i have 5 metallurgy but am not currently able to make steel. i put 9 iron and 1 coal into the furnace but it says. you do not have the right amount of the right items for what you have in mind. i have the working with stock book in the mind slot but wont work the book says i can make steel sludge but it wont let me make it can someone help me figure this out. is it a bug

You can't make the steel sludge directly at the furnace. You need to find a "Smith Table" (it's a table that's usually nearby forges and furnaces), throw the items within and then press the "Combine" slot.
After you get the sludge mixed at the table, you just need to throw it into the furnace, wait until it's molten, then throw it into the stock casting. Read the books more carefully, I know they're a bit hard to look at, but it's what we have to do.

Press combine button when you have the items in the container

You can combine in any container doesn,t matter witch one

If he got the message it means he pressed the combine button. He's just pressing it at the wrong container. Instead of combining it at the furnace, you need to combine it at the Smith Table.
EDIT: If it is as you say (which I doubt but since I never tried I won't totally refute), then I'm not sure what's the problem. Sometimes things work better if you have the skill trained (i.e. the bar should be green.)

You can combine in any container even furnace just take it out after combining and put it in furnace again.
Even in a sack, stock casting, oven, table, pan, grill etc it does not matter what you want to combine any container will work as long as it,s on the ground.

I don't trust you. But he might :D
-
Just try it drop a sack on the ground put some items in it to combine and pres combine it will work

-
Are you pressing the "combine" button fast enough? Sometimes it happens to me that I am too slow and the iron ore melts before I press the button.

On the image, the window on the right top. The icon between the two hands and the eye: that's what the icon "Combine" looks like and that's what you should press.

If you are ever confused at how to do any crafting step properly, you can read through the appropriate crafting book to see what you can and cannot do and how to do each step correctly. Of course it's a jumbled mess with absolutely no comprehensible organizational theme, but hey, that's what makes this game so unique, idn't it?
-
The command /study displays the last book you read in a little more readable way. The same jumbled mess, I'm afraid, but in a clearer font.
