Title: missing spell book buttons
Post by: Gillis Norone on April 20, 2011, 10:16:18 pm
Hi everyone

I just started in Planeshift yesterday and I already encountered a prob in the tutorial. I don't have any buttons to click in the Spell Book. I just see the labels at the top and a small square window right of the labels. How do I post a screenshot?

I tried relogging. I tried updating. (I'm not sure though if this updater ever did anything.  ??? ) And I searched the forum and read all sorts of stuff. Still I didn't find anything.

So who can help?

I'm Gillis Norone on the Ezpcusa Server. I play PS 0.5.6 on a MacBook running OSX 10.6 with an Intel Core 2GH and 1GB RAM.

Thanks.

How do I post a screenshot?

a) Simple: Enter the command /screenshot; upload this resulting JPG to a free image hoster in the internet (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=39304.0).

b) Advanced: Enter the command /screenshot lossless; edit the resulting PNG, crop the interesting area out, save it as web optimized JPG - then upload that.

Where to find the screenshots: Read here (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=34721.0) or here (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=31967.0).

I play PS 0.5.6 on a MacBook running OSX 10.6 with an Intel Core 2GH and 1GB RAM.

Even more interesting: What kind of graphic card does it use?

You say there are no buttons, but what about symbols, the buttons, that are supposed to be on the right of the spellbook are all pictures, a purple orb, a windy looking swirl, ect

The screenshot:

Graphic card: Intel GMA 950

If I say no buttons, I also mean no symbols, no icons, just nothing.

Other windows like the chat or the inventory work just fine.

:@#\ Why ImageShack, why?! They really messed that thing, you are not anymore able to zoom into these images, and you can hardly spot anything in 320 pixel wide previews. Or did you scale this image down before uploading?

Well...

Who knows the reason; it is possible that the graphic drivers are unable to handle a specific variant of the DirectX Texture Compression; intel GMA 950 is not exactly a recommendable graphic chipset for games, and their drivers are an understatement itself.

now it should be big enough to see something.

I know that my graphic card is not the best for games. Been in trouble before. The weird thing is that the inventory for example works just fine. As do all the other windows. (At least as far as I know.)

Right click window and set "max transparency" to 0% in window settings.

I know other windows do have non-transparent areas. So these buttons may need a kind of non-transparency flag?!

thanks very much

The transparency change did wonders.

There's just one thing left. While fiddling around yesterday I managed to damage my PSLaunch. Which means, I can't change any settings from outside the game or run the updater or anything else. Couldn't find anything relevant in the forum. How can I repair it?

If the repair button, in PSluanch doesnt work, you cant update, and there really 'are' problems with psluanch and in-game options, id reccomend reinstalling

Well it's not only the repair button that's not working. PSLaunch crashes immediately on starting.

Do I have to reinstall the whole game? How can I save my progress then?

Your in-game progress isn't saved on your local machine but on a server-side database afaik. Only your settings, descriptions, books and suchlike is saved on your computer. Backup those files (there's a topic on the forums where to find those files) ocassionally might be a good idea.

Just deleting some of  the settings may be enough depending on what you did to break PSLaunch
Code: [Select]
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Application Support/PlaneShift/

I managed a reinstall. The PSLaunch still crashes sometimes, but at least not all the time. I still think the updater is not running though. I guess, I'll deal with that, once I actually need it. Until then, I prefer to enjoy the game...  :D

Thanks everyone for helping me out.

\\o// Welcome back!

And the updater ... yes ... there are changes going on. PSLaunch does not detect that there is a new selection of updater servers unless it is forced to. I believe you may do that by removing some update*.xml files, but keep a backup in case I was wrong here.

Has anyone something less vague? If not, I'd rather not fiddle around.

Unofficial temporary solution: Use the following entry
Code: [Select]
<mirror id="1" name="sajut" url="http://updater.sajut.de/" />instead of the present three lines in updaterinfo.xml and updateservers.xml – in the meantime, I will try to get official support here.
__

updateservers.xml
Code: [Select]
<mirrors>
        <mirror id="1" name="ss9" url="http://ss9.us/update/" repair="false" />
</mirrors>

if you run pslaunch as admin 2 times it will work well without any mess

Did not for me. I ran it about 30 times until I got this information.

Probably after removing some file from %APPDATA%\PlaneShift, but I am not sure (at least updateservers.xml.download at 0 bytes). Or because Talad updated something on the server in the meantime, who knows... we talked in IRC during this action.

Well, I can't. If I try to open those files, it opens another game instead. (Big Bang Board Games 4-in-a-Row)

And while we're at it, I have other files that open "Battle for Wesnoth". (all .cfg files)

I have an updater log, but it's empty....

Open the file with TextEdit or some other text editor.

Strange settings you have mostly a xml file gets opened by your browser.

ok it seems the update server crashed a bit difficult to find an update in a 404 page >_> well it's not engine fault but someone's else :P

A (double-) click in the Windows Explorer is not the only way to open a file. And it only opens the default application currently assigned to that filename extension, which does not need to be the best choice for editing its content. In your case, a game is assigned as default application to load XML files, probably as savegame? The programmer who programmed this default assignment should be shot in the foot...

With a right-click, you may already get a sub-menu in the context menu, under an entry like "Open with...". If this list doesn't contain any useful editor, add a new application to this list. The simple "Editor" (notepad.exe) may already be suitable. But there are more convenient text editors out there: ConTEXT, PSPad, Notepad2, Notepad++ ... even Microsoft's "XML Notepad 2007" specifically to edit XMLs with its tree structure.

Well the default assignment for the .cfg files seems to be "Battle for Wesnoth Campaigns".  :D It's good to know I can shoot someone else. I first thought I have to shoot myself...

I'll give it a try opening it differently. But please I'm on Mac OSX. Your Windows options aren't very helpful...

--> Textedit did the job. What program should I use for the .cfg files?

--> The updater is running.  \\o// Thanks to all!

Not very usefull on a Mac LigH

Indeed  ;)

Oops, sorry.  :-[ I read "Windows XP" somewhere above in the first posts. But that was another user.

But the opinion about the programmer assigning games to generic but standardized file types remains valid.

I have found a workaround to get the updater working (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=39511.0), at least for Windows 32 bit.
