Title: PSLaunch problem
Post by: Dracaeon on April 27, 2010, 10:40:13 pm
I've got a problem with pslaunch.  Whenever I do anything in pslaunch, it doesn't affect the game itself.  Also, when I attempt to play from pslaunch, the application just goes white then goes back to the main pslaunch screen.  It does that a few times then crashes.  What can I do????!!!!!  Its annoying because I can't do anything about the considerable lag I've been having.

By the way, I'm on a mac with a PowerPC core and Leapord 10.5.8 [not snow leaopard]

in windows client, when I update with "pslaunch.exe --console" the process fails with:
md5sum of updater zip does not match correct md5sum!!
Updater finished!

I think can be related with the new server location? there's a correct updater zip somewhere?

ok, doing a "pslaunch.exe --repair" worked for my windows client.
Sorry dracaeon, but I never seen the pslaunch interface in Mac osx. I assume that's the same of linux client. so perhaps you have a "repair" button, try to use it.

I have never been able to run the game by using the pslaunch app on my mac. I only use PS launch to get updates and make some settings adjustments. To run the game I have always just run the psclient.app directly.

Ok, so I run PSlaunch, it says there are updates .. I suspect the name of the new server is one of them ...

I run pslaunch and get this ...

[--------------------------------------------------]    5.101MB (100%)   130.7kB/s eta 0s

md5sum of updater zip does not match correct md5sum!!
DEBUG: Closing OpenAL sound system
DEBUG: Closing OpenAL sound system
user@host:~$

md5sum does not match

I dont mean to be a pill, but little snafoos like this will prevent people from playing altogether.
Some will complain on the forums and get help, some will wait a few weeks and try again,
others will just say screw it and find a different game never to return.

I not saying this to be harsh - please dont get me wrong, I just want to point out the fact that small
oversights like this can have undesirable consequences.

I'll try again in a week or two perhaps.

How can you be sure that you have the latest version - when people all over are complaining just today that the updater fails?

Does your client report version 0.5.3 in the window header? If not, your update failed. Try a "Repair" update then...

BTW: Lunch comes after breakfast. ;)

The downgrading to 0.4.0.3 is a common issue for a lot of people when using repair...even if they haven't edited their updaterinfo.xml manually. For some reasons it gets unusable for some people at some point . ;) If you use repair after running into this problem the updater uses the hardcoded update server it has...what is a update server for the 0.4 version. It is said to be fixed in the sourcecode...no idea if it is fixed in any binary build yet. The main problem with this is that without a reinstall you won't be able to get back to 0.5. So the only solution I can offer is to reinstall the latest binary version, make a backup of the whole installation directory and then do the update again. If it fails again go to IRC and bug some devs about it...but at least then you can revert to the backup and don't have to reinstall everything.

Dude, you have a very old copy. (0.4.03.4)
Download the latest version ( 0.5.3 )

I don't get it like this Rigwyn. For me it looks more like the usual downgrade issue.

I was under the impression that he/she was trying to update 0.4.03
Your downgrade explanation makes more sense.

I wonder if the "fix for the hardcoded downgrade URL" is in the update to the new "pslaunch" version - which fails due to a wrong checksum.

Experienced people are able to manually download the new package and unpack the ZIP archive (with subdirectories) over the game installation. But I am afraid that not-so-experienced people will ask me to write a step-by-step guide how to do that for every operating system (instead of asking their "local nerd" for assistance)...

So for the nerds out there:

Download the matching ZIP archive from any update server (see updaterinfo.xml) via HTTP, constructing the filename from "pslaunch" and the target OS: { win32 | win64 | linux32 | linux64 | macosx } and ".zip"; then unpack it with subdirectories over the PlaneShift installation.

About the missing images reported in the errorlog.txt file: Nothing.

Those are known errors with no real importance, regarding the ability to run the game. They will be fixed "real soon (tm)".

About the black/green "tip"... sorry, I don't really understand. Maybe some unreadable server message? Or too tiny font in the message window? But this does not belong to issues with PSLaunch anymore.

The GUI is translatable - see the PS Translation Project (http://pswiki.xordan.com/index.php?title=PS_Translations). But we do not yet have all translations available (contributions are welcome).

We even have some Unicode support for the in-game chat (not sure about chinese though).

The main chat language, though, will be english.

PlaneShift is an international game. Although most people may speak chinese natively, english is the most common language related to computers.

Don't be afraid of your "rather poor" english skills - we already understand you well. And the more you use it, the better you will understand it. "Practice masters."

All the german, frensh, swedish etc. players have their own community, guilds and friends, but are able to share common speech in the "Main" channel in english as good as they can.

Post by: BoevenF on April 30, 2010, 04:26:38 pm
I can confirm that with my personal experience. I'm not native english, but nobody complains about my poor english, even if I'm sure I've made some big mistakes... My greatest fear is unintentionally offend someone but so far nobody has killed me... well a couple of times, actually  :)
and I do learned a lot. I mean, can't type really fast, I still look at the keyboard... but all the players are so kind, even the bad boys  :o, that even being a lurker is funny...

PS. I made a lot of shortcuts for common phrases and actions, that eased my fear and my fingers and in my opinion made a more vivid character. and I thank google translator for that.

PPS: If you'll see a klyros listening quietly some great speech and nodding like an idiot, that's me.

The problem I am having with vs 0.5.3 for launcher for Windows XP is that under servers, both show as failed.

SkyLab (RP) Failed
Ezpcusa (Non-RP) Failed

I am from Ottawa, Canada, if that makes a difference.

I did a repair and everything seems to be ok.   When I go to http://laanx.fragnetics.com/index.php?page=about_page to check on the status of the server, it says that it it is down.

I don't think I am going to the right page to check the server status as I am certain that other people are playing the game.

So, what am I doing wrong?

Oh, as a matter of interest, this is the first time I have every installed the game and I have never played it before, so I have never had a working copy if that makes a difference.

Perhaps it is a firewall issue? or a port issue?

Thanks

Gene

open a command prompt (start>run, then type "cmd") and try to reach the server with a ping, type:

ping 109.168.124.3

if there's no response try:

tracert 109.168.124.3

if you can reach the ip address maybe there is something wrong with a firewall, or a port as well. I remember I've found something about ports, somewhere here..

Most firewalls should allow communication by listening automatically on a random opened port on your machine.

Some software firewalls might be overprotective and may not allow UDP packets sent to any unknown port. The distant game servers expect packets via UDP to their port 7777 (that does not mean that you would have to open your own port 7777, though - your port will be opened randomly).

/me feels like this thread has gotten a little off the real topic... MY problem.

Not to be selfish or anything.

By the way, it seems that mac users all seem to have the problem I'm having, maybe its something wrong with the mac coding...

As already recommended several times before, for Mac users: Move the installation folder of PlaneShift to "Applications".
