ok well i saw the info thread firt the must read one, it says not to posts just lists of thing of what you want but isnt that why this is called 'the wish list'?
anyways my wish is that GM's would make PS funner, better, more like an rping game, more events, exciting new and stuff, it is very boring, only a few friends talk to me and all the others are out doing training, well when a GM event is on they will al be in a big group because its a GM! but if it is a player made RP there will not be much people, also i wish that you would make training magic easier - wither by lowering the price or just simply easier lvl up, if it is both ways it is almost impossible to train it and thus discourage noobies to go and play, or to have an objective in the game, If there are no Events made by Gm's and it is super hard to train, what is the point odf playing PS? just to stand there? i have experienced some rping, it was fun but not many people will join, i tried to get a lot of poeople to join even just the non rpers or the people i dont know, but only some went with me and some are just sooo whats the word? snoby or somthing? that they wont even talk to me, i try to make a nice RP or a big event not by GMs but by normal people but the others will think it is a bad RP because there are no advantages, except when it has money involved then maybe, but money is also hard to come by these days, it is not fun to just stay there in one place and dig your life out [i know some people who even use 2 accounts 1 to dig one to play]and thus no money for other people to join the RP where as a GM has all the money in all yliakum......anyways i rest it here i gt get back to my magic train :P
-
oops forgot to add -- i also want normal clothes -- which you can buy and design and this and that your own, not just armor
-
I think more GM events would be fun, that is a valid wish.

Just get some artists to make them.

i actually think it would be more fun if gms quit rping, or at least if there were player-gms that only dealt with rp, and the real gms can stick to their "jobs". rule enforcement should be separate from rp.
too much control on rp imo. i get bored with the rp aspect often because there's just not enough opportunity to do anything that's rly fun. i know there's those long player event stuff in the ig roleplay board, but that's small scale. it's not fulfilling enough (for me at least). i think ps should consider letting players have more control in the ps world, like in government, the guard, and all those things

Maisent made an excellent point !
Training gets boring after a while and training alone without an adventure to embark on , or a purpose is well .. boring and pointless.
Now for the answer to the multimillion dollar question... How to make it more fun...
As players, the answer is sitting right in our laps. Its up to us as players to create the rp environment. The community that RP occurs in.
This is something that Game Masters CANNOT do. Why ? Because there are only so many of them. They cannot create the community. That is something that we, the citizens of Hydlaa need to do ourselves. Also, Game Masters are OOC entities which means they are not part of the RP environment.
We need to play the game is if our characters actually live there and experience the virtual world from that perspective. We need to make characters that are unique and think about how they interact with the world at large and with other characters and guilds.
We need make groups, form alliances with other groups, take risks, be vulnerable, allow others to get the best of us at times. We need to ACT as if we are part of this world and no nothing about our lives on earth.
Guilds are good when they dont specialize in *everything*. When guilds and players stop relying/depending on other guilds and players isolation occurs. Currently what I see in game is a lot of isolated guilds and players. And lately with the decrease in player count I see almost as many guilds as players.

I agree

I'll just point out that most of the GMs still run regular player characters as long as being GMs. This means we already have player-GMs as was mentioned above. The more GMs we have the more events we can do and the more things we can do such as guard duty or other more RP related things. I don't think we want to give players to the GM commands needed to be guards without some level or training and that would basically involve those players becoming GMs. Maybe we need a lower level of GM with more limited access to commands so they can do things like guard duty. The bottom line is if you want to see GMs do more then we need more GMs. If you are only going to sit around and say that GMs need to do more then I can pretty much assure you it will not happen. If you are willing to become a GM and help help make things happen then they will.
Also don't sell player organized events short. I have seen player organized events that have drawn as well if not better than any GM run event. Most dueling tournaments outdraw the typical GM event, the Spring Festival organized by the Call of Destiny guild last year drew a nice number of people. The market days that use to be organized uses to draw a good number of people and gave the opportunity for good RP. PLayers can organize events that will draw people and give plenty of RP opportunities. Of course the key item here is someone, or a group of people have to put in the work to actually organize something. Giving back to the community is key. Don't just sit back and expect others to entertain you all the time. If more people would be willing to give a little effort in terms of helping to organize and run some kind of event then everyone will have more to do in game.
-
I didn't mean to say that GM's cannot help to create roleplay opportunities ( Thats kind of how it came it I guess .. sorry .. ) - clearly they have been running rp events for a long time now.. My point is that as players we need to take up the reigns and role play instead of expecting these things to be done for us.
And by role play I don't mean talking all fancy the way strong text players do .. I just mean acting as if the game is real. And talking in main as if you really do exist in this world. ( Simply pretending .. its easy .. children do it all the time )
A few players can get together and start a one-off event. But if that event does not tie with our character's lives and does not affect them then the rp it creates will end as soon as the event does ( or shortly after ). When players live a life in-game and a meaningful event occurs It can be quite different.
Let me share an example:
There was one time when cy character and another character robbed someone in the howling well. This character was well known and liked by many players. Our characters were well known too. Afterwards the character that played the victim discussed the incident with other characters ICly and news spread though she did not know who we were (ICly) because we were disguised. There was a lot of rp going on as a result of this. Eventually my character got caught while trying to cover it up and got butchered by an angry boyfriend. As the rp progressed there was even more discussion ICly, my character lost his in-game job, the other bad guy resigned from his in game job. etc.. This line of rp and other rp's that resulted from it went on for months. It also created a good amount of conflict naturally. After this event my character could not just hang around in the tavern or other very visible places. He also wanted to get revenge.
Its clear in this example that if it was not for the casual rp that we had all done in the past the event in question would have had little effect on us. Also if the event was not meaningful to us then it would have been quickly forgotten.
Going back to Maisent's statement about being a bit bored now that he is trained.. If we as players build several separate communities on top of the setting that has been provided and we make it so that those communities oppose one another then there might be some use for a trained fighter. An excellent way to do this would be to make communities that are molded around the in game religions. As long as the religions are immiscible there should be plenty of room for conflict. Especially if each religion teaches that the other religions are wrong.
If everyone is buddy buddy .. all world peace, granola chewing, tie dye wearing, accoustic guitar strumming hippies then there won't be much to do for those who are trained in warfare. ( though it would be great for those who prefer non-hostile rp )
Now getting to what Sarras said about giving players some more power... I have thought at times that it would be nice to be able to control or summon an npc for an event .. or to do something cool like transform someone as part of the event. There is an old saying that goes something like this: "You can put lipstick on a pig.. but you'll still have a pig" I'm not shooting Sarras's idea down but I don't think that special effects and extra powers will make the rp better unless it is already good. Likewise someone who does not rp a guard well will not be better at rping one if given special abilities. I do however like the idea of a player that can somehow be given some extra ability to help to facilitate RP.... The "How" part of this is tricky.
Just my two cents.
Edit: typos plus an afterthought ( last para )

Rigwyn is right on all points so far in this thread.
One of the key differences between today and the past is this: You used to have players like Proglin Proteus Underthemoon Phinehas Sangwa and many others.
Big role-plays were tolerated and welcomed.
I agree also that most guilds are meaningless today and all in peaceful accord.
I like guilds that ally themselves tightly to a side in the world. Religions, Law, Illegality.
Just because the Octarchy keeps the law strong inside Hydlaa doesn't mean there aren't other places a player or guild could claim and make significant.
It used to anger players that I camped out in the temple of Laanx and "made it my own" but at the same time, there WAS an in game priesthood of Laanx, and people came to xillix for religious instruction, quests, and conflict. Famously with the thieves of Yliakum, and evil priests of the blackflame.
I have seen quite some vitriol on external forums about the team not adequately supporting role-play, we complained about the same when I was a player, but we DID something about it, as players. When we did, the gms supported it in many cases.
Anyone who thinks role-play is something that you can codify with a 3-d game system isn't taking enough of a role in manifesting rp via their own action imo. It was done in the past, it can be done now.

sry sarva, i meant like... player-gms without powers, or like dungeon masters. they'd just be players, maybe granted a few gm powers, but they only focus on rp. i'm not rly sure what i was meaning in that post. i waz falling asleep xD
rigwyn, you forgot that yliakum doesn't accept religious intolerance! :P
maybe there's just not enough conflict. i can totally understand having an all-powerful static gov for now (in beta, probably too complicated to change the gov), but everything else is way too... peaceful? the religious/racial tolerance is ridiculous, it's not realistic, and the settings reason for it doesn't make sense (something like "yliakum is such a harsh world that everyone must band together to survive, so there's no time for intolerance"). guards are too powerful, even when they're inactive since rpers just shout for them and the perp gets auto-arrested. those wand things that pretty much allow guards to control space-time are lame as hell. it's overkill for criminals and rp. destroys any reason to be a good, lawful char too when you already have super guards to take care of baddies. and there are almost no good chars on ps.
only way i can think of for players to fix this is to just leave the cities. at least the baddie chars, and there they could set up guilds, camps, hideouts, etc. or players could set up territories, little kingdoms, or whatever and duke it out over land.
-
Yes the capital city of a powerful government is not the place to play out your rebel rp.
-
Sarras - Baddies shouldn't be in the cities, unless they are very smart and careful about what they are doing. Unfortunately I see to many baddies playing stupid and in ways that they would be easily caught by guards. An example is holding someone up when they are in sight of a guard. Sorry but that baddie deserves to be busted. If a baddie is operating in the city then they need to be holding up people out of sight of the guards or where guards would likely be ( like in the plaza area). Of course it will take some RP for the baddies to lure their victims to these secluded places out of sight from the guards. And to protect the ID of the baddie they may have to con an innocent into helping them, with consequences to the innocent if they are implicated in the crime. Also the baddies need to be willing to sometimes accept the consequences of their actions and should be willing to accept a few days in jail if they are caught. Even in jail there are opportunities for RP since there could be visitors coming to see the baddies in jail

This is the type of conflict we hope to embed ...

I have an idea; anyone who has been around for a year apply to be a Game Master; leading to more events. Check: http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=35716.0
More Game Masters is one of the best solutions for the lack of events problem that I see. I would say giving players certain powers would spawn jealousy, competition and of course, abuse. It can be regulated but the seperation between players and GM's is good as it is.

Can't Im' only going to be 16

I don't think we need more GMs to make more events. GMs make events tailored to the average everyday player. What XilliX and others in this thread have pointed out is that it can only go so far. If GMs started tailoring even one event to a certain faction of player, there would be complaints (trust me, there have been in the past) that they're being biased. If they don't tailor to different factions, they're too mary-sue for alot of players.
So I suggest that rather than complain, you do as XilliX said. MAKE events. Start your own story, make a rich, deep history and cater to certain styles of player. Be creative. Make a guild that isn't just a hollow name and an extra chat tab, make it a business, a priesthood, a militia, a band of thugs, or even hunters. If you're thinking of making your own guild but see another that has this specific purpose, join them! Support guilds where hard work has been put in to make it unique, purposeful, and authentic to PlaneShift. There are many guilds, alliances, roleplays that need more support to get off the ground.
Putting in some effort and researching your character's race, giving him a well-thought out description, choosing a career, and either joining or creating a specific, goal-orientated guild that is in character to Yliakum and the world of PlaneShift is what makes the game for me. Trying to figure out whether someone is deviously tricking my character or really in need of my help, deciding whether or not to follow that suspiscious menki down the alley, running small-scale Roleplays with characters I randomly meet on the street...
...these are things you could be doing rather than writing paragraphs as long as mine about how everyone else isn't doing enough.
-
I would strongly encourage anyone who can role play reasonably well and who has the interest to go ahead and take a stab at it.
If you need feedback or advice try PM-ing someone who has run an event that you liked.
After playing in a few events I had an idea of how to do it but was still unsure about it. I asked another player (Tadano Hitoshi) for advice after playing in a few of his events and was quite surprised at how willing he was to teach. This was enough for me to get started and to get enough confidence to try a few more.
Some things that are helpful:
1. Look up "Dramatic Structure" on Wikipedia. Learn to spot the introduction, conflict, rising action, climax and denouement in stories and movies. Try and include these elements in your event.
2. Look up "36 plots" on Google. You can get generic lists of plot ideas that can easily by applied to the game's settings.
3. Focus more on providing an opportunity for enjoyable rp than on giving out free stuff. The people that join for the rp alone will add more to your event than those who show up for trinkets.
4. Take it slow. Don't be in a rush to bring things to resolution. If your on a quest to retrieve a powerful glyph from an evil wizard who lives in Bronze Doors, then make a quest out of it. Bring some healers, mages and swordsmen with you. Take a day to hike half of the way, perhaps camp overnight at the explorer's outpost, then resume your journey the next day. Perhaps on the way back you may OOCly invite some Outlaws to attack your party, or arrange to have a religious guild purify and destroy the wicked glyph for you.. The slower you take it the more opportunities you may find to include other players.
Just food for thought.

In my honest opinion, epic quests for rare items controlled by evil geniuses are overdone.
I suggest something as simple as a farmer wanting to expand a farm over land owned by a rival farmer, basic stuff, everyday life. Less epic, but make a plot require more socialising, where the reward is as simple as a carrot, and the experience.
-
I've noticed that a lot of small-scale RPs gradually build up into small events. Who knows? Maybe the guy you're about to speak to is a young fool who wants fame and fortune and other stuff like that. You can attempt to guide him on his quest, or you can talk him out of it altogether. The key word here is 'Choice'. Anything can happen. The only limits are the settings of PS and your own imagination.
-Edit: Added a bit of extra stuff
-
You can get the most epic and enthralling RPs just by organising a simple meeting.
-
Like that Alliance meeting.. It could easily have turned into into a brawl, given a push in the right direction. That meeting could have ended in so many different ways. But, (un)fortunately, the result was peaceful

I don't like the walking animations for some of the races like the female dermorians and dwarves. What about the diaboli, hammerweilders, lemurs, etc.
