do you guys believe that the release of V 0.5 is
a stop towards coming to V 1.0 ??
-
not really if the number is right we are half way there
XD
-
yeah if you look to the number 0.5 is closer to 1.0 compared with 0.4*.
But if you look in game and not on the numbers?
P.S. can't spell number without numb

Any release is a step forward. Why make a release that moves backwards?

i think the engine is a vast step over the old one. it just needs to be refined and the kinks worked out. then it will be even more stable than the .4 engine was.
the upgrade to .5 went smoother than .3 to .4 did, and that was even better than the .2 to .3 upgrade. and in all of these people made complaints about how the old system was better and that the game was going in reverse and that in 6 months it would be a dead project.
same nay says, different face. see you all in .6, Neko Diamond.

well. I am not familiar with the technical things but what I see is that
in summer this year was a bigger number of players on.
Then the wipe discussion came and the average number of online players dropped
of about 20 players.
Now we have the new realese and nobody talking about wipe anymore.
But the number of online players is reduced again by 30.
At least during my playing times.

Half way, it depends of what.
Art is very far from being completed, specially the world. Character models miss Xacha, F.Ylian, Diaboli, M.Nolthir, Stonebreakers and Lemur. We've got only Gugrontid, Hydlaa, about 20% of Ojaveda, the Eagle BD without the BD and soon Amdeneir.
But it's been a nice step forward. Graphics are much better than in 0.4; The 0.4 graphics look dated compared to 0.5, I believe it's the change of the engine.
-
Vast reduction in player numbers came from upping the minimum requirements to play. Any doubt about our sustainability are not credible, we're kicking ass and the new changes will vastly improve not only the look but the game play.
Though it is not now apparent because we're using the same unbalanced spells of the past the magic system is completely redone and more extensive.
Though it is not now apparent because we're largely using the same art as in the past we're able to do much nicer looking models in the future.
Though it is not now apparent due to player numbers, the team size is growing.
Though it is not now apparent our rules department is now focused on improving game play issues.
We'll get more players over the term of this release, player numbers are not a leading indicator of the success or failure of the project. The people we now have playing the game are of a much higher caliber as testers and they are doing a lot more to help the team. I'll take one communicative tester who interacts efficiently with the methods we've provided them to give accurate feedback over 10 whiners who are full of doom and gloom any day.

To add,
I would not judge game completion by how much of the world is available to explore. I would base it solely on engine related things. Meaning, skills, stats, spells, etc. 1.0 will be when all of those things are finished and balanced.
If you include areas of the world, we'd still be at .1 or less. And that's simply not general practice on how things are done anyways. Take WoW as example. IF you wanted to base it on world content, seeming how they still don't have many areas of the game explorable yet that are all described from the extensive lore to the game, you'd still try to say that they should still be in beta, even after 5 years of open play, and 11 mil+ active subscribers.
even in a huge for profit company like Blizzard and WoW, the art is always the last thing and lags far beyond the engine. it's simply that time consuming. Sure, when WoW releases a new expansion, they throw in new engine related things, like new talents, skills, professions and what not, but the major content added is always expansion of the game world.
The way I personally view things, 1.0 is getting all the ground work done. from there, it's all about adding new areas. So say 2.0 is all of the first level is complete and open for play ( or maybe that will happen by 1.0) 3.0 adds in another level of the world to explore, and etc. form there.
regardless, the speed of releases, the quality, the content, all depends on the community. The more people participate and help build the world, the faster it is built. Going off of that statement, the amount of players getting involved and contributing to the project rather than simply playing the game and moving on when it gets stale for them has increased significantly. As Xil stated, it may not seem like it at the moment, but it will make itself shown soon enough. Simply a matter of time.

i dont get it
-
same nay says, different face. see you all in .6, Neko Diamond.
-
Number of players may not be an indication of the success or failure of a game at this stage, but number of players certainly does make a difference to how fun it is to play.
-
i get it now heh
aldo, lack of players is probably due to holidays or tech problems. me being blind/hospitalised/noy knowing how to download correctly keeps me from playing atm. i still like planeshift im just noy online atm. busy time of year

A random question: Is every step towards 1.0 going to increase it's system requirements? My computer can barely handle 0.5 as it is.
-
it probably will, but that's 5 to 10 years off...
-
im patient enough to wait that long...weird
-
PS Version 1.0 will play just fine on the Quantum Neural Net computers that everyone will have when it comes around. ;)
-
@ Xillix and all:
The minimum requirements can be lower again, after fixing certain bugs in the shader fallback logic and the stability.
The CrystalSpace engine is able to be more downward compatible. If we just had more developers who understand the science of shader programming.

Yah, could do with another two people who are apt in graphics programming.
-
That is strange what you said Xillix my PC would easily pass minimum requirements for 0.5. That is why im still puzzled about why i cant play. And its not just mine that cant my parents laptop cant and its specs are pritty average for a normal laptop. I guess its just my touch :(
-
Try to get on irc and go through step by step to get it running
I am sure there is some error in your process.
-
You should not miss to explicitly set up all options before starting to play.
For example, if you already tried the beta test version, you may not have set the "elves" skin, and in this case the client simply quits, without any obvious warning. The solution was as simple as: Select the "elves" skin.
-
I'll go on IRC in a few days im about to go away. Its not the elves skin. Everything works but all i get is all tabs, and my torso, but the rest of the screen is black, sometimes i can see outlines of hills and see trees and npcs thats about it.

Vakachehk: It won't work on the parent's laptop because the CPU seems to be in failure mode, leading to extensive freeze crashing. PS itself probably won't work as it's an ATI GPU (I think)...
Won't work on the other PC because the motherboard on that one is ancient, and while the GPU has nice stats, it's just not compatible with updates. That said, PS opens, and maybe after a while whatever bug/issue causes the blackening of everything might be fixed.
It's a new release, and new releases -always- have new issues and bugs. Look at Vista.... it was terrible. As it is now, as Windows 7 (Vista2) it's much better, after years of work.... and that's on a non-volunteer team.
