Title: Tessra's Art Thread
Post by: Tessra on September 03, 2010, 05:46:44 am
Mk... So I couldn't sleep and decided to try and sketch at least one of my girls.  And since Tesh usually has a rather difficult to draw smirk on her face, I went with Tess instead. Yep, I know.. identical twins should look... well... identical... but one of them is more identical than the other!!

If you noticed the lack o' horns... that would be cause they are actually Ylian, and not Ynwnn.  This is how I see Tessra in my head, looking a bit unsure of herself, and rather shyly looking around.  [And I did use a reference for part of the position, just to be sure I got the arms in the right orientation.] Oh yeah... and I can't draw feet... so you can just pretend they are there.   :whistling:
/me slinks off into the darkness to figure out how to draw axes next.

Hehe, if you had me confuse  you with Teshia then you've done a good job at being an identical twin.

Great drawing by the way.

Wow that is a nice picture you drew, the only thing I draw is stuff for Art at school which is just things like textures, flowers, bugs dumb boring stuff. I should put a big Kore Enkidukai on my Art Board hehe.

They sooo are! Why would a male teenager want to draw a flower, or a bug?

I would much rather draw something much more artistic :)

Poor Roled and Erelenga... I'm sorry guys!  Shall I have her wear a cloak and cut off all her hair?  *giggles*

And not too much, Baldur.  I just doodle every now and then when I can't sleep or have some extra time.

Ok, so a few people asked me to draw Teshia, and it took me a while to do it. My webcam was not working well for taking pics, so sorry that they are a bit fuzzy.  But here's the crazy axe lady.

*Note: The scars are not as dark as I drew them in.  They are more like shadows on her skin, but you wouldn't be able to see them in a picture if I didn't darken them. And she would totally never run around in so little clothing, but you wouldn't be able to see the scars if she was in her usual armor.

Tried for a closer up of her face:

Those are strange kinds of scars. Rather from being struck by a lightning than from weapons or claws. I obviously don't know her history at all.
Title: Re: Tessra's Art Thread
Post by: Tessra on December 07, 2010, 02:39:26 am
Tesh's scars are a result of a spell-offering made to Dakkru before her marriage to Eelin.  She sliced through her hand, and dark magic wound along her body in a vine-like pattern.  As the vines darkened, they split through her skin, and made a blood offering.  They healed afterwards, leaving hairline scars along her body.  Under most lights, you probably wouldn't even notice them as anything more than a shadow.  I haven't decided though... after the klyros cooked her in her armor, and it had to be basically peeled off of her, that would have taken off the top layer of her skin. So, the scars should be gone now.  *thinkthinkthink*

after the klyros cooked her in her armor

:o YUCK!!!  :'(

You watched too many horror movies.  X-/

Reminds me on a children's fairytale book with such verbose descriptions of a punishment that it was obviously not suitable for pre-school audience...  :surrender:
Title: Re: Tessra's Art Thread
Post by: Tessra on December 07, 2010, 08:41:46 pm
Tesh has been married twice.  To Eelin, and then to Kull.  And well, it wasn't a true cooking, she jumped on the back of a klyros that was extremely skilled in Red Way magic. He caught his wings on fire, but instead of letting him go, she continued to try and stab him with her dagger, to hold him still so the others could continue attacking him.  She took some serious burn damage, and the armor burned into her skin.

Hmmm... okies, so I decided to try and actually draw a menki.  :whistling: I tried drawing Caraick in leather armor.. and realized I can't get a good idea of what the leathers look like on my low graphics setting, so I just made it up XD

That's actually a pretty solid male Enki, you've got a knack for anatomy I must say :)

Looks like he's crouching, was that part of the overall idea of how he should look? You need to train a bit more on thinner heads and smaller eyes I think, you're still going strong with the manga style but this is a great improvement nonetheless! Experiment some with longer necks, thinner heads and smaller eyes either in your mind or by drawing. I see you've done that, check out some humans on the net. This could help, I was once asked to sketch the statue of David(by Michelangelo) and it might help you get a varied understanding of the human body and help you when you draw different characters and body-types.

Have fun, Tessra :) The stage you're in right now was when I realized I could draw anything if I set my mind to it, and had great fun getting help from other people.

Also, as a side note, try to make your bodies less compact. Train on loosening the poses up, they seem a bit huddled up, and you'll have an alot easier time trying out all imaginable poses!

Looking forward to seeing your progress ^^

The style looks a bit different from previous ones (or may be it's the effect of the camera toning). Some decent scanners aren't expensive now btw. It's way better than using a camera.

Awwww  thanks guys.  And Trav, I knoooooow they aren't mammals, but even the concept art for the game has the female klyros with fleshy protuberances in the mammary region.  At least I left out the nipples :p

And I draw Marsu because he's one of my favorite characters in the game.

Mk... so Tesh is not really one for Balls, but she *is* one for trying to keep her menki happy, and she certainly loves to dance.  This is how I intend to have her dressed for the Masquerade Ball.

Here's an upclose shot:

And the full body shot:

I'm playing with a new sketchpad, and as usual, only have my iPhone or webcam to take the pics... Oh... and she does have a knife in there somewhere, but even I couldn't find room for an axe XD

Well daaaaaaannnngggg. I'm imagining a hoard of menki following her around.
Trailing a puddle of saliva.
This inspires me to try to draw Mariana in a dress she might wear...
But she might reduce my innards to molten liquid if I tried  ::)

I tried for like a half hour to rotate and it just wouldnt go! Ah well :D

Gorgeous! You just keep on improving more and more every time you post your work. I particularly like the eyes, lips, and stripes.

Rotating isn't hard with free software like GIMP - the Image menu has very easy to find rotation options. Pretty sure Paint.Net is just as good for it.

The Levels feature in most imaging software is also good for improving the look of your work once scanned (or photographed) - I'm not sure how to explain it here, but there are probably plenty of tutorials out there. It's an immense help.

Nice portrayal of Mari, Tess!

Here are 2 ways to rotate your pic. that come with Macs:
If you used a scanner, there's an option for rotation angle if you use ImageCapture.
If you already have a digital picture like from your cell that needs rotating, open with Preview and under tools heading choose rotate right or left.

Maybe you already know that and were just trying to get photobucket to do it instead.

If you ever want to play with digital painting with lifelike materials like watercolors, I highly recommend an inexpensive wacom pen tablet to start with and a program like ArtRage Studio, $30, has a free demo too, or the older ArtRage for $20 and made to be easily used with a pen tablet. I've seen wacom graphire tablets on ebay for around $40 and they work well or the newer bamboo and intuos ones are nice if you can spend more.

I have it rotated on my computer, but for some reason, photobucket kept un-rotating it.  I have no idea what was screwing it up last night, but no matter what i did, it would NOT register the rotated image, nor would it let me edit it on photobucket directly.  it was weird. i've never had that kind of trouble before.

if you edit a picture on a mac using iPhoto, it saves the edited version under a different directory, always keeping the original intact and safely tucked away. Maybe you uploaded the original version?

other than that, i can't help you with the photobucket side of things. I use picasa for my image hosting.

There are some tools which "losslessly rotate" a JPEG only logically, by storing EXIF data into the header, without actually reordering the image content. Web browsers will probably ignore that flag.

I've always had difficulties doing anything but very basic edits with iPhoto. If you plan on doing anything, get Photoshop and Illustrator.

there are major differences between a photo editor, photo manipulator, and a graphics program. I like iPhoto for doing simple things like adjusting contrast and color balance, cropping, rotating, etc. because it's simple to open and run on my mac. it's also a great tool for organizing photos.

illustrator, being a vector based program is great for creating graphics, such as my sig below, but for editing photographs (which are pixel based) it is not.

photoshop has features of all three types of software, I primarily use it if i'm in the mood for doing digital collages or heavy manipulation. also, i learned photography back in the good ol' days of kodachrome and darkrooms, and i like to treat photoshop as a digital darkroom of sorts.

then again, why am i telling you all this when i should be saying:

lovely portrait of mariana, tesh, regardless of how sideways it is.

You can use any image editor (or viewer with at least basic editing features) to resize an image to a given maximum of width or height. And with a web optimizing compression you can even make it "as good as it gets, but less than X KB". One possible free software for Windows would be IrfanView with its RIOT plugin (Save for the web; Compress to size); XnView has some similar feature (at least you can move the quality slider up to the size threshold). It is recommendable to use the "Progressive" format for JPEGs, if available.

Commission for Mariana, character Teeleh.  All this talk of shading made me get the itch to go back to my preferred style.  I tend to try for realistic with my humanoid characters for PS, but my favorite style to draw in has always been manga/anime-esque.  Hope you like it, Mari.

Thank you very much for the compliment.  You're an incredible artist, and knowing that someone as talented as yourself (and the other wonderful artists here) likes what I have done really means a lot.  Art isn't something that comes naturally to me, and even the simplest of sketches I post usually has 3+ hours behind it.  I suppose that's why I'm incredibly self-conscious about them.  Case in point, I've had a deviantART account for more than five years, and only just posted the first things to it this week.  Ok, I'll stop rambling now, and simply say: Thank you.

This looks better than ever. As LigH pointed out, it would be great to see captures of higher quality, such as a scan. The progress pictures are also interesting, one could turn them into an animated gif. But that's technical stuff, what matters here is your art  :woot:
EDIT:
Personally, I find it difficult to draw hands. And the proportions of her hand in that picture catch my attention. I checked the char description for a clue about this. It is probably a flaw from the method of capturing the image.

Around here at least, OfficeMax will scan stuff and either stick it on a thumb drive or email it to you. Its fairly cheap and convenient - especially for large drawings that won't fit in a cheap scanner.

If anyone happens to ever see Morghain around, I had asked her if she would let me sketch her character, but I never could get her desc... so if anyone happens to see her, or knows how to get her desc, I'd totally be indebted forevah!

That is absolutely GORGEOUS detail. It is obvious to me you spend quality time on your work. Amazing.

And welcome to indebtment forever, 'cause :D
I'm pretty sure it's on myplane..

aaand...

yep, here it is:

Quote
A Nolthrir woman, seems a few cycles less than 80, probably - nearing her middle ages for an elfess. She is slim and curvy in shape, although not lacking for tone in well-used muscle. Her voice is soft and husky, although a bit of sarcasm drips naturally into it.

[She has a bruise on the side by her right ear, a small one, but seems new.]

Her hair is long and green, with shimmers of an ocean blue to it. It's naturally wavy, but styled into a neat, pretty hairstyle by way of a few thin needle-like objects stuck into it. There are a few small braids on the sides of her head, with bangles in them.

Her face has a highbreed look to it, and very elven. Her eyes are a deep emerald green, set underneath thin brows, with a petite, although a bit slanted nose between. Her cheekbones are high and pretty, and her mouth is a full cupid's bow, with a hint of a glimmering pink blush applied to the lips in a manner-of-fact, yet appealing, way. Her jaw is slim and angled as well, set on a slender, feminine neck.

Her shoulders are slim, but firm, tapering off into willowy arms. Her body is obviously feminine, but she works at hiding it with casual, everyday wear. Her shirt is a simple short sleeved green blouse, with a white undershirt beneath it. This is tucked into a combination of a leather belt which is wrapped around her tight fitting leather pantaloons, obviously flaunting her posterior. Her hands are calloused and worn, wrist muscles denoting practice at her chosen skills. Judging by the tone of her legs and the grace by which she walks, she's light and swift. Her feet are equally calloused, though, nolthririan skin toughened by both lack of water and excercise.

She has a dagger on the inside of each thigh, and the needle-like objects in her hair upon closer inspection are revealed to be stiletto daggers, carefully sharpened to lethal points.

OOC Description

[Morghain is the way she is for a reason! /Tell me if she offends or bothers you, and we'll work it out. I only RP duel, not PvP, so don't assume my character's strengths and weaknesses in the initial comb-over, please.]

[The ridiculously long descriptionairy
parts:

-Morghain's skills: Incredibly skilled dagger and small knife thrower, has pinpoint accuracy from several meters away. Cannot throw it as far as some due to limited strength though. Also skilled at hand-to-hand combat, dagger combat, and has a resistance to Azure Way attacks.

-Morghain's bearing: She is confident, yet has an unassuming air of humility to her. She walks with a saunter of knowing who she is and why she does what she does, and her husky voice is almost always cool and collected.

-When swimming or taking off her outer clothing, there is a flowing, lacey blue shift made of fine material underneath, with thin straps that loop over her shoulders to hold it up. It barely goes past her thighs, but is a solid blue color.

-Morghain's braids: They are a three-weave style, made up of barely any hair at all. They are delicate and about half a pinky's width around, with the golden "S" beads woven into the bottom area.

-Morghain's weaponry: In her hair is the needle-blade, in semblance of a bobby-pin type hair holder. In the shoe is the dagger, and the hilt is wrapped in hide hair, giving it a tough, nonslip handle. Both blades are straight and aerodynamic, with a full tang and weighted hilt.

-Morghain's makeup: The eyes of the Nolthrir girl are slightly shaded a smoky black, accentuating the blueness of the almond-oriental peepers. Her lashes are thick and luscious, aided by some of Yliakum's blacker pastes, carefully applied by hide-hair applicators. Her full, cupid's-bow shaped lips are painted a delicate, rosy pink with lip paint, and her cheeks are given a semblance of natural Nolthririan flush by powdered florals. The look is in whole well-done and to most would seem professional and well-kept for an elven girl.

Tesh, I think this may be my favorite rendition of Teshia to date.  :)

I like this one a lot Tess and agree with Caraick. Since we're naming favorite body parts, I think the lips came off nice.  :-*
I'd like to see the scars done more subtly and realistically, or at least in a much lighter hue as they strike me more as tattoos now. I also think if that was done, it would give her a more mysterious quality revealing someone who's looking good despite obvious flaws.

   I'm ankle-deep in Morghain's hair at the moment.  I've decided I am going to learn how to sketch hair if it keels me.

Thanks menki :D  I've been trying to get a good image of her in my head, and while I'm not finished messing with her, I'm glad you like her.

Dannae.. I always look forwards to your comments.  I love seeing what you have to say and you're so crazy-frickin-talented that it makes me all warm and fuzzy when you like my sketches. I looked at a gazillion scar pictures, and tried to find any step-by-step things, since I've never quite been happy with them.  Any ideas on how I can make them lighter, but still realistic?

OMG... It took me forever to scratch out some hair for this girl! I've got another one in mind that actually uses the braids, but I was a bit scared that I wouldn't be able to draw them, so I... tried this instead. >.<

Possibly quite big eyes, somehow, but ...

Indeed, very elaborate hair. Now you can imagine Albrecht Dürer painting his "Young Hare"...

Gorgeous with the hair! I simply don't have the patience, personally, to take that much time to shade all the strands. The eyes, I agree, are slightly large, but then again that might be true to nolthrir...I dunno, I suppose I imagine since they spend a lot of their lives underwater (in theory) their eyes might be slightly larger in order to see clearly in murkier water.

A little suggestion: You could possibly try to work out the gloss in her hair "bundles/wisps/streaks" (what would it be called?); examples: A (http://static.cosmoty.de/images/magazin/haar-glaenzend-1.jpg), B (http://www.livingathome.de/images/fotostrecken/wellness/honig/haareglanz.jpg)

It was a while ago now, but thought I'd give a try at one of those scars on Tesh to maybe better explain what I meant with that earlier critique how I thought they looked more like tattoos because of being too dark and uniform. I think all it takes is a little drawing with an eraser after laying in the darker overall shape adding some highlights and lights/darks along each edge of the scar to suggest where it might stick out or sink into the surrounding skin. Here's a link of my attempt since you asked for suggestions and I don't want to post art in your thread: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EtVjGhVb7WO7LIpyfkzO19MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EtVjGhVb7WO7LIpyfkzO19MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink)

Have to say you make me all warm and fuzzy too reading your return compliments. Gives me something to try and live up to.   X-/

Looks like the last drawing you posted of Morghain took a lot of time and determination. Even though you feel the hair isn't as symmetrical as you'd like, it doesn't bother me at all. Maybe just a few swoops of a big eraser across the hair would add shine like LigH suggests. If you try, don't overdo it though. Only a few places would be enough if that was a look you wanted to go for.

Ahh, umm.

I know years is a bad time to bump things. But Tesh, you're just too good to let rest.

Can I make a request?
