Title: Look at me I am Drunk
Post by: kyp14 on May 16, 2003, 11:34:32 pm
Seeing there are mugs of beer in the game I think if you drink to many you should get drunk your vision could kinda warp and look wierd and your character would start swaying drunkenly and when you walk your character stumbles around and everyone could see it

Not only that (but if you\'ve played \"Redneck Rampage\") being drunk would also swap your keys. So you try to go forward and you strafe left. Stuff like that.

I think if you were drunk it should affect your fighting so your accuracy goes down but when your drunk you can also get agitated so your attack tempo goes up I think.

And it would also lower the hurt of somebody else\'s hit.

lol all cool ideas
ok so you dont get hurt
but you cant hit shit
you cant walk straight or see properly

sound like a normall weekend out :D

You\'d still get hurt, but the alchohol slows your system down, so the wounds would bleed slower.

just another idea for drunkness that when you type messages your words are scrambled a tiny bit not so much that you can\'t here them but so it gives the the people reading the impression hes drunk eg

You want to fight me = ya wanna ......... fights me\'s

And then you get to bore everyone in shouts and OOC by shouting \"LUK ART MUH EM DRUKK!\"

As a result the rest of us shut shouts and ooc off because you\'re annoying.

Games have had this feature and it honestly added nothing to the game.  What is the point of being drunk?  Supposedly it gave you strength modifiers, but it also lowered your wisdom, so in theory it was really good in a fight.  In reality, it just annoyed people.

Maybe that\'s true yes. But i still think, as Planeshift tries to create a world that is very realistic, it could add to realism, no ? However, than we should come up with a decent plan:
:: What alcohol actually does to you (how it affects your abilities, and how much)
:: How long being drunk lasts
:: How it affects your movements
:: How we could make this system less annoying for other people (IF that is possible at all, i don\'t know, i\'ve never played a game where you could get drunk ^_^)

We should be quite specific on this, so that after a while we have a nicely worked out idea of what being drunk will be lke in PS.

Yes, well rape is realistic.  Going to the loo is realistic.  Vomiting after getting drunk is realistic, but do we really NEED it in a game?  Does it actually add anything?

From what I\'ve seen of getting drunk in games, it doesn\'t do much but get on people\'s nerves and result in folks having to leave their characters logged in for a bit until they sober up.  You can\'t fight while drunk, because you can\'t move and can\'t see.  You could build up your alcohol tolerance, but again, there wasn\'t really much point because there was a fine line between being drunk enough to fight and being too plastered to do anything, and that is NOT the sort of thing to experiment with while camping a mob.

I\'ve seen it done and quite honestly just found it to be \"fluff\".  It\'s cool for about ten minutes when you shout like every person before you \"OOoooo IMR DRUKK\"  But then you learn to immediately put a person on ignore after that... :P

characters like Mehallie said could biuld up tolerance which would allow them to gain from a magically enhanced alcahol doing more good then bad.

A NPC may not reveal a some infomation because he is stubborn but take him for a drink get him drunk and he will be more then happy to tell you what you want see getting drunk or other people drunk isn\'t that bad.

another thing would be a drinking contest if your character has biult up a good tolerance for a bit of fun in the bar or to win money you could verse players or NPC\'s

(Mehallie no offensive or nothing but when people come up with ideas in the wishlist section you do nothing but tell us our ideas are a load of rubbish if you were on the dev team and you were the one that checked this section I honstly think no ideas would go through except for one or two.
Your always looking on the bad side maybe instead on telling us all the bad points of our ideas you can instead tell us how to improve them. :D )
Title:
Post by: Mehallie on May 17, 2003, 01:22:49 pm
No offence, but I\'ve seen this done and it WAS rubbish.  A good portion of ideas that I\'ve seen brought up are things that have been done in other games that haven\'t worked.  Maybe this should be taken into account not as naysaying but as the simple fact that it has been done and it hasn\'t worked.  As the developers have already said, there\'s maybe only a few ideas on the wishlist worth doing - the rest aren\'t worth their time.

So I guess I\'ll do what they do from now on - ignore silly ideas and only concentrate on ones that are worth some input :D

well I like this idea and I think it could be done right and serve some puposes Eg getting NPCs drunk to get info of them + having drinking contests to both win money and just have fun

What is the point in playing dwarf if you can\'t become drunk? :D

Lol i like this idea a lot, and i wish the devs could implement that... Would be really funny  :D

Btw i also like the \"strafe\" idea, bugging your direction commands.

Planeshift : \"A Tavern is not enough...\"

Planeshift: \" A billion pints is not enough\"  :P

I like the idea of alchohol poisioning. So if you were an assasin, you could get your npc hit UBER drunk, and eventually he\'d pass out and die. And it would look like natural causes  8o

No one forces you (you little player) to make your character drink. And while your character drinks you little player don\'t get drunk. So if your character gets drunk, it is only because you player WANTED him to get drunk.

Thus, you would NEVER get drunk by accident (or those accidents would be treated similarely to poisonning).

Then,
- making your character pronounce \"ya wanna ..... fights me\'s\" when you player type down \"You want to fight me\"
- changing your keys
- making you automatically strafe
- reducing your visibility
and all that you talked about would only be fun for 10 minutes the first time, everyone would get drunk one \"just to see what it would do\", but do you REALY think players would want their character to get drunk all the time, if there are only disadvantages to getting drunk ?

Furthermore, with a coded system, everyone would get drunk the same way, and this is totally opposite to a drunk attitude : some are happy and keep on singing, some get depressed, others want to fight against everyone... And all those depend on EMOTIONS that no AI can simulate. Coding a drunk attitude would erase all those nuances that make your character human, because unique.

And if you REALLY wants to play a drunk character, you can strife on your own, you player, or make your character speak as if he was drunk.

Maybe you can even try to boost your typing skills with a few whiskys in real life... :D

there arn\'t to many addvantages to being drunk thynett but that doesn\'t mean it doesn\'t have a purpose taking a NPC to the the bar and getting him drunk to reveal info is a good one as well as for a little fun in the bar challenging other people in the bar to a drinking challenge for money or just fun first one to either woss out or fall alsleep from being drunk looses + why have a beer mug if you can\'t get drunk this would make the mug a rather pointless addition.

I didn\'t say \"alcoohl is a bad idea\" I just said
- making your character pronounce \"ya wanna ..... fights me\'s\" when you player type down \"You want to fight me\"
- changing your keys
- making you automatically strafe
- reducing your visibility
are bad ideas, since they wouldn\'t bring mch but would need lots to develop.

Now making a NPC drink to get info can be interrestong, but this is closer from poisonning and wasn\'t the topic of my post.

a little fun in the bar challenging other people in the bar to a drinking challenge for money

How do you want to calculate alcoohl resistance of a character ? Excpet with stats and skills ? I don\'t see any. The n you would see \"high lvls\" that keep drinking to train their \"alcohool resistance\" skill... Wouldn\'t that be ridiculous ? And would those challenges really be interresting when they are nothing but another way to compare stats ?

Quote
fall alsleep from being drunk looses

tou say :
\"/lay
Beaaaaaa feeling ban
/me bangs his head on the floor and falls asleep\"
Wow ! I\'ve done what you said without programming anything ! :D

why have a beer mug if you can\'t get drunk this would make the mug a rather pointless addition.

Because if you hve nothing to drink it would be rather pointless to go to a bar, then bars would become pointless, then everything in town except NPC merchants and quest givers would be pointless, then all that we would have is a soulless game ;) We need some material support to imagination, you don\'t need much, but \"useless\" items can be great sources of RP. I\'ll propably look like an extra-terrestrial, but you can talk for hours (of course if you\'re talking to the right person :p) by only finding some unusual item on the floor ! Just wonder \"how come this mug came hre in the middle of nowhere ?\" And with some imaginative characters you\'ll build an incredible story... But maybe I\'m the only one interrested in those wasting time role playing activities ^^

No Thynett, your not the only one, but my experiences so far are that if you start playing drunken everybody is confused. Of course it is no problem to act drunken. No need to code anything for that, but i hope that this is possible in the Planeshift world. We need the right players for this, not the right engine. That is real rolyplaying in my eyes, not those fights against mythical monsters...

sorry but i dont see what being drunk will ad to the game and the role playing experience
Title:
Post by: kyp14 on May 23, 2003, 09:21:13 am
well we just had a huge discussion on it PartyBoy and I can not see somone roleplaying they\'re drunk you would have to pretend you look drunk by walking around like an idiot which kinder defies the point of being drunk because its yours inability to walk propably not becasue you want to.

Pros of being or getting somone else drunk:
- extracting infomation of NPC\'s
- adds to atmosphere
- Adds more quest options eg NPC wont do what you want him to because your being a party pooper and  won\'t come and join his party and have fun (get drunk).
- Is quiet amusing the first few times you see it
- where is the fun in being a dwarf if you can\'t get drunk
- every little detail counts

Cons of being or getting somone drunk:
- doesn\'t ad that much to the game
- may get boring quickly for some players

well I out weighed the bad points to the good points and got more good then bad although if some of you people who down right hate this idea can post more I don\'t know why you would bother because if this was implemented which may or may not happen (most likely leaning to the no considering very little of the ideas in this section including good ones get in) the simple fact is if you don\'t want to get drunk you don\'t get drunk same as real life (I would never in my life be forced into drinking cause in real life I\'m a tad scared of the side effects eg hang over which wouldn\'t be apparent in the game) so if this did get into the game and you don\'t like the idea the solution is don\'t drink and if there is a drunnk person who is annoying ignore him its not hard

There is a possibility that this will be added just for fun?but it won?t do much for you?just be fun and annoying.
Then again a lot can be added, but I don?t see a real cool addition alcoholism could bring to our world
Title:
Post by: kyp14 on May 23, 2003, 09:43:20 am
would you be able to implement the getting NPC\'s drunk for info etc or would it just be cool and annoying like it was in dues ex 1 I don\'t care that much either way but i would like to see it but if it doesn\'t get in well  shrugs i\'ll get over it within a second
Title:
Post by: paxx on May 23, 2003, 09:47:59 am
If a possible quest step includes making the NPC like you and getting him drunk is one of those ways?I see no problem with it?as far as on PCs it is not really possible.

Also it could be that an NPC want you to be as drunk as he is?and may laugh at you if you are drunk after only one beer?but I am really not sure how far this will go, only that drinking might be a way to gain a temporary faction bonus.

Not a bad idea

Classically in the RPG genre, ales and wines of specific types can be puchased according to their described benefits and effects.

For example a draught of constitution, a healing ale. All priced according to their quality. This is tried, proven, and adds to the game nicely. With the beverage list you can ask for from the barmaid at Kada\'s inn atm, it seems this is the direction the devs are taking.

It\'s a good idea to have players drinking all the time; upping their ability to benefit from beer then thwopping a foe after a few drinks. However as has been said, what stat is this that one will be increasing? And then what is to stop a player from simply spending a few trias on a strength-increasing brew and acheiving the same effect as these beer-hardened avatars in an instant  8o  !?

From a quick glance at the posts =) most say it being drunk doesn?t add anything...

But think of a real life situation: someone drinks alcohol, but not too much (sth. like a meter with halfway just right *g und full you?re knocked out for the next hours):
it first makes you go fearless, then wild, rampage, the aggressive and then a useless piece of junk lying in the gutter :)

k, but first mitha moderate level: the person could have a short increase in courage, determination, stamina and strength, just like a short boost, with a decrease in accuracy, speed or sth. at the same time.... (should give you a light advantage when properly used and trained)

This way, it?s not only drinking because of your thirst or because you like making yourself ridiculous...
you also could drink sth. heavy just prior to a big battle, or a melee minigame, or a (PVP inside arena both agreed  or whatever it will be) 2 or more player battle.....

Well actually the idea of being drunk in a fantasyworld doesn\'t sounds too cool.

Wouln\'t it be better if it was something else,, like a special mushroom that is used in magic and when you use it on yourself you get dizzy?

I say if its realist and does not seriously attack someones religion (rape, torture, too much blood and violence) then let it in the game. If its annoying just give the person the ability to shut it off. Say if someone gets drunk and sounds anooying, give the player a filter section where he can hit a check button to no longer hear drunk people. Now he can hear someone that was drunk at one time without having to unmute them or whatever the system is.

if a drunk effect makes it into PS, you can use it also for some other poisinings, and even spells or attacks.
For exmaple ther could be a spell named \"melt brain\". If cast on player he expieriences a strong drunk effect.

I drink...
tea and lots of it

I like to sit and watch as the tea steeps, swirls of red in the water like blood syphoning off the body...

[/morbid streak]

anyway, yeah, drinking could be fun, but there\'s lots of other things the devs could be concentrating on

wow somone actually went to the trouble of reviving this thread I feel speacil

drunkeness shouldn\'t be magor on the devs list but I would like to see it in the final version whatever form its in
