Title: Freezing, Crashing...[resolved]

Hi!

First of all I apologize if this problem was answered elsewhere..i read all the current mac posts and tried various fixes but nothing seems to be working.

Initially (without changing anything) my client would only load sporatically..sometimes it would open..sometimes it wouldnt. When it DID open, I COULD manage to get ingame but it was so incredibly slow I could only move my character 1 step every 5 minutes or so.

After talking to a few people they suggested that I delete the shadercache file so I did and now it opens and gets to the character selection screen fine...but crashes after loading (tried all characters with the same result). I am terrible with computers and really have no idea what to do...could one of you smart people please help? :)

P.S. I tried changing the graphics settings but it doesn't want to save them. Every time i change them and hit "ok", it just reverts to the highest settings..I should also mention i tried adding ThreadManager.AlwaysRunNow = true to the psclient.cfg and that didn't work either o.O

Hey think I have the same Macversion as you have. Please try to turn off in settings VBO and shaddows and of course turn the sound off, and if the rest goes costum it should be fine. For me it was the same, changed settings and they turned back like they wanted. So most important thing is to turn off VBO. Try this. I am having troubles also again, since two days. But before it worked well again.

I have noticed that I get a client freezing problem with I have open office open. If I shut down Open office then the freezing problem goes away. I wonder if there are other programs that people run at the same time as PS that might also cause a freezing problem.

Large applications like office suites and web browsers will consume lots of memory while they are open. This can cause performance issues as it creates a temporary shortage of memory (ram). Its conceivable that if there is enough of a shortage an application may slow down, stall or crash. I don't know how gracefully the PlaneShift client deals with such shortages.

For me, I only have 1 gig of ram to work with so I try to keep as few apps open at a time when playing.

Web browsers will typically consume space in ram for each page you have open  - so if you have a tabbed browser with 4 or 5 pages loaded.. then all those images on the pages, ads, flash, music etc.. will be sitting around in ram.  Operating systems can temporarily save large portions of ram to disk in order to free up space ( and then swap it back into ram as needed ) but this is very slow. Disks are in the order of about 1,000 times slower than ram.

@Sulaika: Ill try to turn VBO off but it still won't save my settings when i change them :/


will try these things and then edit with an update in a bit..I appreciate all the help :)

[edit] Ok so I tried both those things...and i even closed every program EXCEPT planeshift just incase it was something else affecting it. When i turned off VBO and lowered all the settings and clicked OK, they all just reset again--so i couldn't turn it off :( In the end it still crashed...Khaki i'm not sure if this was the other crash report you wanted but heres the report that was saved to psclient_static.crash.log

Thanks, the last report you posted was very useful, however we'd still like more information. Please download the debug client from http://planeshift.ezpcusa.com/psclient_debug.zip put it in the same place as psclient, run it till it crashes and post again the crash report as in your last report.

Hmm that didn't seem to give any more information. We're preparing a new build of the client to be released this weekend through the updater that should help us work out this issue. Keep us posted on how it works out. :)

Awesome...thanks anyways for everything, i will update with any changes.  :D

[edit] looks like i got it working. I was hesitant to reinstall because it took me a full day to install PS last time but i decided to bite the bullet and reinstall anyways just in case it would fix something. Go figure it worked and now my client runs mostly fine (an occasional crash here and there but I can actually get in game now). Thank you Khaki and everyone else for all your help!
