I wish all a happy new year! Early still for me to say this where I am (waiting 4 hours still) but I probably won't be able to come on at midnight :P

Dral raises a glass with sparkling cider and nods. "And to Planeshift, may it be a successful game in the next year to come." :)

~Cheers,

The decade isn't over until new years day 2011.  You still have another year to make it better.

decades are 10 years long, neko. 1980-'89, '90-'99, 2000-2009, 2010-2019.

the first decade of 2000 did suck pretty bad

Neko is right. We still have until 2010 for the decade to be over.
EDIT: I mean 2011

it is 2010. neko said 2011
Title: Re: Happy New Year!
Post by: neko kyouran on January 02, 2010, 03:19:45 pm
No, decades start on a 0 and end on a 9 :P

There was no year 0, the calender was created at the start of year 1.  There fore the first decade, being a ten year interval lasted from year 1 through year 10, making the first day of year 11, the start of the second decade.

Carry that forward in time to present day, the end of the decade is December 31, 2010 23:59:99.999

neko, you can be all technical with how you view the years, but you're still wrong. a thing is defined by how most people see it, not by obsolete definitions no one knows about.

whoever skipped year 0 was a party pooper

everyone where i live defines it as 2011.  therefore, by your logic, you must be wrong.  :P

The mass media defines it as 2010, thus as with all things, if it's reported on TV it must be true! :P

neko, first of all, that's wikipedia. second, some of the facts you're stating may be true, but that does not mean the decade ends at the start of 2011. that's elliptical logic. your argument is invalid.

If your using the calendar everyone else in the modern world uses neko is right on the ball.

Your argument is invalid.

make sense now?

make sense now?

yep, the world is full of uneducated sheep that listen to what everything they hear the media tells them and never actually sit down to question whether, just maybe, that the media is wrong.

once you can find proof that the calender system the majority of the world uses has a year 0 in it, then you will be able to say that the first decade went from 0-9, and the second started on year 10. until such time, the next decade, century, millennia, etc, all fall on a 1, and run through a 10, beginning anew on the next year ending in a 1.

and since you liked downplay wikipedia as being a credible source.

Neko is right. In the gregorian calendar, year 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1) immediately followed year -1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_BC).
Title: Re: Happy New Year!
Post by: Xordan on January 04, 2010, 02:15:59 am
Apparently then, if most of the western world is considering a decade to be 0-9, we're no longer using the vanilla gregorian calendar.

Someone explain why the 20th century was 1900-1999 then.

Neko's wrong imo. 1st =/= One.

19th century = 18XX

21st century = 20XX

Hate to say it, sarras may be right.

I'm open to further opinion.

Best Wishes for 2010 everyone!
Cherppow: So you could come back sometime? You made the dreaded Death Realm but that doesn't mean we don't like you anymore  :'(

0 to 9 counting makes more sense, I guess along the way some of the calendar definitions were changed to be more logical. Of course there will always be purists who will claim this is not the way the Pope would have wanted it :P

Well, I think I've done my duty as the thread has now hit page three. Soooooooooooo...........

Actually, both are correct, as it all depending on which counting method your country and the people around you have adopted to use.

Some countries prefer the ordinal method of counting the Gregorian calender, whereas others use a cardinal based counting method.
ordinal: centuries, decades, etc all start on 1 and end in 10.
cardinal, all start on a nice even easy to use 0, and end on a 9, as the fact that there was no year 0 is ignored and the entirety of all dates BC are consider as year 0. this method is also widely adopted as the defacto standard for ISO 8601, which is used in official time keeping for that nifty little clock down there on your OS.

I just like making an other wise very short with little room for topic expansion thread play out a little longer to see if we can get a good discussion going.   :detective:

So, what are your hopes for this year (or decade, you choose)?

I hope the haitians will live a better year than the last, and I hope the politicians get their priorities straight for the next decade (Something I highly doubt will happen).

I hope that Diablo 3 will be as good as I am expecting it to be.  I've already been let down with Starcraft 2's release.

But, at least Civ 5 was amazing.  Definitely the best one of the series thus far.
