Title: Homosexual Marriages
Post by: Gavvie Strand on February 02, 2010, 04:25:36 am
I couldn't help but notice that you can marry someone of the opposite sex in-game, but are unable  to marry someone of the same sex. Why is this. Nothing too big, but it may add more options to role-play.

personally homosexuals, lesbian or gay, kinda scare me, no offense to them
but its true that it isnt fair, they should be able to go with their...natural callings

I believe this has been covered before...
A homosexual marriage can occur in rp.  However this marriage would not exist on paper (or mechanics wise).  This could be related to how many countries have not legalized homosexual marriages.  As in real life, the relationship could occur, but marriage wouldn't be 'official'

you are 100% correct it has been covered and sometimes in heated debates that wound up getting the thread locked by the moderator.

@ Gavvie: In a game that centers around RP and reading the descriptions of characters is used to only individualized our characters in our mind's eye, it is appropriate to not rely on what is written at the bottom of the description box to find out who is married and who is not.  Those are details that should be found out through RP or by 'seeing' a ring anyways.  So just RP any same sex relationships and likewise do not use the information in someone's info box to automatically have your character now which characters are spouses.

Yes, this has been covered quite a few times. Also, the "married to:" often names an inactive player, particularly on old characters.

I would like to point out that homosexuality is a point that the settings team haven't made any stance of the Octarchy public on. As it's a medieval setting, it could easily be illegal or outlawed. Of course, that would enrage a fair amount of people, but making it legal could detract from the immersion of it being a medieval setting.

I'm of the opinion that homosexual roleplay shouldn't include marriage, as if it was legal/socially acceptable in PS, then there'd be mechanics for it. Also note that PlaneShift is endlessly trying to retain a PG13 rating, imagine how bad things would become if "this game is not appropriate for kids. You can even marry someone of the same sex, and as such is only suitable for 18 years and over" came from the ESRB and other censorship authorities.

This is no new wish. I believe it was even a "Feature request" in the bugtracker already?!

Homosexual relations are possible being roleplayed, although they may not really fit the medieval-like settings.

But I believe changing the game mechanics to allow it was already rejected.
