Your favorite quotation and a bit about why.

"Quotation, n. The act of repeating erroneously the words of another."

- Ambrose Pierce

This is likely my favorite quote. Why? It's hilarious.

"If anyone looks that close, just kick 'em."

Perfect advice for when you've walked out of the house accidentally wearing two different socks, or anything else that could make you feel self conscious... Pretty sure one of my (Great?)Grandparents originated it though couldn't tell you who, when, or where.

"I don't mean to seem unsympathetic, but I am, so that's how it comes across."
- Marcus Brigstocke

I love this one 'cause it expresses my sentiments so perfectly. Specifically, I like that it's an apology for not seeming more sympathetic, not for not being more sympathetic. As in, it's apologizing for the appearance, not for the actual feelings.

Tupac Amaru Shakur. Because someone had to quote 2pac.

And Phinehas, you need to be more "seemingly unsympathetic" around here, people are forgetting your trademark coldness.

1: "Just because you cease to be blind does not mean everything will be revealed to you."

2: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success." - Ralph Waldo Emerson. (It has many flaws, but it is heartfelt, and gives the right idea.)

I first saw that as a permutation saying "I don't mean to sound cold, vicious, or cruel, but I am, so that's how it comes out."

"I'm sorry. We're sorry for the massive disruption it's caused their lives. There's no one who wants this over more than I do. I'd like my life back." - Tony Hayward, B.P. CEO

This was said by Tony Hayward in reference to the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill. The fact that this individual was so concerned with his own personal comfort and showed so little concern for the record breaking damage that he was causing to the environment and numerous working class citizens actually shocked me. Worse than that was the fact that he was clueless enough to blurt out something like this in front of the press.

Perhaps this belongs in an "infamous quotes" thread ..

How can you be just like a real techie? Frequently use the word 'irrelevant', but never spell it correctly. Try 'irrelivant', 'irelivent', and 'irrevelant' to start with, but be sure to develop your own sub-literate variations for extra coolness! --Jeffrey Carl

Why?  Because I'm surrounded by techies who can't spell. :)

Treat me like a criminal,

It is by definition impossible to have several favourites, but I have a couple that are tied so closely I can't choose one from among them.

Firstly, an old saying I live my life by;
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Second, a flavor text from a certain card game many of you will be familiar with;
"Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight /everything/ with fire!"
 - Jaiya Ballard, task mage

And finally a historical one, from the mouths of lady Nancy Astor and Winston Churchill;
Astor: "If I were your wife, I would poison your coffee."
Churchill: "If you were my wife, I'd most certainly drink it."

There's plenty of others, but these stick out the most at the moment.

"Die Menschen der tiefen Traurigkeit verraten sich, wenn sie glücklich sind: sie haben eine Art, das Glück zu fassen, wie als ob sie es erdrücken und ersticken möchten, aus Eifersucht – ach, sie wissen zu gut, daß es ihnen davonläuft!" (Nietzsche - Jenseits von Gut und Böse/279)

English translation:
"Men of profound sadness betray themselves when they are happy: they have a way of embracing happiness as if they wanted to crush and suffocate it, from jealousy: alas they know only too well that it will flee." (Nietzsche - beyond good and evil/279)

the next two favourites:
"To make a dream come true you need a dream to start with." and "There are no miracles in this world. There's only coincidence, the inevitable and the actions people take."

"Excuses are tools of incompetence, built upon monuments of nothingness and those who practice their uses are seldom capable of anything else." - This is the personal statement of one of my lab mate's sorority.

"I may hate what you say, but I will defend to the death the right for you to say it." - [*edit* Apparently Voltaire beat me to this one :p Thanks Gurth]

"Sometimes in life there really are bonds formed that can never be broken. Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what; maybe you’ll find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding, but there is also the chance that the one person you can count on for a lifetime, the one person who knows you, sometimes better than you know yourself, is the same person who's been standing beside you all along." - Bride Wars.  This quote describes my soul mate and best friend in the entire world, and we snicker as we plot her wedding, and how I'm most likely to come storming down the aisle tackling her.
