I've been out on the boat five or six times and only caught one blue cod. Everyone else on the boat caught a fair amount of fish. My manhood is diminished, and I feel a little depressed.
Give me some quick tips to catch a fish please!
Other than my lack of fishing expertise, the holiday has been lovely, hung out with dolphins, sunbathed, rainbathed (moreso than sunbathed), kayak-surfing, boogy boarding, and even scratched up on some rocks (darn invisible currents). See you all soon

Lol! Well, make sure you use the right bait...and fish in the right areas. Make sure the hook can't be seen...use the right type of hook (i.e. small hooks for small fish)
Sounds like you had a nice holiday :)

Pipis are much easier to get.
Go out to knee depth in the water, and do a little pipi dance, by swirling your feet around in the sand. if you feel a stone or rock about 2-5cm under the sand, stoop down and pick it up. Lovely shellfish.
Put it on the barbeque till it opens, either eat the innards as is, or if you don't like it that way, fry it in garlic butter for a few minutes.
Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

i go to this quaint little place.
they have an over abundance of fish there.
i eye over the selection that is showing themselves off that day
i make my selection and grab at it with my hands!
i successfully catch it! then another! and another!
i continue until i've caught the amount i wish.
i walk smugly away as i know how good at catching fish I am.
i pay the cashier. 65 cents a can.

That doesn't beat FRESH pipis or blue cod.

Primary point about how to catch fish: Fishing is a verb, it requires action and attention. Leaving your line in the water won't get you fish. Your bait is on a hook, you have to actively "hook" a fish.
Wait until you feel a nibble, do nothing, nibble just means the fish caught an edge of the bait. Feel through the pole that the fish is taking several nibbles, this indicates the fish is trying to gobble the whole thing. Once you feel a series of nibbles you have to "set the hook." You set the hook by feeling for that nibble giving a bit of slack and then making an aggressive pull to make sure the hook sets itself in the fish's mouth. Once the hook is set you apply steady upward pressure as you reel, after the hook is set giving too much slack may cause the hook to re-align or lose grip.
There are different ways to catch different fish, the above doesn't work so well with a sword fish or a shark, but for your needs, my advice should be good.
Look up the kind of fish you are fishing for and find advice specific to that fish.
The core principle: Fishing is a verb, it's not a passive act.

A Pipi is a small edible (tasty) shellfish in New Zealand. The name is Maori in origin. I don't know if they exist elsewhere. You generally only eat the tongue, unlike the mussel or oyster.
