whats it mean and does it stop me from uploading my char.????

This is usually the result of a failure for the server to be able to talk to your client.  This is usually because of a firewall or the way your ISP is set up.  The client can talk to the server but when the server tries to respond back it cannot ( or is not allowed ) to talk to your client.

Make sure that you allow UDP traffic on port 13331.

I think a bit more clarification is due here.
Based on my own experiences this last week, it looks like there are two \"connections\" needed to play Planeshift.

I know, udp is connectionless, but you get the point.

Anyway, for all of you playing in your local lan with a router/firewall in the middle:

Connection 1: From your PC to Planeshift Server
PC (random source port) --> Planeshift (port 13331)

Connection 2: From Planeshift Server to your PC
Planeshift (didn\'t check the source port) --> PC (port 13331)

You have to allow these two connections in you firewall. Besides, depending on your router configuration, you probably will have to play a bit with NAT (to make sure your public IP port 13331 gets redirected to port 13331 of the machine that is playing.)

This doesn\'t look too right for me, because I heard someone say he was playing with several computers on a local lan, and that doen\'t fit this scheme, so maybe this isn\'t the right set up, but it\'s the only way I\'ve been able to \"play\" so far.

(\"play\" is really an overstatement, since my char moves sooooooo slowly...)

NOTE: If you tried to upload any character and you got linkdead, chances are very hight you won\'t be able to play that character even if you set up your connection right. Just create a new character and enjoy.

Hope this helps.

I\'ve tried several times to create a character, once I got past the name already used errors, I got linkdead errors on creating 4 different character names.  When I then try to login as those characters I get an error saying my account is not usable and to contact an admin.

I am running the client on windows xp and I\'m behind a linux firewall... I added a rule to dnat udp 13331 and I still got the errors.  I see nothing in my logs that say anything is being dropped.

What now?

Nevermind, I got it working by entering the ip address of the server instead of the server name: 203.81.47.27

If your firewall can be set up to allow for udp traffic on port 13331 comming from planeshift.fragnetics.com it should not be a problem.

I have absolutely no idea about IP addresses or any of that stuff, maybe if you guys were a little more specific, like absolute directions on what to try, that would be more helpful, because I am having the same problem and so is my friend. You guys need to be a little more clarifying with bugs because (no offense intended) their is an awful lot of them, for instance, it took me about 2 hours to find your ONLY server address, and now I have this problem.  It takes alot to get me steamed but this is pretty low standards for what could be one of the hugest free MMORPGs on the web.

So basically, if you could supply an extremely specific set of directions for the \"LinkDead\" problem I would appreciate it, mail me at NeO_BigBird@hotmail.com

The simple fact of the matter is that WE DONT KNOW why this problem occurs.  It works for all the developers and many, many others.  There does seem to be a group of people that are having this linkdead problem.   The best idea I have here is that your machine is not allowing UDP network traffic because of firewalls, proxies.  If you have one of those setup then that would be good to know.

And consider from our point of view.  Everything works fine for me and people I talk to on IRC.  When people report Linkdead there is not much I can really do to help.  It\'s not like we purposely put bugs in to annoy people.  If I cannot repeat it then as far as I\'m concerned it\'s not a bug I can fix any time soon.

As for the server, it\'s posted on the main site under downloads->offical servers as well as mentioned in the player guide as well as many times on this forum.

I take VERY great exception to this.  We could very easily say \'The source code is all there why don\'t you fix it yourself\'  ( note that some people DO actually fix problems they have and send us code fixes, for which we are very greatful and is one of the true meanings of opensource ).  I spend several hours a day helping people the best I can.  I think that we do a very good job at helping people.

Planeshift is still very much a work in progress and apart from source code there\'s still a lot left to be done. I can understand the difficulty finding the link to the server address itself, and we are looking for ways to improve the way information is presented across all the Planeshift-related sites so that players will get the information they want easily.

It\'s certainly not easy to work on a project as huge as this, partly because it\'s open source and developers are scattered across the world. I doubt any of us really sit together daily like say in an office.

It\'s demoralizing to read the occassional critique or flame and all I can say is that it doesn\'t help if you\'re going to say this or that is not up to snuff. Planeshift is a growing community, people are starting to pick it up, but there\'s still a long way to go.

Some encouragement, even offers of technical assistance and support will bring this a long way compared to non-constructive criticism.
Title: sorry
Post by: NeO_BigBird on May 29, 2003, 09:05:40 pm
I apologize, and after reading my email I see how I came accross offensive, and that\'s not how I ment to write it. It\'s obvious you guys are working really hard, but what I was trying to say is, that your game is obviously grandious in the idea, let alone what I\'ve seen so far, which is complementary intended. My frustration lies in the fact that you guys are obviously good with computers, but not all players are computer savy, which, after reading the forum of bugs, is obviously proving to be a wall or roadblock to solving many of the glitches with this game. It can actually be funny to watch a player post their problem, and after you give them their solution, I can almost read their face of confusion when they reply something like:
\"Could you be a little more specific, i dont get it\"

I apologize for any degenerate feelings I may have caused to your team, but with all due respect, if your job is too go and solve bugs, then maybe looking outside your computer, such as trying to install planeshift at the local library\'s internet accessable computers, would be in the best interest in the numerous players with this bug, as you\'ve stated that it\'s obviously common.

Keep up the good work, and I\'ll keep checking to see if the problem gets solved.
P.S., if it\'s helpful:

Windows M.E.
Wireless Network Connection
No Firewall

No problem.  I can see how it is fustrating for people when it doesn\'t work.  But it also very fustrating for me.  I\'ve tried on a couple of different systems and cannot get this linkdead problem. So we try our very best to get rid of any problems that I can see.  Since I cannot reproduce this particular one, it makes it very hard for me to figure out what is causing it and I have no idea if we have fixed it or not.

We can only continue on and offer possible problems ( like the firewall ) but if we say we don\'t have an answer then we probably don\'t.  We may have a little more experience then some people but this is a new project for most of us and we are still learning the ins and outs of it.

Thanks, and I appreciate your help!
My friend has a question for you though, he wants to know if since you guys programmed the error messege to pop up, because it pops up as a planeshift window looking thing, that if you have a programmer who may know the reason for the link dead messege to pop up, since he programmed the game to do so.

I have DSL, with a router that has a built in firewall, I can connect fine without enabling anything specific.

Just a thought.

Hi, I\'m yet another fish who\'s been left linkdead in the water. Funny thing is that I played PS about 5 weeks ago and it was working fine at that time. I haven\'t changed my system nor my net connection since that time (Win 98se, college internet). If that doesn\'t help anyone I\'ll get out my voodoo instruments and try to assist that way. Good luck, I hope someone finds the fix soon (I\'d really like to continue playing this cool game).

hmm...you know I have a friend who has this same problem.

But anywise, the only thing I can think of is the fact he uses AOL while I use Earthlink.

I used to use AOL my self a while ago(about 10 years ago), but I left due to the fact that at the time they used a pseudo acceleration technique that involved an extra router(i.e. not a real PPP or SLIP connection could happen)

I do not believe they have changed their system yet.
And if the Link Dead people are using AOL this might be the cause.

Just some food for thought.

Well, for me, I looked at the FAQ, and found a problem it mentioned that is related to being linkdead:

Quote
8. Win XP users (and maybe other users aswell):

If you have trouble with logging in, go to the properties of \"psclient.exe\". Under compatibillity, change the compatibillity from Win95 into Win98/ME.

After you do that you should have less or no trouble logging in.

Having trouble logging in, which could be read as going linkdead when you login/submit your character, is basically the same thing.  Try the above solution, see if it works for you.  I hate double-posting this, as I already did in the message sticked in this forum on Linkdeath.  Worked perfectly for both the systems I\'ve tried the game with, as well as helped out somebody else who tried it.

Now if I could only figure out how to get better than an average 0.12 fps, so I could possibly play the game, I\'d be set.

Actually in my friends case he cannot do that, since he is using Windows ME.

Sorry, just trying to spread the word for the WinXP users.

And tell your friend I\'m really, really sorry he\'s stuck with Win ME.

Linkdead,

I was playing the game fine, then had to reinstall XP and reinstalled Planeshift and now I get this error. I tried first logining in under my last name and then tried created a new account...

Nothing has changes since last time.
