Title: A bridge and some upgrades to the wilderness maps
Post by: Vakachehk on April 03, 2010, 06:30:29 am
Well I just realised that every time I have to travel to Ojaveda I have to sort of drown through that river.

How about someone implementing a kool looking Ojaveda Bridge. Well first things first that area needs to get the path evened out while going into and out of that valley and a bridge at the bottom. Or you could have a big mud brick/bamboo bridge going across the whole valley but still a small path going down to the water at each side. I think it could be really interesting and make some good look to that map. I do think that some of the wilderness maps need working on as they just don't look right, e.g BDroad1 the road to gug just seems to stop, and what about coming from Hydlaa? and also BDroad2 could have some changes to the camp to make it not as laggy and even paths. Ojaroad1 could have a proper road where everyone runs :). These things make a HUGE difference to the game play of PlaneShift.

Yes I could almost do it myself, but its kinda hard and confusing for me to use Blender I am trying to learn it though.

Hydrophobic enkis ... :P

The place where Serpent Gobbles live looks like some sort of ford though. So I believe it should be rather shallow. Unfortunately, it is not simple to define heights on a heightfield map very accurately.

I am not sure where this gap on BDRoad1 should be ... probably at the junction with the signpost where you can read which direction you need to follow?

It may be true that a rather completely visible road may help traveling, especially for newcomers. On Ojaroad1, this path would lead - from Hydlaa - around the small hills (passing the portal rock), then to the right along the Pool of Stealth, then further down the valley (which is rocky, therefore you won't see much sand on it), on to the Derghir village, a turn to the left, and up to the plateau where Jashoky sells food. But really ... does anyone use this long road? No, most will take shortcuts through the hills. There already exists a thread which discusses the creation of beattracks by travelers, according to their recorded positions...

And making the Explorers Outpost less laggy would mean to reduce the amount of items there. What a pity. It looked so homely...

I've always thought it a bit inconvenient that my leather-armor-clad characters had to wade through a river.

Maybe some rocks in the water to hop across?

I like this idea... especially because such rocks are often places where fishing can be successful.

/me grabs her kayak. OH Yeah!! Where there's rocks, there are rapids.

Seriously, though. I agree wading through the water with armor on is not practical. I like the idea of the rocks or the bridge, either can be nicely designed to blend with nature. The gobbles and the enkis both seem interested in staying in touch with nature. (Though each character has their own motives). It would be practical to have a bridge for the caravans that Jirosh runs, though.

 Vakachehk good thread. Syenna, RL I love rock hopping across rivers. I hope one or maybe both are implemented.

Gag how is a dirt road made? by which where grass cannot grow because to many people run/walk on it. so having a road in which where everyone runs is ideal for both BDroad1 (going to gug from hydlaa and BD) and for OjaRoad1 where everyone takes the short cut through the hills. if there is a main road for OjaRoad1 where there is sort of a weird road and just a small path where the shortcut is then that would be real.

Rocks would be better down the other end so that the gobbles can jump across, a bridge will need to be since Ojaveda wants as many traveler for there economy to get to Akkaio and spend tria and not feel uncomfortable crossing a river to get to there destination.

Esorono runs to the river gleefully to take a dip and instead sees an ugly bridge and starts crying  :'(

Enkidukais are VERY much like cats, they look like them, they are messy like them, they love to engineer :) and... they hate water like them,

Esorono I am sure you could go down stream. and you have no say your not an Enkidukai :P

Cats hate water - that is a myth... actually big cats are often in water - and like to 'wade', especially if it is hot weather, and Cats are generally clean.

This makes me ponder if enki's always land on their four two legs.

call me a traitor if you want, but events from earowo's past, made him this way, water saved his life and oja will never be a home to him again

@Vaka: umm, certain breeds of cats love water....tiger is one of them. Anyways, who ever said that enki's hate water. I take it as something that each individual can decide for themselves. Cats in general are quite clean. I've played both ways: Emm has been known to lick clean a wound if first aid is not readily available, but she would rather bath in water to clean herself fully.

General statement for everyone else: Also, enki's do not own the Oja road. The purpose of a bridge is to ease the difficulties of getting a caravan across the river instead of worrying about being swept away by high water or sinking in the river bed if the wagon is heavily loaded.  Stop thinking of bridges as the ugly concrete structures we have now adays. A very low profile wood bridge can be built that will not ruin the aesthetics of the river, but would increase the safety of merchants importing and exporting goods from the Oja area. There would still be plenty of space to swim, bathe, and fish. It's a bridge not a dam, lol.

I think it's a rather big issue in PS that players associate Enki behavior more with house-cats than with the big cat species.

Big cats enjoy bathing in water, and Enki are based more on big cats (hence, big cat size and fur coloration) so unless Settings information is there saying they have a phobia of water, you can assume they are natural lovers of water.

for the explorers guild camp being laggy, would combining object into single models help, like that circle of sacks around the central bonfire is probably whats creating alot of the lag as they're all individual sacks and probably something like 40 of them too, so creating a single model with them all joined would probably make things a bit more bareable right?

Indeed, the high number of single objects makes it load slowly into the client; and the high number of polygons makes it slow to render once it has been loaded. But I doubt that it can easily be exchanged soon by a completely prepared model on its own, because there is more business now for other projects.

the best way to make the explorers camp not laggy is to put all the items into the map  so you cant right click it and see a description.

as to that I only guessed that enkis hate water since they live in a desert.

And as to having a bridge is not just for caravans, Enkis (Akkaios) would build one for there economy since it will bring more people to Ojaveda if they are scared of water. But yes for caravans as well.
