I run mandrake 9.1 on a 386 and sorta new to Linux anyway
i dont know how to get this game runnning to even create a char
hope someone can help with getting it going

hey, assuming that you are serious (and that is a bit hard to assume), you\'re out of luck, because a) it won\'t run on a 80386, b) you really better figure cvs thing out, c) you will have to figure shared library issues out, and you don\'t appear to be capable of that, d) i\'m too bored to continue :-)

sorry, i shouldnt have said \'386\'. Its a AMD Athlon 2.0ghz
PS sounds like a really kewl game but ive seen some posts stating that there \'isnt much to do\'. Does that mean that it is sorta disfunctional and too early in the project to enjoy it as a full gaming experience?
I am porting myself away from windows and used to play Ultima
Online for years and am hoping to find a similar MMORPG to enjoy on a Linux platform

Planeshift is still very much in the pre-alpha stage.
You can move around part of the realm, talk to others and collect gems. That\'s about it. Don\'t expect planeshift to be a fully finished game for a long, long time or you\'ll just be disappointed.
The reason everybody still plays is to enjoy the beautiful world and maybe help the developers by spotting bugs and suggesting ideas.
Also the Planeshift client for Linux still has some issues that need to be resolved, so if you\'re this new to linux I\'d wait for a bit.

There is a pretty great community to be intereact with there as well and lovely extras thrown in by the devs, such as crystals to collect, an online weapon/item shop and a quest to complete :D

I like the idea of porting oneself :-)
you can certainly test it, it\'s good for that and I reckon it\'s a good experience anyway. besides, by the time it gets playable, would you rather be totally clueless if you had chosen not to play it yet?
the downloadable distro didn\'t work for me, if you can\'t make it work either, you would have to compile your own crystal space and cel and, of course, planeshift.
crystal space is a little tricky cause you need to get a correct cvs snapshot, 9th April 2003 works for me.
get same date cel to be sure, although it seems it\'s not that crucial.
checkout cvs version of planeshift, you need to get the correct branch, I use MB010.
compile and install crystal space, set environment variable CRYSTAL to where it got installed to (by default /usr/local/crystal)
compile and install cel, if it gets installed elsewhere than crystal space, you should set CEL env variable.
compile planeshift, if it fails to link complaining of numerous c++ish unresolved symbols, you need to remove out/linuxx86/psaws.o and out/linuxx86/pscomp.o \"jam\" again.
then there\'s turn to -relight and ./updater, which you can find info on the forum I believe.
a good doc on using CVS is available on sourceforge.net, good luck!
