Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) Quad-Core 2.2 GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
System Memory: 3 GB
Video Memory: 1 GB
I downloaded the game and (I imagine that) run the updater. I could not find the PlaneShift Updater shortcut or executable, but I hit the Repair button and it downloaded a lot of stuff, until it said the system was up to date.
Without changing any settings, I run the game and was able to log in.
The music seemed to be playing normal.
In character creation screen, when I chose a race (any race, any gender), no character model appears and I can't see what is the outcome of the characteristics that I have chosen.
I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the game and did everything again, so I have no idea what the problem could be.
These are the contents of the errorlog.txt file:

As I said, I have no idea what it could be. And also I don't know why the error log says it could not load sound, as the music was playing.
Any help?

The "updater" is included in the PS Launcher.
Which version does the client show in its window header? (Should be 0.5.4)
Which is your last version entry in updaterinfo.xml? (Should be 0.5.4.10)
Might be useful to go through the options pages of pslaunch once, set OpenAL sound and your preferred level of texture and shader quality. But invisible avatars on the podium are probably a different issue.
Your hardware should be able to work easily with "High" and "Highest" graphic options. Still, for testing, you may decide to set everything to "medium" (where possible) and try again.
Most of those error messages you reported are "normal" (for a "game in development") and not causing real problems.
-
As I said, I could not find something with the name "updater", but the repair seemed to update it.
These are the version information:
psclient.exe: 0.5.4.0
pslaunch.exe: 0.5.4.0
updaterinfo.xml: 0.5.4.10
As I said, the sound was working fine and it is configured to OpenAl. I just thought that error message was strange. But if it's normal...
One thing that I found realy strange was the fact that the sound was working, but in the settings the "Enable Sound" is not checked. Odd.
The settings were configured to "Medium", but I also set up the texture quality to medium, but still, no character model.
-
did you manually edit your configuration files?
I could only reproduce by changing the rendermanager from unshadowed to shadow_pssm which isn't possible via the launcher
-
I am not sure if it is related, but in the german (psde.de) board we just have an entry that someone crashes as soon as she selects any race. To be investigated, we'll try to get her into a chat later.

I haven't touched any file. Now that you said it, I see that unshadowed was configured. But I tried both and none of them worked.

Well, the game doesn't crash, I just can't see any character model in the screen.

what graphics driver are you using? it's possible your using a old buggy driver or the opengl part of it is somehow broken
-
It's NVIDIA driver.
Executable name: 258.96_desktop_winxp_32bit_international_whql.exe
This is the information I get from SIW:
driver version: 6.14.12.5896
driver date: 2010-07-09 22:38:00
DirectX
driver name: nv4_disp.dll
driver description: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250
-
hm same as the one i use then, it's possible the opengl driver is broken and this game uses opengl not directx.
at this time i can only give ideas like remove the driver and run driver sweeper from guru3d.com and reinstall.
if vertex buffer objects is turned on in setup try and turn it off or vice versa and see what happens
-
I have just installed the drivers.
I tried with and without VBO, but with no results.
-
installed yes but if you have had older drivers in did you remove them first or install ontop of the old one?
-
I have unistalled the old driver, removed the files that were left and run registry cleanning programs before installing the new driver.
-
i'm starting to find this odd to say the least, you have a far beter pc than me yet the same windows as me.
hm maybe we should start with how it looks, mind taking a screenshot and uploading it somewhere?
-
This is a screenshot from the character creation screen:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3654/screenshoteov.jpg (http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/3654/screenshoteov.jpg)
I don't know if it makes any difference, by I installed the game in a different path:
E:\Jogos\PlaneShift
EDIT:
I managed to install the game in another computer and could create the character, but at the final stage (when you get into the game, I supose), the game crashed. So I came back to the main computer and selected the character to enter the game. Now, some strange things appear:
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/1109/imagemcmv.png (http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/1109/imagemcmv.png)
Every message that appears, gets drawn repeated, descending and fading. As this is an animation, I supose the buffer is not being cleared.
EDIT 2:
Also, now in the errorlog.txt file, there are lots of this message:
Mon Aug 30 19:02:31 2010, <..\..\src\client\psclientdr.cpp:223 psClientDR::HandleDeadReckon SEVERE>
Mon Aug 30 19:02:31 2010, Got DR message for unknown entity EID:81977.
with different EIDs.

either that game is really bugged or your driver is bugged to hell, weird though, i use the same driver and it works fine but with a much older card
eh just a thought, you haven't by any chance installed the 64bit version?
just tried to start up that exe and it actually started on my 32bit ver of xp pro
-
I installed the 32bit, as it is my OS.
The executable name is "258.96_desktop_winxp_32bit_international_whql.exe".
I had to change the driver because I was having 20fps in Resident Evil 5. Now it runs normally at 60fps.
But I don't know if that makes any difference because the game uses OpenGL, not DirectX.
Either way, I imagine that the fact that it runs normally might mean that the driver is not buggy.
-
i didn't mean your driver was 64bit i meant the planeshift and it runs on opengl not dx
-
The current PlaneShift installer for Windows 32 bit should be:
- via BitTorrent: http://laanx.fragnetics.com/bt/PlaneShift-v0.5.4.exe.torrent
- via HTTP: A file "PlaneShift-v0.5.4.exe" from one of the mirrors on http://www.planeshift.it/download.html
-
i didn't mean your driver was 64bit i meant the planeshift and it runs on opengl not dx
I said that RE5 uses directX, so I didn't know if the fact that it runs normally would make any difference because planeshift uses opengl.
The executable name of the installer is "PlaneShift-v0.5.4.exe" and the md5 is b119c47c4161b76ccbade6fa4d9307fa, so I think this is the right one.

If you have not been contacted about it by a code developer yet, it should be useful to create a bug report in our bugtracker about it, and look for people like weltall and RlyDontKnow (PlaneShift developers) or jorrit (CrystalSpace 3D and PlaneShift developer) in IRC channels like #planeshift-build or #crystalspace on the FreeNode network.
