Title: character names -- why?
Post by: deadwolf on September 30, 2009, 12:27:42 am
Hi:

So why can't my character have the same first or last name as other characters? I can understand why any combination might be problematic, but many people named "Dave" in the world -- as long as they have different last names -- shouldn't be that much of a problem... And there are millions of Smiths in the world...

Thanks,

DW

hello!

one reason might be that when sending a /tell or inviting to a group or guild you only use the first name
also some of the older chars dont have last names so it could get confusing

is better this current system, gives unique names, is one of my favourite features of the game
i never found trouble to find a name that i wanted to
only need to think a bit

besides, this is not a bug before entering the game, is more like a wish to the wish list

From a programmer's point of view: Dataset fields used as "identifier" must be unique...

If the first names alone shall not be identifying anymore, a major part of the database management would need to be rewritten. That will surely not happen "soon (tm)".

Thanks Laanx  :sweatdrop:, I would not really like anyone using my name just because he/she's lacking imagination!

This does sort of raise the question of "why are last names necessary?". Except maybe to differentiate between us "noobs" and the "real" players...  :offtopic:

Naah ... but it might already be a preparation for a coming era of "first name + family name" as identifier?!
