I'm using simplyMEPIS 8.5 and I've already tried a couple openal fixes to clear up

Have to tried to start the game with  ./psclient  ? I also crash when I use ./pslaunch.
But I can use ./pslaunch --console for updates. But when I want to start the game,
I start it directly via psclient. Maybe that helps with your problem too

I fixed it! I just installed pulseaudio and fully configured that, seems to have done the trick.
