Title: Game Freezes Since 0.5.7 Update

Hi there, I need some help. Ever since I updated to version 0.5.7, my game has been freezing up after a few moments of play. Sometimes I get a long stretch of time before it happens, but usually it freezes after a minute or two, sometimes immediately after the game starts. I then have to close the game and start over again.

I've got the latest driver update, so I guess that's not the problem. I don't know enough about computers to figure out what to do next. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose I should mention that I'm using Windows XP Pro. I don't know what other information is needed.

Try changing the "background loading" option to different settings. It might help.

Click on the PS icon to start the game.
The 1st screen that appears shows: Quit, Repair, Settings at the bottom.
Click on "Settings", then at the top: "Graphics"
Near the bottom of that page you'll find: Background Loading
Click "OK" to exit.

Okay, I've tried changing that, and a few other settings, but it doesn't seem to be making a difference. Any other ideas? I'm starting to go into withdrawal... :'(

Okay, I tried that too, but it didn't work either. I'm wondering if this isn't something more serious, as I've also had problems with the game freezing each time I tried to tell the Hydlaa pterosaur trainer where I wanted to go. He was the only one I talked to today, so don't know if the problem is with talking to him, NPCs or everyone. Additionally, I'm finding that when I get the game to close after a freeze-up, it will automatically relaunch itself, which it didn't do before. Not sure if any of these are related, but there they are.

Can you provide any more info, such as what I'm posting below? (I've got something similar to that problem with Win 7 x64 Ultimate instead of XP-Pro) Any other info when it hangs or crashes? How did you do the last update/upgrade? What is the contents of the file errorlog.txt?

The errorlog.txt file is in the main Planeshift folder (C:\Program Files\Planeshift) or wherever you installed it. The other info is from windows itself when it notices Planeshift isn't responding. and asks what you want to do about it (when you expand for more information.)

I'm having the same problem (trying to play the game for the first time :(  )

I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit) with an NVIDIA graphics card (Updated).

While trying to start the tutorial, the game keeps crashing after a little while (different spans of time on different settings if I'm just walking around - seems longest on the best settings honestly, so I doubt overtaxing the system is the problem :P ), but will crash instantly if I try to talk to an NPC.

In the error log folder, it basicly just has the same thing over and over:

Same problem after new install of PS 0.5.7 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 x64. Client just randomly freezes then:

Deleting shadercache & disabling background loading doesn't help.

Redhound - Your idea worked pretty well, but I'd like to be able to talk to people and do quests, if there's another solution out there. I agree that it seems to have something to do with the Chat Window, it freezes when I try to start quests or talk to people.

Hey Tuhrell here  :D,

Starting from scratch, I am new to Planeshift, and having ran just a bout every  rpg i can think of on my computer, I rarely ever had any issues, so i hope this helps, I'm getting the same problems as these guys.

I've made a new account, and read about all the characters before making one, I have read every detail before creating one.  Everything works great there, but when I enter the game
 that's when it freezes, randomly.

 I have tried updating my graphics card, deleting shadercache , everything that everyone suggested.

 I have tried to turn my chat off as well, but it still freezes, seems like at random, sometimes when i click on things, sometimes when i don't click on things.  
 then I tried just standing there with the chat on,  and standing there with chat off.  Still it freezes and I still get the "program not responding " in the top window
.   I really hope this helps, I was very excited when reading about the game and development on it and
my first impression was this is something i could really get into.  I'll be trying to find this updater and still browsing around the forums if you have anymore questions about my post, I'll do my best to give more detailed info if needed.

Same here, on Ubuntu 10.10. The game freeze immidiatly after loading, or it can take up to 1 minute. I've switch the graphics to minimum, closed the chat window, nothing help.

Well to be exact, only the refresh seams to be stoping, because the process still change between 90-100% of the CPU. I've tried to move after it crash (to see if it send commands), but it doesn't.

I've checked error.txt, but the errors occurs when I load the application, not when it crash.

I confirm, "Chat-Window-Off" workaround is not 100% working,
Client stil freezes, but in my case time before it happends became 1 / 1.5 hours. Maybe, it's just a random again.

gdb was to break the execution provided the debug symbols (which i need to provide first). as a first thing try deleting the shadercache. also are these single core pc?

Where can I find a debug symbols?

It's a dual-core -  AMD Turion X2 2GHz.
Ubuntu 11.04 x64
RAM: 4Gb
Video: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 512Mb

Deleting shadercache has no effect, but I'll try to add an "rm" to psclient start script just to be shure.

I have the same problem after the update,
plus I can't attack to NPC's, maybe the server needs a restart or something.

I'm having the same problem too  :(

Mine only appears too happen when I try to talk to an NPC though, I can open the initial dialog box that shows a highlightable item (I assume its a quest) but if I try to open that and find out what to do, it crashes.
To begin with it was showing me an error report but now I have to go into the Task Manager and end the psclient.exe process, and I get no error messages.
I first thought it might be the graphics as I threw them straight to max but changing them didn't do anything. I have also tried in in both Windowed mode and fullscreen to make sure it wasn't a graphics problem.
I have also tried using the repair tool and a complete reinstall and both yield no improvements.

My computer spec' (if needed) is as follows:

Graphics  - NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+
Graphics Driver version - 8.17.12.6658
RAM - 4GB 1066hz

you know guys, it takes awhile to make the shadercache file also and last time i looked my pc slows down hard when that happens and lets go after say 1-2min if it's something big, it takes awhile to add everything to it but eventualy those lags should become less and less, just adding thought to the discussion.

My PC is brand-new, custom-built, and running Windows 7 with a quad-core processor and a GeForce 9500 GT graphics card. I'm having this exact same issue... I'm unable to use the chat window without my game freezing, and it'll also randomly freeze over a small period of time as I remain logged into the game (ten minutes is the longest it's gone). This isn't an OS issue... it's happening across the board. The solutions mentioned here aren't really helping with any of it.

By the way, I get the same error with GDB as everyone else.

And It's not a shadercache issue. I've just install the game under 0.5.6 and it worked like a charm. A little "buggy" at first, but not a lot. With 0.5.7, it keep jammin and it never recover, well I've never waited more than 10 minutes... but I don't think it's a cache problem if I have to wait 10 minutes.

gdb is not a fix it's a way to see the problem I need to know what is running when it deadlocks ctrl+c + bt/bt full/thread apply all bt/ thread apply all bt full

in most linux os using some sort of automatic module building on the kernel and most long standing distributions gdb is preinstalled. in the other cases you can find it in your repository or by installing the development tools. then it's just gdb ./application (remember to first execute by hand the content of psclient in the installation folder and pass the bin to gdb) and then run. for the rest run the commands I've given above

seems you can fix the chat thing by disabling the bad words filters. that explains why only a little amount of people can reproduce it (looks like most people nuke that function), anyway I’ll test if by enabling it I can get the issue too

I have just gone through the bounty of settings and it would seem that turning off the filter does indeed stop the game from freezing.
I don't know whether this will only be a temp' fix or not but it appears to have worked for now, which is good enough for me to have a look around, so thankyou for pointing at that setting  :thumbup:

With incoming / outgoing bad words filters switched off, it's really works now. No freeze on chat / commands / NPC dialogs. Fully playable RP-game again  :)

One more thing - I could not reproduce yet random freeze (only chat freeze) on a debug binary psclient.bin, even with bad words filters are on. I will check it later.

this is a fixed linux build please test it (it's a drop in replacement). to test it you need to delete the chat.xml in options ~/.PlaneShift/options/chat.xml in order to return to the previous state (when it frooze)

gdb was to break the execution provided the debug symbols (which i need to provide first). as a first thing try deleting the shadercache. also are these single core pc?
My desktop is a Quad-Core Phenom II X4 955BE, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD5870 with Catalyst 11.5 drivers
My laptop is a dual core Turion64 X2, 2GB RAM, Radeon X1200 series with the last Catalyst drivers that supported that chipset.

The desktop is using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
The laptop is using Windows Vista 32-bit

Adjusting the game's graphics setting via the launcher on the desktop PC, closing the chat window, disabling the badwords filter: all that makes no real difference.

Downloading the windows fix file from mega.

Same on the windows fix? Delete this? Deleting it, or leaving it there seems to make no difference... Still hangs.

EDIT: should have said hang instead of crash.... as Windows states an app-hang, not an app-crash. Sorry for the confusion.

I've tried it, but hard to say if that fixed it.
I've delet the chat.xml file, and run the new binary, and it didn't frooze (tried it for 15 minutes).

But when I tried the old one, it didn't froze anymore... seams like the chat.xml was important for the bug to append...

Will do some more test.

 :oops: My bad. meant hangs, not crashes. Windows doesn't report an app crash, just an app hang. (fails to respond.) Fixed in my previous post now.

Also of note: starting the client with the -console option provides a pause initially upon hang, and then the console reports back the following about every second: (stripped of date/time stamp.) (Also shows up in errorlog.txt)  It makes me wonder if there is some kind of inability to deal with network traffic either during whatever happens during the hang, or perhaps the network code is causing it? Just guessing here as I don't know of any changes in the networking code between 0.5.7. and 0.5.6, which seems to have been relatively free of this hang.

Which version of VS -- 2005? 2008? 2010? I got 'em (NOT express editions of various compilers either. 2010 Professional is installed atm.)
I guess I can DL the source, compile it (after getting the code for the dependencies, such as OpenGL,) and run it within debug mode and hopefully discover. I presume there is a list of library dependencies.

It doesn't ask to debug, because it only hangs. The buffer overrun error is sent out once a second. If it crashed I think It wouldn't do that.

UPDATE: I may have a case of operator error. I was running the original PSCLIENT.EXE instead of PSCLIENT_STATIC.EXE....  :oops:
 So far no noted hangs with what you had uploaded... time to rename the files.
