Title: My Idea of a monster
Post by: Earowo on April 12, 2010, 12:43:53 am
http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af209/Earowo/Drawings/Lakeskimmer.jpg
this is a picture i drew the other day, i thought it was kinda cool, so i wanted to ask if it could be a monster for the game, i figure youd accept anything that adds to the variety ^.^
I calls it a lakeskimmer, its feet let it skim across water :3

[Update 4/15/10]
Specifics:
The Laker Skimmer Has gills, for breathing underwater, and feet with pockets that fill with a gas, that the Skimmer can produce, to Skim across water.
The Lake skimmer can only be above water for about 30 minutes, give or take, it depends on the size and age of the Skimmer.
The Skimmers live in small packs, there will generally consist of 7 or 8 per pack in 1 skimmers lifetime. 1 Skimmer can live to be about 18 Years, they will be confertable and start mating when they reach the age of 8.
They will never leave the water, the way their feet have evolved over time, has left them unable to be mobile out of water.
The skimmer will eat fish, and various bugs that land in, and swim in the water.
The Tail keeps the skimmer balanced, since the skimmer willcrouch while waiting to attack.
The rounded spikes on his back are round looking from the side, but razor sharp from the tip going down, they prevent anything from getting on top of the skimmer.
The Lake skimmer will bash at enemies with its strong pointed snout, and will try to throw its-self at enemies, getting its back to slam into them, knowing that they will land in the water and can easily swim back up.
[More info to come]

Why don't you make a model and submit it for review. Although things seen on the forums generally don't end up in game. The modelers we do have already have assigned projects, so it's unlikely that they'll model your picture for you.

However, including a several different views for modelers is recommended, so good work on that, but there could be more.

Wow, i really like the way that monster looks. any specific color though? That would be important depending on it's environment.

About modeling:

There are a lot of guides for Blender (which has a possibly rather strange interface, but is well supported, and freeware). Even in our board. Search for bananas. ;)

About coloring:

There are reasons why animals look how they do ... camouflage contra signal color protection. I believe because this one seems to be a stealthy, silent hunter, camouflage will probably prevail.

If I get some time, I might model this up.

how does that monster balance? how did it evolve? shouldn't it not need gills if it skims across water? and how does it skim with "bubble pockets"? what's with the tail?

did you rip this creature from spore?  :P

I think these are all valid questions you need to think about. Well, besides the last one. If you want to make any kind of beast for PS, having the answers to those questions is important.

Also, do the bubble pouches inflate and deflate? How are they fill and with what? Is it air from the environment or a gas made in the body? I'm not asking this stuff to pick on you, I just like you're a bit naive about how to get something in game. However, it's good practice to do this sort of thing.

i havnt been able to think through all the details yet, but yeah the pockets would have to inflate and deflate, since it has gills because it can dive underwater, it eats fish, and doesnt leave the water, its always under or on top of it.
water fills up the pockets im not sure quite yet how it would work, but i think some gas from the body would work best

The generic idea is not bad at all ... the refinements will come with time.

how does it balance? answer is it has lived like that its whole life and so did its ancestors so it has the skill to balance
how did it evolve? ?? wtf how did you evovle well you didn't, god made you and the same with this little/big critter but by someone else like Laanx, Talad or Xiosia. (well I'll say it before you start to argue and groan that god is not real blah blah blah, heres one thing if you think you evolved from an ape then sure go right ahead evolve from some ugly hairy thing Id rather get made by God!)
Shouldn't it need gills...? well did you know that Turtles don't have gills and that they can just hold there breath for a very long time, I am guessing the same for this.
how does it skim? kinda like ice skating you know you reache out and skim other than on water.
What's with the tail? why does a horse have a tail?? well to cover its ass that is why :)

Why did the dinosaurs have tails? Well, it is suggested that they used them to not lose their balance. So why shouldn't this creature do the same when it's on the surface?

It's for swatting away flies, but for our own sake I think your right Vakachehk. No decent person wants to see horse ass full on. Disgusting.

Not all animals have <that thing>. I have the proof:

@Earowo: good start! I'd suggest you to do many sketches in different angles and different positions, adding and removing details. Also, drawing the spine (a line of little balls of increasing and decreasing size - you'll erase it later) will improve the harmony and the realism of the back. And if you see something that just looks strange, maybe the artist's best friend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio) could lend you a hand. Good work :)

ROFL..........
You don't really need PS to play in a magic world when you already live in one, or in the middle ages. XD
Don't forget to go to the fountain to fetch some water, or tomorrow morning you won't be able to wash your face. ;)

What is the size of the creature btw? Does it live in families or by itself? I could ask tons and tons of questions, because I have to do that for myself whenever I make up worlds/races/creatures/etc. It's tough work but with a creative mind nothing is impossible.  :D
