Title: Building
Post by: Temrus on May 06, 2003, 06:32:48 pm
I thought maybe it would be a good idea if you could build underground passageways aswell as houses. By doing this allied guilds would be able to link guilds with underground passageways you could also use them as store rooms or tunnels into and out of towns.

That would be cool, especially since you may want to keep your guilds primary base secret. You could have a tunnel in the middle of nowhere, and use it ot get to the middle of the town. :)

Yes, but sadly it\'s not an easy task. This subject has been discussed earlier and I don\'t think that it was possible to do because of the game-engine.

maybe the game could be already programmed with some secret rooms, nd their door would have just the same texture as the wall, so that you wouldn\'t see it if you don\'t know it is there. But those of the guild are aware of the location of the door (or of the mecanism to open it) so that they have no problem to get in it.

This is an easy to program solution, and it would bring some fun : you couldn\'t open your secret door as long as you\'re not alone, and spies could follow you to find out where the mecanism is.
An other solution is to give a password to the door (for example, you have to say \"/say sesame open yourself\" and the door would open, and the guild leader only could change the password. Then spies would have a very interresting role to play :)

thynett is right. every time someone dig a tunel u would have to download it when logging. and as guild highquaters will eventualy become avilable everyone should get a secret door for the purposes of the guild.
Title: The mechanism doors

I like the idea of special mechanism\'s for doors. I am a spy and a thief so i would have a lot of fun with that ashame about the underground passage\'s though =(.

I don\'t think devs will be able to create tunels in real time; it would require a tech like Red Faction engine, unless everytime someone need a tunnel, world modelers modify the world.

So another solution might be to have portals (teleport things). They could appear when you say the password, opening a way to the guild. Only great magicians could build portals, and maybe they would have to regularly give them enough energy, I dunno, many things can be done here ;)
Spies could still be useful, as everyone could use the portal with the right password, or maybe even without password, they could pass just after a guild member go through the portal.
So portals could lead everywhere, and powerful guilds could maintain great portals webs so as to be powerful everywhere in the world ^^ (thought great magic would be needed).
Technically, it would just need a portal model, which could be treated as a character for example. Anyway it\'s easier - technically - to add matteer (the portal) than to dig tunnels :p

Now maybe the teleport thing isn\'t a good idea, I don\'t know. It need to be... brainstormed more ;)

Is there any way to script doors to allow only Guild members in?

It\'s possible to make static caves and tunnels.

But why limit ourselves to the underground?? Why not make an entire city floating above in the sky?

The newbies at the bottom will be in awe of the big city above, and will strive to work on buying levitation potions or buying a flying mount in order to get there.

Well, yeah, but its the whole server\'s layout pretty much already decided?

and imagine having to download all those pieces everyday there would be a new one... maybe there should be a seperate guild download so u can download things ur guild adds to the game and only ur guild so no one else can access it... just a thought

I was just wondering if you will beable to smash in windows and stuff. I think it would be good to give non thiefs a chance at opening locked doors that different doors had different strengths and stability. This was characters who have a lot of strength skills on could knock down the door. Mages could also have a spells which can possibly open locked doors this way it will give non-thiefs a chance to open doors the only problem with this is then it will ruin the role of thiefs unlocking doors so u would have to restrict these sklls a bit

Well, it is NOT the problem of the engine. The engine is fully capable of doing red faction-things effects. It is ONLY a matter of good programming. The bigger problem is network: how do you tell the other players, that \"There 345 pieces of triangles should be modified, to look like a blown hole...\" That would introduce real lag (not low FPS - but slow network). This is the problem, not the engine particularly.

And about portals: they have a slightly different meaning in technical 3D. The so called \"portal-technique\" is used in CS. There are already portals: for example the entrance to the temple, the well in the temple, etc. They are used to connect \"sectors\" (collection of geometry).

it would be cool but would take a lot of modification.  i think it would overload the game.

Yes. But, you know, it is easier to add neat visual effects to not-online games. You don\'t have to send through any info over the net.

I have question though: does red faction have a multiplayer mode?
