Title: New stuff good stuff ! Way to go!
Post by: Roled on June 12, 2010, 05:21:46 am
I just want to thank the dev's for the new stuff in the upgrade. I am sure there are many things I haven't seen yet but here's three.

The WATER in the lake is ridiculously good. It shimmers. That's really cool.

The aranagmas {or whatever the heck those bugs are called} disappear fast. That's more challenging to loot, cool again.

and the mobs I've encountered are much quicker on their feet.  >:( Good thing you gave us rivnaks before that was implemented.

I am sure you'll get a bunch of 'tester' feedback about what's not so hot, so first, GOOD WORK and THANKS!  \\o//  \\o//  \\o//

Thanks Zon. You won't believe how much work it was. I'm still downloading a new client to check it out :)

RP'ing Enkidukai just got a huge shot in the arm. Those narrow back, twisting alleys are fantastic.

Pretty nice around there, if a bit difficult to navigate at first. I like the carpet-doors.

Yeah, I saw he returned to resume his work on Tribes. It's excellent, I think it'll be very cool when it's completely done and used in-game.
And weltall is always awesome, of course, everyone knows code monkeys are cool! :D

Oh wow, sweet! :D
I still remember testing them ages ago with Rolenun. We would clone them until there were about 100 running around and then use a huge AoE damage potion to massacre them all

Good to see the map is liked :)

I'd like to thank the rest of the team, jorrit for the water (I actually like this more than Kore Dsar) and a special thanks to Luca (Talad) for putting over 30 hours of work into fixing Kore Dsar because I got alot of the technical things mixed up (meshnames, some texture problems, etc.) and he also did the lighting animation, exporting, testing.... he does alot more than many players realise.

Thanks to the players for supporting the project, and I hope you enjoy the new things as I do!

The NPCs now associate themselves to a "tribe" organisation, so if they feel overwhelmed they will run to other tribe members for help.

It's weird, I find that I'm getting a loss of lag. Anyways, I hope that nobody spoils how to find bracers or where to find bracers for me  :D They sound cool. A great addition to the whole 'look'.

The game runs for me faster than the earlier version and the skin of my drifter lookes nice in the sunshine :)

Well I love the new water thanks Jorrit for that. There is still alot of inprovements that can be made with it like the edges look kind of funny. And having ripples. But it is a huge steep forward and so Congratulation!

Also Dsar Kore looks amazing. I love every single part about it. But to note I know there is still more work on this as I have already found 2 simple bugs.
1) when you go up the ramp toward the statue look toward the right on the ground there is a texture error there
2) at the museum look around the back. The window is not connected to the building.

But those bugs are bugs you can find anywhere. But other than that it is great and a huge step forward for PlaneShift! next 0.6 :D I've heard one secret thing about it hehe, not telling ;D

the one thing i have not yet understood about this game, is the ground itself, nothing seems to AXTUALLY BE SOLID
if you look at water for example, there is a flat sheet of color at the TOP of where thw water is, but its air underneath, as for ground, there is a single flat sheet, and nothingness underneath, how come nothing is solid? wouldnt you be less likely to fall off the map if it werent only one sheet of ground? and wont water have to be solid eventually anyway to be able to swim in it? and dive under it?

The characteristic of something being solid is not constrained by any concept of mass in a computer game. Solid is simply saying that an object cannot enter its physical boundaries in the game world. This is provided by an additional structure that is part of the model file. If an object does not have this mesh, you simply walk through it. In the same manner, an effect like water happens because you define a single layer with the properties for water. An additional level of detail simply needs to be added to the map that defines a waterlike environment when you submerge the character in it. Patience, it will probably happen in time.

Please, do report those in the BugTracker so they can be fixed A.S.A.P! :D

As verden says, quite normal. This is how most games create water:
- There is a thin "water surface layer" which is laid on top of a "hole" in the ground/surface layer of the world.
- So if you look onto that layer, you see a water-like distortion of the light, wave/ripple effects etc. It looks like a water surface.
- If you go below this water surface layer, an event is triggered which does the following:
- It removes the water surface layer, and replaces it with with a similar layer which looks like what you would see if you were submerged and look at the surface.
- A layer or effect is placed over the camera (your screen) to make your vision hazy and blue like it is when you are underwater.
- Often some extra light effect is added like a sun-flare.
- It now looks as if you are under water.
- If you go above the surface level, an event is triggered again and the water and flare effects are removed from the camera (your screen) and the water-surface layer is reverted to what it was before you entered the water.
- And now it looks like you're above water again.

So, you can compare this with digging a hole in real-life, putting some layer of rippling plastic over it and then covering your eyes with blue see-through plastic.
There is no water in the hole, but it looks like it.

And that's how it works ;)

I think the rivers look real nice now, by the way. If the above gets added, it would be excellent. I suppose swimming mechanics will take a while though.

Sounds as if people are getting a taste of the good stuff (as in, nice graphics) and are now addicted, wanting more. I don't blame you, but I'm sure it takes a very long time full of hard work by few people for what has been done in this update. Nonetheless, we can all dream.

Guess this makes me want to say to the PS team: Thanks again!  \\o//

Thanks Geoni for getting this thread back on the Congratulations and Appreciations track...
I also want to say thanks for making the mobs move around when they respawn. That keeps us more on our toes out there in the wildlands.

Thanks again to the testers too who made sure all theses new things work, and are still fixing stuff that isn't. Thanks you gms and devs and all the other titles

Of course it still needs a lot of work, but a GM can already do "/playanimation swim" (or somesuch) in-game and the character will swim in the air :)

I wonder if kran will be able to swim...If they can, I doubt it will be graceful  :P

It seems like a lot of low-level work was done in the last couple of years and that it is getting to the point where the changes are more "visible", which is a nice thing. It also seems like this very is slightly less jumpy than the last. So if there were any changes to stuff like proximity-list optimization, I think y'all are on the right track. If Kran are stone, it would somewhat be silly if they could. Of course that doesn't rule out some sort of internal bladder that would act as a bilge. I guess.

Great work in progress here!

Of course it still needs a lot of work, but a GM can already do "/playanimation swim" (or somesuch) in-game and the character will swim in the air :)

If you want to have a swim on your own and do not mind whether anyone else can see the animation, there is still

Code: [Select]
/testanim swim 0.3 0.3 (or whatever fade times you like)
Also works great for cliff diving!
