I have just tried logging onto the game and it says that I'm not running the right version and I must update planeshift. Though when I run the updater it says firstly that there are no mirrors active and that I should check the forums for more info and help which I don't find. And second it says that there are no updates needed. May somebody help me on this please?

The server is in the process of being upgraded to the new version, 0.5, once this is done you will need the new 0.5 client make remember to make sure its up to date and log in.

Im having problems downloading the new client version of Planeshift 5.0, it says you need a torrent to download it, but im afraid to use bitorrent, cause its gotten us in trouble for some reason, and almost fined for using it. Any suggestions on this?

Using bit torrent to download PS is 100% legal. But if you don’t want to do that you will have to wait until some direct downloads are available.

A--How long will it take for the direct downloads to become available
B--What if it still does not want to download?
C--How do i get bitorrent back onto my computer if i need it?

Using bittorent is only 80% legal.

The only thing i ever downloaded/"torrented" using bitorrent was planeshift, and then we got in trouble for it and i deleted it off my computer.

I have had all of the above experiences.
I have downloaded the bit torrent and downloaded the new version and I still cant get it to open. I am using a mac

Im having client issues myself im using vista 64 on this machine so im not surprised if it wont work for me
any advice for me?

As far as my version (vista ) goes , you need to select 'elves' for your theme options - its not selected unless you see the no preview screen
(or you might see the preview i dont know)

Is anyone else finding their charachter has not been carried over?
Also, I ended up in the tutorial (version 0.5), and the NPCs don't respond to 'give me a quest'.
Is anyone having the same issue?

They don't respond if you type into the NPC tab of the chat window anymore. Now you have to right click on them and then click on the talk button to bring up a window with predetermined responses to choose from.

First download 0.5-rc2 through the torrents.
Make a backup of your old configuration files (best just rename the directory) and allow the new client to start with a fresh configuration.
The configuration files are in the "~/.PlaneShift" directory on linux, "%AppData%\PlaneShift" on windows and "~/Library/Application Support/PlaneShift" for a Mac. Just rename that folder to something else before starting the new client.
Then execute "pslaunch" with the "--repair" options. For linux just open a shell (konsole/terminal) and go to the directory you installed PS in with "cd <directory of PS install>". There just type "./pslaunch --repair".
For windows open "cmd" (command prompt) with the "run" command from the menu or hit <windows>+<r> and type "cmd". Then you have a command prompt. Go to the PS install directory with "cd <directory of PS install>" (for example "cd C:\Games\PlaneShift") and type "pslaunch --repair". With the shell/command prompt you can see the progress of the updater...it really takes ages, about 2 hours for me.
After updating start pslaunch, do some settings (for example I needed to change the sound renderer to software again to get decent sound). Then you can try to start the game.
If you get in the game, logout again and copy the content of you "logs" directory of the backuped old configuration to the new one to get your old chat logs, the "options/shortcutcommands.xml" file, the "options/controls.xml" file and if you changed the chat filter the "options/chat.xml" file to the new configuration. This should give you all shortcuts, keyboard settings and a changed chat filter back.
Edit: Sorry about Mac users...it works about the same, but I have no idea how to open a shell/console on a Mac.

That depends on what version you already have. If you have 0.4.03 (lately only working on the laanx server), you need to download a new install. Either use the direct links bovek provided (see above), or download the previous release candidate from the link ON THE NEWS PAGE, and update from there.
If you already had the release candidate (working only on ezpcusa), you should be able to just update.

each time i try to download the one on the news page i get a 404 error!!!

When I go to login, it says i need to update. Then when I go to update, it wont open!!!!
I have gone on the PS website and downloaded the update file, but it still wont work...???
Please help me out!!!
