Title: Weather
Post by: PartyBoy on May 20, 2003, 06:41:59 am
It rains way to much it rains like everyday why are we not all flooded,
why not add a season system in
when its summer its lovely ,
when its spring flowers bloom,
when its autum leaves turn brown and fall off,
and in the winter it snows ,
that would be nice.

I DONT LIKE THE RAIN IT RAINS TO MUCH

The weather system WILL need some improvements - but I think it is not a priority now. Although, even in an unfinished game, eye-candy may come useful, to \"draw players\' attention away\" a bit from the other serious lacks.

Moving clouds would look fascinating (see newsky.zip in Crystal Space - it is possible) - if there are even clouds underground...

And in the future, the player should see when a storm is coming: dark clouds gathering, first thunder and lightning, only THEN should the raining begin.

Just a thought.

There are clouds unterground if the space is big enough, which it definitly is. I heared from a science building (somewhere in America i think) which is few kilometers high and there are clouds ...

Planeshift world has water, space so the circulation of the water should be possible, from a physical point of view.

Then the clouds should be made, as they are possible to do with Crystal Space (the renderer behind PS).
See this: http://crystal.sourceforge.net/drupal/scrshots/newsky.jpg

For more screens of PS, and Crystal Space in general, see: http://crystal.sf.net

maybe there could be a spell that stops rain for a while ?

A spell that stops rain ? that would be quite awkward. How do you see this logan ? could you explain your idea a little ?

I like the idea of the weather changing by season, but i don\'t know how you are going to implement snow. Snow has to fall, and stay where it is. How can you program the snow to keep there and just lie around, being white ? Seems like hell to code to me...

i hate to be the one to tell you, but weather already has a thread

The snow would be no hell to code i think, but a hell for your RAM and your graphic card ...

Hehe, and I got the coding bit all wrong AGAIN. Nevermind. If it decreases your performance as drastically as you imply beza1e1, maybe we should think twice about implementing it in the game, because it doesn\'t seem very logical to me to be able to switch this option on/off. This doesn\'t seem logical, because it affects the entire PS world, and not just your pc...

The reason it rains so much is to show people that it CAN rain, and how good it is. I dont know if clouds would work too well, I know ran can be caused by the condensation, but clouds?

If you read the official planeshift site thoroughly you will see that the water works system as well as seasonal cycles and other environment effects to be are described in detail by the devs.

hmmm... considering your name, wouldn\'t it be nicer to have a spell that makes it rain, instead of stopping it?? :D
Title: my thoughts on the weather
Post by: frumbert on December 07, 2003, 04:03:15 am
I know the weather system is a \"low priority\" feature, but it is cool. Here\'s my rather detailed, developer oriented ideas on weather features:

-----------

We all know it rains too much. Rain could vary its intensity each time it rains. An easy way to impliment this is to vary the size of the drops, so that \"light\" rain simply means tiny droplets, and \"heavy\" rain means big fat droplets. The system for doing the rain would simply alter the size of the drops.

Also when you look up and down, the engine should alter the size of the rain \"drop\" texture so that you don\'t see long \"streaks\" as you look up or down.

Lightning should arc across the sky in severe weather. Currently the lightning causes a flash but there\'s no \"bolt\".

Water should spash as it hits the ground. Simulate this by adding random grey/white particles on the ground while it\'s raining.

You could simulate pooling water by making zones in the world file around the edges of objects - buildings, paths, and grass. Then slowly grow a water texture on the zone when it\'s raining, and fade it away after it stops raining.

Rain should change intensity as it stops and starts, so that it fades in and fades out, rather than just happening all of a sudden.

You should get cricket / bird chirping sounds after it finishes raining (or they should get louder for a while).

You could flare the sky sometimes to indicate shards or planes within the crystal.

Trees/banners should sway sometimes to indicate a breeze. Louded swoosh sounds and faster swaying indicate a harder breeze.

You could have a mist or fog in *some* dungeons. This would help people navigate because they could remember the \"misty\" room or whatever.. Dev\'s could implement a see-through \"cloud\" sprite layer about knee-height in a room, indicating a ground-hugging mist, or a fog-zone.

weather is a 2nd priority right now i mean who would rather have a nice cloud going over in the sky or being able to have combat and a spell system??

Yeah but the thought of having other weather than rain or no rain in the world sounds nice.

yea then maybe during the different seasons differnt monsters and plants will appear.

These are all excellent ideas for version 9.6, expected in about 2018...  ;-)

I don\'t know if this is possible but, maybe the weather could hurt you in some way, like once in a blue moon have a random character get hit by lightning, maybe this could unlock secret abilities as well?
