Title: Fragnetics freezes
Post by: jfleming9232 on January 28, 2010, 10:23:25 am
Just reinstalled PlaneShift after being absent for about a year.  Install went great and the update went fine.  When I hit play I'm taken to the login screen.  I choose the fragnetics server enter my user name and password.  I'm then taken to the character selection screen which shows my character name but at this point freezes.  My cursor disappears and my character image is not happily rotating in the window.  Any suggestions?

Can you give more information about your system? OS, 3D card, driver, ...

Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c).  As far as I know, it's the most recent driver.

Hmm, intel graphics cards are not very good but the one you have *should* be sufficient to play PS. Unfortunatelly I know little of the intel graphics driver situation on linux so I don't know what to recommend there I'm afraid.

I've been played PlaneShift with this card before (not perfect but acceptable) so I would assume it would still be sufficient (if a little shaky).  Could the problem be with client configuration?

Well you can try to play with the graphics settings. Try to reduce shader quality in pslaunch and so on.

I've got everything set to "low" already.  The weird thing is that everything works perfectly up to that point.  When I log on to fragnetics,  everything just freezes.

Greetings,
usually from 6 month old to 1 year old is the status of drivers shipped in ubuntu.

Sometimes is better to use older or specific version of the driver, try play with it too.

It is my understanding that with Karmic, the xorg.conf file that I usually use to "tweak" the video is no longer included or necessary.  Could the issue be unrelated to video?

Maybe your card is detected incorrectly or the open driver is used. I had freezing problem with it on my ATi card, proprietary driver solved it and I have no more freezes (first I had this issue in VegaStrike, where after loading the world all freezed and even Ctrl-Backspace didn't worked). I think you can still use xorg.conf to force using of specific driver.
The login screen is still 2D, but character creation is showing your character in 3D, so there can be issue with 3D acceleration and OpenGL driver.
