Having heard rumors during my time being, but I prefer to gather insight first-hand:
If I lead a guild, can I join the team as a GM while still remaining leader of that guild?
Are there any restrictions regarding my current ingame-being?

and you need to be able to get on irc to be on the team :)

Xillix is always looking for some fresh meet, you can't build an empire without a lot of bodies.
I believe that has been the custom in the past however.

In answer to your original question while it is not forbidden to be a guild leader and GM it is not recommended as it does leave you very vulnerable to accusations of favouritism

Personally I don't like it at all when a gm is a guild leader also. It splits your attention and your loyalties are mixed. I despise even the APPEARANCE of favoritism.
When I joined the team I gave up my guild.
In the end it's about what's best for the game and how best you can serve your guild mates.
