Is there another free site that gives me IRC. I seem to think  http://webchat.freenode.net/  is down?

Yeah, lots of sites aren't working for me right now. Only Facebook and Hydlaa Plaza. Proboards were working but aren't now and Google stopped working.

You could as well use a dedicated IRC client instead of a web service.

There are even web browsers with integrated IRC clients (Seamonkey; Opera; ...).

Sometimes it happens that your ISP has issues with DNS or routing. Then you don't have access to the domain name resolution or to specific areas of the internet.

The page works, they was probably implementing the captcha feature against bots.

Yeah I have tried the IRC clients that PlaneShift offers on their main page, but they make you pay to use it :(

So yeah all I know is IceChat but that seems strange to use.

SeaMonkey (or the ChatZilla plugin for Firefox) and Opera browser suites are free. Miranda IM too.
