Title: Client not working.
Post by: Frois on November 12, 2009, 01:11:43 am
Hello. I have been playing Planeshift for a lil while and now the client won't start. I double click the icon and it shows the picture with the hut and the lil guy then a problem windows opens saying to me: Something unexpected happened in PlaneShift: Steel Blue Details: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION at 004B34E

Also I had put the whole folder onto my USB key in order to play on another computer which worked but now I try to do that same thing on the computer where I get the problem and it pops the same windows except that the code is several zeros instead of "004B34E".

The computer with the first problem is a windows XP familly edition as for the other one I went on this after noon it's a vista where I had absolutely no problem whatsoever.

Please help me quickly because this is so aggravating since i love that game so much.

I forgot to say that the first error I don't even see the boxes to enter password and email, as for the second one it's once I press on "ok" to log in that it crashes

okay... so we have this straight.
- you installed on computer a.
- it works on computer a
- you then copied program files\planeshift to the usb key
- you put the key in computer b
- then either ran it straight form the key or copied to program files on computer b
- it crashes on computer b.

right?

or does it now crash on both?

No.
Installed on computer A
worked on computer A
Windows of computer A updated
Crashed on computer A
Copied planeshift folder to USB key
used from Key on computer B
worked on computer B
but barely any access to computer B

try uninstalling and reinstalling planeshift from scratch on computer A? Perhaps the Windows update buggered something with the original install?

I have already tried that and it failed. I have taken pictures of what happens when it crashes, I just don't know how to put it on the forum. Plus it crashes in two different ways from the key and from the pc they crash with 2 different errors. if you tell me how to put the pictures on here I could put them on, maybe it'd help.

I know uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't work. not even after 7 times.

You can upload the pictures here (http://imageshack.us/) and paste the links to the thumbnails in these forums afterwards.

It might be useful to know more about your hardware. Especially graphic drivers are quite essential and a source of issues.

- CPU model (manufacturer, cores, speed)
- RAM amount
- GPU model
- Graphic Driver version number

An operating system update is not very likely the cause of issues. A graphic driver update instead a lot more.

It might be worth to delete the configuration files of PlaneShift. Try to rename the folder "%AddData%\PlaneShift" to something else. This way PlaneShift will create a new default configuration and you still keep your log files in the renamed folder. If it works you can try to copy your old shortcuts and some other config files from the renamed directory to the new created one.

^ "%APPDATA%\PlaneShift" -- inside a hidden folder, usually "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application data".

Doesn't matter that it is hidden if you enter "%AddData%" in the address-bar of the windows explorer.

Aiwendil, look closely ... the variable is %APPDATA% ("Application data" - not "Additional data").

Okay, yesterday I had an epiphany (as I so often do). But before I tell you what the epiphany is I believe it's history is necessary.

I have tried playing the game from it's original folder and also from my USB key, it failed both ways BUT the error wasn'T the same, so I thought "what if I change the entire place of the folder?" I tried and it seems to be working perfectly. Now why the heck didn't it work in the spot it worked in at first??

(thanks for all your help everyone really appreciated)
