I'm new to this game and just wanted to create a character.
Since this is a roleplaying game - a roleplay roleplaying game - I shall not create any characters with names I got from another game. (I won't say which, only that there's a Horde and an Alliance). For example, I don't name any characters zeemeerman2, like this username.
I have also other characters on the "other" game, one named Mauradia (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Khadgar&n=Mauradia). Mauradia is - in this game - an in my opionion aquatic elf, more known as a Nolthrir. (I like Aquatic Elf more)
Anyway, Mauradia is linked to Maridia, an underwater level in Super Metroid on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (aka SNES). I spelled it wrong, but kept the name since I liked it.
After all this, I'm going to click okay to use this name. Just say if it's too obvious to use this name, and I will change it (or delete it and make a new one).
I hope to find this a nice game and community.

god it sounds like you came from a rly fascist game. there's nothing wrong with saying world of warcraft. :P you can use just about any name you want as long as it isnt ridiculous or obviously ripped. i got mine from an ipod game. :-[
but i did hear one character on ps, named feedro, was forced by a gm to change his name. gm said it had the italian spelling for some poet, which doesn't make sense considering an italian might be unable to pronounce that afaik.

Personally, I don't get it when the GMs do arbitrary name changes like that. I could understand maybe if he was RPing a poet ingame your claim might have merit, but he wasn't. He was just sucking at playing a kid, and simply ended up being a godmodding asshole reminding me far more of Mr. Game and Watch than any sort of interesting character.
As it stands, you can find something that any ingame name correlates to IRL. Sarras is a mystical island to which the Holy Grail is brought in the Arthurian legend. Better go change it.

i don't see why ps is complaining when it has diabolis and enkidukais. really? diaboli means devil's and is used in the phrase "advocatus diaboli" meaning devil's advocate. enkidukai sounds a lot like enkidu, a half-man half-beast from the epic gilgamesh. (i should say the gms are complaining, not ps, sry)

depends on your culture and your pronunciaction :)
if you pronunce even with english pronunciation feedro in front of an italian, taken from granted he isn't an ignorant, he will recognise fedro

I read somewhere (can not find it again, but expect it is in Mu's game design site somewhere, but maybe not...) that in any game world, the larger it becomes, the likelyhood there will be a placename = "crossroads" will approach 100%.
Point is, only so many letter combinations, even fewer if you want to make it pronouncable.
Re: Fedro. Clicked on link, and it came up in another language, Italian maybe? Click English, and it changed to Phaedrus, seached for "fedro" and while there were pages with that name mentioned in it, bit ot told me: "You may create the page "Fedro", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered. " Maybe Talad or some other "god" liked it, and assumed it was a RL name being used ingame? In a game I was in breifly (closed beta), the very first npc was named "babama" would that be considered too close to "BArack oBAMA"?

Personally, I think that unless you are acting the namesake, it should not be an issue, with few exceptions. We would not want to encourage people naming their toons after religious figures, and such getting Jihads decreed against PS, but besides that, I think it should be fine. Note, I am not a DEV or a GM, so my opinion is like a janet jackson song, it "doesn't really matter" ( Belaboring the points, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4SOnBDe7qs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4SOnBDe7qs) note the name has been used for other songs as well.)
Back to original post... Welcome, and just do your best. Most players and GMs will be understanding. The fact you are trying should count for points, to most...

Or you could just say that it's German for "space" (as in "the final frontier"; wow it took a long time to find out that this is the original English phrase for "unendliche Weiten".)

So are you claiming that all names that are similar to any names that can be found in any RL source should be banned? Because that is A counter argument...

btw, I could find a RL reference to just about all names ingame, either intentional, or accidental. Even Bamko, when I searched the domain, turns out to be a oil exploration company in texas. That was years after I made the name, but still, point stands.
Of course you will find some way to disagree with that as well, and still not add to the disccuion. Here is a hint, it is nice to take a position (mine is names should be quite liberally allowed, with few exeptions) and then argue YOUR position, not simply troll and snipe.
But hey, whatever you like, serves me right for once again trying to become a part of this community... [back to /ignore PS forums ]

Bamko, Akkaido's point was that since weltall doesn't use that name to RP with on the RP server, you saying that name shouldn't be allowed on the RP server because it has an OOC meaning is a moot point.

Perhaps you should find a better name to pick holes in, one that's actually used for RP, yes?
