Hello everyone!
We want to know if you prefer to move your character by clicking on a target location on the ground or if you want to move through the keyboard (usually the wads keys).
Assumptions:
- the mouse move will work well, without bugs
- there always be the option to choose one or the other in the options menu.
This question is meant to define which is the default method used in a freshly installed PS client. This will be the main method used by new unexperienced players.
-
I generally use autorun and steer with the left-right arrow keys. I always disable mouse move.
-
Keyboard movement, disabled mouse movement. No question :)
-
Just the same :)
Sen
-
same here too.
-
ug mouse movement is awful, makes me run off cliffs when i move objects in my inventory :@#\
-
The mouse movement....ehk.
I'm always running into stuff when I'm trying to click on people(to get description and what not) -_-
And usually many games just use the WASD or arrow keys. I'm more used to them anyways
-
When doing combat you just can't move around using a mouse. I do use MouseLook quite a lot though.
But I think it could depend on the situation. I never liked mouse movement in Google Lively.
-
I could imagine that the "mouse look" (press Tab to try it) might be useful for some being used to First Person Shooters, and for people with experience in battles.
But I feel the "mouse move" (walk to the click point) is more risky than useful. I set it to a very unusual shift/mouse combo to test it, and never used it regularly.
-
Mouse Move could probably be useful if you were playing a real-time strategy or commanding your pets or something.
-
Mouse move is horrible.
-
I think changing of keyboard shortcuts should be forbidden ingame, and movement should be solely done with the mouse.
Planeshift is not a democracy, you don't have to listen to these scumbags.
-
well seems like mouse move is quite unpopular but perhaps assumption one is unclear. If it worked well without bugs I probably still wouldn't use it as there are only so many buttons on a mouse and it seems there are more useful things for them to do. I am basically lazy and that is why I set autorun -- I do not have to hold down the forward button and steering works quite well with just the left and right buttons. It isn't quite as useful in fights or tight spaces but mouse move isn't either.
If the mouse move had a route planning functionality such that a distant click would steer you around intervening obstacles, cross bridges and such, it would be better but as it stands now you just get hung up on them and march in place. It would be nice if you could click on the top of the BD fortress from the entrance pass and actually get there but there is a good chance you would just end up in the ravine on your way to the DR.
That actually makes me think it would be great if players could create and save paths that they commonly use and then call them up with a shortcut button. Thus if I was in the plaza I could trigger the path to the upper gate if I wanted to go to the magic shop and it would take me to the map boundary by the T-junction. Pie in the eye thinking I'm sure.

mouse movement is freakishly unnatural. it's worse than runescape... i think that has mouse movement? idk for sure, but ps has the lamest mouse movement ever. even if it wasn't so bad, it doesn't fit a game like this. it's just too weird and cumbersome for a 3d mmorpg.

Keyboard - hands down.
keep in mind some of us may have touchpads instead of mice.
-
a touchpad? what's that?

Considering the current implementation, most players agree that the keyboard is clearly preferable to mouse movement. However ...
Assumptions:
- the mouse move will work well, without bugs
... we have to consider what bugs there are. Taking a first glance at the bug tracker gives two tasks directly related.
bug: selection (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/flyspray/index.php?project=2&do=details&task_id=1143)
bug: portal (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/flyspray/index.php?project=2&do=details&task_id=1006)
It seems common sense from the replies here that characters jumping down cliffs like lemmings are a problem. As I did not find such a feature request, I just opened one. Shame on me if it is another duplicate.

I agree this would make life easier, however, I see some problems with this request. It might encourage people to have their characters act automatically while being AFK, an undesirable effect we already find with many players gaining ranks in weapon handling.

I prefer more direct interaction with the client and and more precise control.
-
Given the question of click on ground or use keyboard, I generally use <^v> (arrow keys) for movement, binding < and > to strafe, and using the mouse to steer. I bind mousemove to the backspace key because it is useful for those long boring trips on the road maps, and it is hard to hit it accidentally and go running off a cliff.
-
Touchpad and keyboard movement :whistling:
Never liked the mouse movement and I tend to click on the ground too much anyway (to clear target for example).
-
Sometimes it is even necessary to mouse-click into the 3D view just to make some GUI window lose the focus.
Keyboard-only navigation in the GUI is impossible, this already starts with the login screen.
Furthermore, I swapped the shift keys (Ctrl for crouching - a "more controlled movement" / Shift for running - "shifting the gear up"), so the right shift keys together with the cursor cross are my preferred movement -- as long as the "mouse look" is hard to set up to a decent sensitivity for me. And I am not very used to combat anyway.
-
I prefer the keys... sometimes I use the mouse to move around, but that's once in a blue moon really.
-
I play PS using mostly the keyboard anyhow, I only use the mouse to interact with some GUI elements (chat tabs, mostly)
