hi everyone!
I know that the PlaneShift authors are proud of the game NPC\'s but...have you ever tried to talk to some more advanced bots? Just some examples:

I hope they\'ll imrove NPC\'s AI into sth like that \'cause currently it doesn\'t look very well. How stupid is when a bartender asks what do I want and doesnt understand if I reply \"beer\"?
Anyway, the idea of this game is great and I\'m looking forward for any future releases :)

Well the underlying system is good, but we need to flesh out their knowledge more.

It would be great if we had AI like him in the game (on the other hand I can imagine how difficult it must be to develop such AI)

I disagree with you, macellarius. I would rather just say simple phrases to one of the PS AI and have them answer those phrases meaningfully than talk for hours with some AI that just generates random arbitrary babble that could fit with anything you just said.

Ok, I dont say they should be able to chat on any unimportant subject but if a dwarf really wants me to do sth for him its simple he would anwser to any of \"what do you want me to do\", \"how can I help you\" or \"what\'s the task\" - not only a specific key word created by authors. Otherwise the talking is a frustrating activity of typing random sentences, hoping for luck with any of them.

is there a logging device for NPCs?
this way you could make a list of standard questions pretty quick, I think

Just a little bit of random thinking...don\'t take the following too seriously :)
Honestly, for static / quest NPCs I don\'t think you need very sophisticated AI...a static conversation tree with some magic in the middle to make \"close enough\" replies count as a trigger will work very well...just as long as it\'s not like EverQuest where sometimes you have to sit next to an NPC saying semi-random phrases for hours until you hit the right trigger (or until someone figures it out and puts out a spoiler.) This shouldn\'t be too hard, but give the game some time...remember, it\'s a pre-alpha :)
For hack and slash mobs, a good AI can make the game a lot more insteresting...specially if the ones that escape can learn and fight differently next time around. Of course, this can take some pretty massive processing power on the server side. It could, perhaps, be added as an optional server-side plugin...or used only when a certain NPC flag is set (so tough / boss mobs would have it, and their flunkies would not.)

Matusz, yes it logs all misunderstood questions from players. Then we can go through them and fix the obvious ones people are trying a lot. You can expect the NPCs to get better and better at understanding the players.
