Title: Characters cant see *
Post by: Vakachehk on July 22, 2010, 02:01:43 am
Well today I was in Hydlaa Plaza, and a new character came on and started talking OOC in main, she then used a (: (emote) and someone told her that characters cant see emotes, at that same time another character misspelt a word saying Hell instead of Hello she then quickly said Hello*.

Well I am not picking holes in everyone but to be honest I think this is unfair. Why should a new player get told off for using an emote, but not someone using a *. Yes * means typo but that should not be done like that.

When this happens to me in main what I do is:/me covers his mouth while doing a large cough to clear his throat and says: "Sorry, I meant to say Hello."

To be honest I got this off a 10 year old player who use to be in my guild and once he misspelt Hydlaa in guild chat.

What do you think about it? post below.

You do. Still this is a game played by people, humans, typos happen, and thats it - sorry, you opened a thread for this, were you serious doing that?
That first one was OOC in main, using that smiley, the second one (which you didnt further elaborate) was IC committed a typo?

You seriously let OOC-mistakes (typo, bugged keyboard, whatever) influence your IC-game? I am sure you might want to think about it once more.

I wasn't "telling her off" about the emote that she displayed, I was telling her that she should separate IC from OOC using brackets. This is how the game works, and the new players need to learn this. I said these things in a calm manner, and not in a harsh manner. I didn't notice that somebody corrected a typo with or without brackets because I left that area shortly after.

Actually, the better way to go about the emote problem is to direct the new player to use descriptive actions:
"I'm sorry, but I don't understand your expression [use the /me command when you're doing actions, write it out]"

OOC can be a quick notifier to let a new player know that he/she has it wrong. Don't be afraid to use it when you need to. (As for typos, they happen, so what. As long as they use OOC to correct it, if they decide to correct it in that manner, that's their decision)

If you said it ICly you said it. Thats just the way it is. You cant go.

So I do pick holes when I say I am not picking holes... Ummmmmm? Im sorry can you rephrase that I think you did a typo :P

@ Geoni It wasn't just you who said to stop the non bracket OOCness.

And thanks for the backup Trikitiger, I just wanted to see what people think about correcting there typos and how they would do it, whether they think originally or have some ideas on how to change it. Whether the ideas are IC or OOC.

Well I told this player over tells that she should come to the forums and post the technical troubles she was being OOC about in the main. I just hope she finds this place, and that if she does she can learn about roleplay basics through some of the guides provided in the newbie area. About the /me thing, I forgot to add that she should say "/me smiles" instead of saying ":)" in main, but I thought that this player could expand upon "characters can't see" to know that the characters don't know what emotes are, and that they don't see them, and that they also don't know what windows or linux is. I guessed that she needed to cool down and resolve the technical problems she was having before she would be open ears about learning the difference between IC and OOC.

no one says hell instead of hello. it's clearly ooc and the * shows that. emotes are totally different.

For once I agree completely with Sarras. RPing obvious mistakes can cause all sorts of RP muck that should be left OOC. RPing typos is like RPing graphics bugs... it would look silly. And there is no rule that what is said out in main is set in stone, otherwise we'd have people with smiling faces flying out of their mouths. :P

Hell Sarras.
Hello Sarras.
it is very possible when you see someone.

Its not about how its an OOC mistake blah blah blah it is simply different ways of editing your mistake ICly.
and how on earth is /me covers his mouth while he coughs to clear his throat, and he then says: "Sorry I meant to say, Hello" going to lead to RP muck? and its fun to RP graphic bugs! :P

Maybe it would be wise for me to introduce a speech impediment for my character. Game lag makes me constantly type a "Helo" instead of a "Hello" even though the "l" key was hit twice. That often happens to me with double  "e"'s as well. Considering multiple races are chatting between each other in some common tongue it would not surprise me that the typos are in fact accents or simply the mispronouncing of a word which is not that of their mother tongue. It happens all the time in real life.... why the heck not in game?

Another word that often gets messed up on me is "here" which often comes out as "heer" for some reason when in lag. That typo has seriously been considered to make it my character's pronouncing of "here". If the player in question was having technical problems you can very likely consider they were lagging too.

Then there are the dwarfs speaking with what one must consider to be a dwarfish accent... or maybe they are just typos and they should be chastised for it instead of enjoyed?

If the player tries, at least, to correct a typo it seems way over the top to call folks out for them; considering my character can hardly walk, let alone talk, in the Den at any time or in StoneHead when full. Would you rather those interested in RP stay out of the game until they can buy a new machine? That would bring a whole new dimension to the elitist term being thrown around the forum threads these days.

Ever tried to say you got some gray matter? Perhaps it does work?

Just make a rule banning spelling mistakes in chat, that would be the normal procedure around here.

totally agreed with Sarras on this one... if you make a typo, you do it as *player*, not as character, hence it's OOC and should be corrected OOCly if it isn't obvious imo, at least you shouldn't expect others to RP their typos, that sounds really odd ;)

Please don't make me RP my typoes. Since I also "typoe" my shortcuts, Minks would have to develop Tourette's...

Vakachehk ... be careful not to be blamed as "roleplaying nazi". ;)

Tolerance.

It is hard to type without mistakes. As it is hard to speak without slurring, even if you try to pronounce clearly.

You should be happy about those who even care about fixing typos to help you understanding what they mean.

It is a sign of caring for the other players. \\o//

This belongs in the category of: "The most idiotic arguments that happen on the PS forums".

I can see where this argument is going if it doesn't stop. It has already gone off topic and reached accusations by people who weren't even in the situation, being that the people who were in the situation was the original complaint this thread was against which was irrelevant anyways. I'm not going to say anything else since it would be a waste of my very free time.

I consider the *correction syntax to be OOC without need for any additional syntax.  Sound like a solution?

Id say your the most idiotic person on PS forums :P

Phage, stop the flaming! I was using a simple example and added in the whole emotes thing, this should not of turned into an argument but a "General Discussion" if I was picking holes in people I'd have this under "Complaints Department" so grow the ferk up... thanks.

[Off topic: I am very disappointed in most of the people who commented under this thread. It was a simple discussion, and people just seem to have to flame and throw little fits over it. I am no longer commenting in this thread as of what Geoni said it is off topic, and is gone into an idiotic argument. Simple solution since this has turned into more of a complaint than a discussion, a spell checker. using red underlining or whatever. Thanks for the mature posts I have read.]

You go on thinking that I'm the most idiotic person on the PS forums, it gives me giggles  ::). Phage isn't flaming. He is simply pointing out how this entire topic is but a hyperbole complaint. Yes, it does deserve to be in the complaint department but as it is in general discussion, I can discuss how people make mistakes, and if they feel like it they can fix the typo using brackets. Many players do that so be tolerant of this. All they are trying to do is fix a mistake they made as their player that caused a different meaning in what their character said.
