Title: Poll for interest in chess event
Post by: Perlam on June 26, 2010, 07:04:37 pm
Hello all,

I was thinking the other day to make a chess event in game for all of those that are interested. The most ideal is to have 32 players as chess pieces, iow a life-size chessboard with life-size people. B ut when there are not that many people interested, other options have been thought of.

Therefor my question: if such an event would be held, would you participate?

A: Yes, Defo!
B: Yes
C: I like the idea, but i don't know yet
D: No
E: No way, that's just lame!

With regards, Perlan

Perlam, the idea of a chess tournament sounds great; however having the characters as chess pieces may be a bit too ambitious.

What about a regular IC chess tournament? Challengers could announce their moves so all present could follow in their own way. There could be an entrance fee and appropriate prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the tourney. The good part about that approach is that the matches could take place over time at a particular location; only really needing the two contestants and a judge/referee at any one match. The tourney location could then be a focus for RP during the course of the tournament.

My suggestion would be somewhere in the main city; perhaps sponsored by a Guild so that their premises could be used. In that way only contestants and those that wished to pay the entrance fee would be able to attend.

Just some suggestions; not trying to dismiss your original concept; just think it may require too many players participating at the same time with the numbers which have been observed during my game sessions.

P.S. A: Yes, Defo!

Isn't chess a mini-game already or am I missing something?

Human chess pieces? Did you watch too much Harry Potter, or Alice in Wonderland? Good luck getting 32 people who want to do this.

Being new to the game perhaps it is likely me that had missed it. All the better then if there is already game mechanics installed to handle the tourney.   ;)

We have "Groffeltoe" as minigame, available in Brado's tavern "Th' Broken Door" in central Akkaio.

Also Kerol and friends invented "Octarch's Chess" (~4 years ago), which Meoeor and Vaieund are playing at the campfire near the Eagle Bronze Doors fortress, but unfortunately you can't see that yet. It has a quite different board layout and rather complex rules, is not exactly similar to the Chess game known on earth (possibly a bit closer to the chinese chess).

Ocharch's Chess board (http://www.ligh.de/PlaneShift/oc_board.jpg) (work in progress, not final)

C. Chess can take a bit of time, especially if you are having to explain rules as you go along. Its a good participatory idea, but better to use something that will play out quicker. I'm not sure if the players are going to like standing around for an hour plus for one game.

D. Not with human pieces. You can wait for the octarch's chess game to come out.

So if this is Octarchy Chess, where is the original version of Chess referenced by the name? Is it exactly as complicated as chess, or was something beyond movement added?
Why can't a minor variant of real life chess be used as well? It wasn't created by culture, it was created by the study of war. War doesn't change for such a relatively similar universe like Plane Shift, only the instances of war. So, the game of chess would not change in playstyle. In board posted above uses hexagonal spaces, which limits the directions of movement to 6 instead of 8. (It's also a pain to carve on a table.) This limits the importance of piece placement (such as rotating a strait line of pieces no longer leave holes), and reduces the learning value of the game (for war).

How is the "Groffeltoe" mini-game accessed? I didn't notice the tables could be activated.

I believe two players "use" one of the tables (one is a simple, the other a bigger board), then they can put or remove pieces freely. I don't know if there are any rules enforced by the server; the last time I played (months ago) it was not - so the players are responsible to obey any rules. I should try it again...

I could possibly find a copy of the rules for Octarchs Chess, but that would give you only more opportunities to find faults with it.

Might be kinda hard to king the pieces, but a simpler game like checkers will probably work better.
