I'm not working for free unless extremely inspired to do so. Also, I'm only a student, I still have tons to learn before I'd be working on the art for an official game.

Rigwyn: I'm quite sure you know the character who wrote that book ;)

The book case has a kind of anti-perspective distortion; I believe the side which is held in the hand should be a bit shorter than the side at the spine, because it is a bit further away from the viewer.

But that's the only hagging little flaw. Overall, the image is a great illustration!

Very nice style and interesting clothing design as well. But it looks like it might not be as comfortable in water. :D

I guess she will change clothes - one for the air, one for the water. "When in Hydlaa, do like the Hydlaans do."

Ligh: Thank you for pointing that out, I can safely say that I didn't really pay any attention to that little detail at all, but I'll keep it in mind for the next time ;) Much appreciated!

Illysia: Thank you! And you've made a fair point. Maybe she's wearing some better water-clothing underneath this outfit ;)

I'm not sure why, but I really like her hand (the one holding up the CW[?] globe of light). Probably mostly because I find hands incredibly difficult to draw.

Post by: MellasFenixxes on February 10, 2012, 05:05:44 pm
Thank you Mariana! I really love drawing hands, they can be very expressive by themselves :)

Here's a quick doodle I did of a random fenki. I think I messed up a bit on the PlaneShift design with her hair, and something doesn't feel right about the feet, but I like it none the less :)

she's also missing her tail...

it's a pet peeve of mine to see enki portrayed with human hair, but i'll look past that. I really like your style Mellas.

Post by: MellasFenixxes on February 10, 2012, 05:18:31 pm
Haha! You're completely right, SHAME on me! I'm going to add that tail. I think I added the hair because she looks so bald without it, but I'll double check on that too :)
Title: Re: Mellas' Little Sketchbook
Post by: Mariana Xiechai on February 10, 2012, 06:42:36 pm
A very nice image indeed. I like her expression, it's very playful, and matches her posture. Though I'm with Aramara on the hair...I feel like some believe fenki aren't feminine without long flowing locks. I'd just disagree with that sentiment, I mean, have you ever looked at a bengal tiger and thought, "Damn, that thing's HIDEOUS." Probably not. I imagine enki possess this kind of beauty, regal, maybe even feral. That's just personal preference though, I'm not sure if settings specifically state that enki do or do not have longer hair on their heads.

Actually the idea of enki cubs sounds really adorable, maybe I should try to draw that too <3

Here's an updated version of the fenki, I added the tail and got rid of the hair. It took me a while to get the face right without the hair, but I think it turned out alright. At least, I hope so :)

I think it looks great! You still were able to retain a sense of femininity without the hair. I'm guessing that since you were able to make such adjustments cleanly that this is a digital drawing?

(at risk of sounding nitpicky of other peoples' work, you may want to reconsider just where that tail is growing out of ;P)

Really good comic style. Could become a regular web comic even ...

Post by: MellasFenixxes on February 12, 2012, 02:08:35 am
Aramara: XD I had a bit of trouble in that area actually, but I think I can fix that in the colored version :) And no, it's not digital, I did the adjustments with pencil (added a little random shading) and scanned it in anew. I did remove some of the messy lines with photoshop. Glad you think it looks great none the less! ;)

Mariana: Sometimes I wish my style was more realistic than cartoonish, but I can't seem to get rid of it xD Thank you though! :)

Ligh: Thank you! Must be a good sign, since I'm actually studying Comic Design! I'd like to get a weekly comic started when I have a graphic tablet, my mouse will do an RSI attack on me VERY soon T_T

Here's another concept of an elf I've been working on for a LONG time. I'm finally going to consider it finished tonight and move on to other projects. (PlaneShift is inspiring me! :D )  The colors are a bit unstable in this one, so I'm not sure how it shows up on different monitors.

Looks like some kind of magnetic or magic bow by the way, since it has no string :)

Well, that is correct! I made the sketch a long time ago with the idea of the bow having eyes and shooting the arrow with it's own energy. The eyes would guide the arrow to follow the one it was aimed at no matter what move they made to evade, and the energy that builds up in the bow is based on the strength of the person holding the bow and decides the speed and efficiency of the arrow. :)
