Title: Characters missing

I haven't played for a little over a year and finally managed to get the game working again, but both my characters are missing.  Now I have read a lot of mention about inactive characters being deleted, but the time period seems to be closer to three years?

Further more after checking my partners account I found that all his characters are still there and since we both stopped playing at the same time I found this a bit strange, thus the reason for this post.
Did he just get lucky in managing to keep his characters somehow or might there be another reason or something different I could try?
