Hi,
we may have the chance to finally add some new emotes to our characters. An emote is a way to express an emotion through the game, being a simple smile in text :) up to having an animation for the character. We are interested to hear your wishes on the animations you would like to see. As always we do not have infinite resources, so we will have to prioritize, so when you create a list of emotes, please list the emote you would like to see in order of priority. Thanks!
The idea is that any of the animations will have a sound associated as well.
Some example (in no particular order to avoid influencing the thread): clap hands, laugh, bow, send a blown kiss, scared, dance (overused in any other mmorpg), yes! (win expression), combat skills (like making few attacks animations), angry, happy, sad, ...
-
Laying down!
-
Laying down
Eat and/or drink
-
Most important for my taste would be diversity related to the actions a character is able to do:
- fight vs. mine vs. harvest vs. fish
- bow / curtsy vs. greet / wave vs. regal salute
- agree (victory / thumb up) vs. disagree (wriggling finger / folding arms)
- ehm, swimming existed already, partially?!
I believe that some emotions are still mainly related to facial animations which our models possibly don't support yet. But using "emoticons" ... hmm. Would we drift too much away from a RPG towards a "3D IRC" level if we used that?
-
I like "emotes" as they are now, with /smile etc... just adding animations to that would be great!
/yes and /no for nodding and shaking head, /impatient for tapping a foot impatiently while waiting for someone to smelt your metal, and /lie for lying down would be great!
/laugh
perhaps rather than normal emotes in text, /:O /:) /:P etc?
I agree with LigH, having the emotes kept in commands as opposed to a filter into text would be best (unless the filter removes the smiley from Main and replaces it with the animation and perhaps a localised /smile message.
-
There are more important things to add in game than emotes. We can use our imaginations to think when somebody says "Geoni has fallen asleep" that person must be asleep. No need for unnecessary things. Implement cloaks please.
Soooo... to the emotes.
-
Cloaks will come in time ... It is just complicated to make cloaks in a way that they move together with the body below.

A person skilled in model rigging does not mean they are skilled in creating model textures, or even models themselves.
If the team has a new prospect that is skilled in a certain area, the team would be foolish to simply tell them that they aren't needed to work on things they are skilled at, because, other areas of the game need developed first.
Game development consists of hundreds of different categories. It's not a "lets do this now and tell everyone else to wait while we work on it" type of situation.
-
I agree with Neko. It would be like telling all cab drivers "Listen, we need more planes flying... Could you meet at the airport at 8 tomorrow and pilot one to France?" Doesn't go well. (No offense to cab drivers, pilots or France in general ;) ).
That being said, here's my list:
Attack animations (read somewhere about possible skill related attack animations. Would be cool to see. )
Laying down
Clap
Agree/Disagree (Nodding / shaking head)
Point
Kneel (Diaboli/Ynnwn already have the animation, though used as /sit)
Shrug
Salute
Wave (Do Nolthrirs already have this as /greet?)
Bow (Klyros already have the animation, though used as /greet and /wave)
-
It might be amusing if there were a number of primitive movements that could be strung together into a more complex series of movements with a shortcut.
Some things that might be interesting:
/laydown = laying down with head on the ground as if unconscious
/recline = lay back like a kran ( head off ground )
/taunt character = Abe's Oddesy has an amusing taunt emote that included an audible hiss and a milly threatening gesture
/slap character ( perhaps a slapping sound if target is in range )
/diss character = make an insulting dismissive gesture
/crawl
/roll ( roll over like a dog )
/tumble ( sommersault )
/flip ( could be preceeded by /run and /jump )
/turn X degrees ( ie /turn -45 , /turn +45 )
/turnhead ( would be nice if something like that make the view pan left or right too )
/flinch
/drink
/eat
/hug character ( if in range )
/point object ( ie point at character or object )
/puke
/spit
Might be interesting if you could change the disposition of your character
- sad: shoulders rounded over, head down
- happy: straight posture, head up
-
Lay & kneel (and a proper sitting animation for Diaboli and Ynnwn perhaps?), and if it would count with this stuff, proper sitting-in-a-chair/bench poses
Fishing/Mining/Fighting all different
Picking up items
Dancing
Clapping/Cheering/Booing
Thumbs up/Thumbs down
Yes (Nod)/No (Shake)
Shrug
Wave/Bow/Curtsy (female Ynnwn already do this quite nicely as /greet)/Salute
Shiver/Cold
Scolding/Angry (Wagging fingers, shaking fists, etc)
-
/drink
/eat to move your hand to your mouth when food or a mug is held (yes I know /drink is already in use ;) )
/swear
/curse a semi random phrase appropriate to the characters religion (could get followers of banned religions in trouble ;D )
going out on a limb.... /sit recognising the proximity of a chair and sitting properly
-
Please no animated emots for the text box; it draws away from the RP and creativity of writing expressions/actions for the characters.
As a side note I would rather see time and effort go toward artwork/programming for additional clothing [ie cloaks, bracers, variety of dress/shirts/pants if the character is not wearing armor] and more skills [hide in shadows, alchemy, etc.]
ok back to the topic:
Laying down
Laughing
pointing
shrugging
salute, bow, curtsy
head movement up/down=yes
head movement side to side=no
[To make programming easy create salute, bow, and curtsy greetings available to all gender and races upon creation. Let the player make the appropriate shortcut for their characters' needs. ie: a female in plate mail would probably not curtsy ;D]
If I think of others I'll be glad to make more suggestions, but those are some good ones for general expressions.
-
/point Makes your person point in direction.
/sleep Makes your person lay down on their side and snooze.
/facepalm Makes your person hold his head and shake it.
/rub belly Makes your person rub his/her stomach.
/flap For klyros they flap their wings.
/wag For enkidukai it makes them wag their tail.
/idle Makes person do idle movement...Also give us an option to turn ours off...Looks odd when I'm in a serious conversation and I randomly scratch my head every few seconds ::|
/cast <magic way> <realm> Casts the magic way animation of choice only if you have the levels however.
/swing Makes user swing whatever they have in their right hand.
-
This thread should possibly be split into a discussion part, too.
In contrast to others posting here am I all (and only) for animations. I have no use at all for non-animated emotes. Those I can write myself and even put variations in them.

a friend of mine once said that cab drivers in India would make insanely awesome fighter pilots. :)
anyway so sort of animation for crafting skills would be nice too, hammering on the anvil, or stirring a pot, poking the coals in a furnace. while you are working with those things, would be nice.
-
i thought it was lie down, not lay down?
wow
-
/idle Makes person do idle movement...Also give us an option to turn ours off...Looks odd when I'm in a serious conversation and I randomly scratch my head every few seconds ::|
 Yes, definitely! Best suggestion so far!
"/idle off" + "/idle <min. seconds between>"
__
@ Sarras:
Probably yes - if I learned grammar right, I believe: if you rest, you "lie down"; but you "lay down" someone or something else, not your own body.
-
/kick
/dance !!!!!!
/slap
/punch
/sit on chair
/cross legs
/twiddle thumb
/feel (HAHA jokes)
/rub nose

Some races have a dance animation already... I suggest everyone to check the Fenki one ;D
-
/itch bum

/crack knuckles
/tap feet [great for impatient women]
/cuddle
/hiss [enki's]
/raspberry [poking the tongue out childishly]
/bite nails [scared/bored emote]
/dig gold [picks nose, this one is a joke]

Bracers are already in PlaneShift art files, they just need quests written for their implementation, or NPC sellers. (arm bracers). Cloaks are complicated as has been already mentioned. Skills are a whole different ballpark, requiring complex scripting and formula and little art input at all. What is apparent by Talad's post is that there is an animator available to work on the skeletal animations, and so they are working on adding animations.
At /slapbutt and all that, seriously, hell no. Just no.
-
@ Geoni:
But you noticed that Talad asked for the most serious examples? ::) -- Annoy the staff and you will be punished by delays. :-X
-
Yeah, or even worse, updates that break the client :(
-
I like using emotes, and in my opinion those lacking movement the most are:
/nod (/agree having the same gesture)
/laugh (head rising and torso bending back, perhaps?)
/drink (/cheer same gesture?) as previously proposed
obviously all the emotes will be great improvement, but I think those are a more affordable task.
how about that swimming gesture? a complicated task, isn't it? :P
-
What is annoying is an opinion. Some of my suggestions may have been loony. Some weren't.
I'll just say the ones I think are important are:
/cross arms
/hands on hips [along with the /cross arms, this is for people who are bored, tired, assertive, have attitude, and many other qualities.]
/wink [lovers, friends, playful people, many do it.]
and /lay ears back [can't tell you how many enki's I've seen do this]
Those are actually things that I see RP'd alot, so they should be considered for implementation.
-
and /lay ears back [can't tell you how many enki's I've seen do this]
This. Ears are quite expressive for anything feline-looking. Perhaps there should be a set, for example:
/ears back
/ears twitch (a brief version of the next one)
/ears swivel (ears swivel to the sides, maybe one ear swivels towards whatever's targeted)
/ears perk (and/or a /perk command in general)
-
I second Candy's suggestion. Of course, if we can control ears, we should be able to express with tails as well.
-
and wings then too
-
...and crest. Anyway every new gesture is welcome!
-
The crests move? o.O
Anyway, I have one more suggestion:
/rude (sticking one's tongue out, raising a certain finger, something like that)
-
Another vote each for; lying down, a sitting pose that actually looks relaxed, idle animation options, gait options, and being able to sit in a chair (either through an item action or the command, easier through the item).
For gait options (in addition to what others have suggested), I suggest hunching, stiff, efficient running (unlike the plodding characters do now), lunging, matching gait with another player, sailor's gait, broken leg(s), tip toeing (or "rocks in the heels of your shoes"), and possibly the M.C. Hammer shuffle, but I assume that would be too silly for most people to stand.
I want a proper "collapsed from exhaustion" emote; it's not sitting, lying down, or being dead.
Backhanding someone; an alternate form of the slap.
Having a mental breakdown; effectively a different animation that leads to the "collapsed from exhaustion" pose.
Having a seizure (probably only linked to status afflictions).
Lighting yourself on fire (requires a fire source, should act like escalating poison).
Giving someone the evil eye. This expression should either look hilarious, disturbing, or both.
Can picking one's nose be used with a lock pick from inventory? Can you kill yourself this way? Free lobotomies? Would your lockpicking skill matter?
Enjoy drink.
Enjoy food.
Pat another person's head, patronizingly.
-
(snip) and possibly the M.C. Hammer shuffle, but I assume that would be too silly for most people to stand.
(snip again) Having a seizure (probably only linked to status afflictions).
Perhaps the MC Hammer shuffle could be put on EZ and not Skylab?
Also, I think /seizure should be available regardless of status affliction - some people might want to RP having "the falling sickness". Can't say I haven't considered doing that to one of my characters.
-
It seems like something that you shouldn't be able to control, most people can't seize on command. Although they can build up a mental breakdown all on their own. I expected that it would be tied to those kinds of diseases when they are implemented in the game.
-
Well, of course the character isn't in control, but the roleplayer controls the characters. Presently if someone wants to play an epileptic, they have to pick when the seizures happen, no randomization required. I suppose there'll eventually be a stat bar for how full your bladder is, too, huh? ;D
-
I doubt it, most realistic games seem to veer off of the stuff that would distract younger players. Although, I am fairly sure most diseases can be implemented. I don't see why they would put them in the lore if they weren't planning on doing so.
-
A poke one?
I really like poking people.
Maybe a /glare one where beams of ice-blue light shoot from your eyes, freezing/ asplodin the object of your gaze. XP
-
Maybe a /glare one where beams of ice-blue light shoot from your eyes, freezing/ asplodin the object of your gaze. XP
No.
-
I must say that I didn't think so.
-
Missing the most:
- Laying down (on the back, on the side, falling/fainting, sleeping and crawling. At least. :) )
Regarding actual actions:
- Picking up objects.
- Working (as in showing that you're crafting, repairing...)
- Giving an object
Pure emotes:
- Kneeling
- Praying (possibly one per god)
- Hands in pockets / Hands crossed behind the back (even when walking)
- Shouting, with hand(s) in front of the mouth
- Raising a hand (as in answering a call, voting, etc.)
- Leaning on a wall
-
And most important: /moon (http://www.thenoobcomic.com/index.php?pos=387) ;D
-
I think the most important thing is to be able to sit properly in chairs
You should be able to right click a chair, and click on a sit buttong, and then physically sit in the chair, its real important, the Menki sitting, takes up an entire bench
-
the Menki sitting, takes up an entire bench
That is not /sit that is /lounge ;)
