Ara's been working real hard learning to craft shields. I thought it'd be fun to design some shields for her. So, if you ever end up with one in game, use your little imagination thingy to picture it looking like one of these. created using illustrator and photoshop.

Sound like sombody is jealous
Since I've seen people argue that Stephen King only disses Twilight because he's jealous of Stephenie Meyer, I'm afraid I can't take that (knowledgable and carefully crafted, granted) argument very seriously.

Caym - what's your point?
My point is that this is very bad, and denotes a complete lack of both talent and skill.
Don't feed the trolls.
Ah, it seems we have somewhat of a DeviantArt mojo going on here.
By blindly praising whatever crap gets posted, you think you're doing the poster a favor, and therefore allow yourself to dismiss any actual criticism as "trolling" from what you perceive as a moral high ground.
However, by rejecting the very idea of pointing out shortcomings in the "art" that is posted, you actually encourage the aspiring artists to wallow in mediocrity. Certain that they have already attained excellence, they will never try to better themselves, and will therefore never feel the true joy and pride born from knowing you're better than you were, that your relentless work has born fruit, that you have overcome a weakness, perfected a talent, reached what a few days before was unreachable.
And instead of the true glory genuine praise, all they get is half-hearted, distracted congratulations from illiterate sheep that couldn't spare more than a passing glance and a few short words to make themselves feel magnanimous.
So, no, you're not helping. I am.

Don't feed the trolls.
A troll still has more literary value than any happy birthday fart you let out the years you've spent on this forum.

Caym,
My intent is for this post to be a force of gravity between us. You see, the universe is divided into such forces, those that bring two objects together, and those that drive two objects apart. Consider this as you prepare to read any further.
I think you are assuming that I feel that these designs were in any sense mindblowingly spectacular. I do not. I had a vision in mind and I used the tools I had available to create something that would convey that vision with a glimmer of accuracy. Photoshop is a tool; everyone has the right to use it how they see fit. I'm happy with my work; I think I did a job well done. There's nothing you can say to take that away from me. I'd hate to think that was your intention. I am going to continue working on this project, if anything for my own benefit of seeing it through it's completion.
At no point in your posts have you singled out, identified, or given a name to whatever it is you find so displeasing about my work. I'd prefer if you did, rather than try to offend me. I, in no way, tried to offend you. I truly fail to see how you're helping anybody but yourself, and only in what I find to be a petty fashion. I feel confident enough to label it "bad form".
Here's to your health. I wish you brighter days ahead.
(yes I'm aware the we just passed through the Solstice, which technically means that the days directly ahead of us will contain less and less hours of sunlight, but you get my drift.)

caym didn't mean any harm. he has good intentions, and made a point that this forum has needed for a long time. he just didn't get that aramara was not striving for a glorious piece of art. which is understandable. but aramara only meant for her designs to be references.
case closed. :detective:

Case closed? I doubt it. Knowing "him" I don't think it's closed at all now.
Caym,

Photoshop is a tool that should be used by competent people or people that are trying to learn to be competent with it. It has a fairly large price tag on it, which should show you that you're better off with paint or gimp. Your vision is flawed by what I am seeing here, your off-balanced colors and extreme use of the standard blending options are proof that you're not really serious about this whole affair. The design lacks any charm or effort and you should therefor not bother putting it up for other people to see.
There is no way not to offend you because everything I see here is not worthy of praise.
If you wish to convey your thoughts on what is in your head, and you want to do it visually, first offer us a sketch, concept or idea. Don't blind us with this.
And if you wish people to compliment you, don't spend 3 minutes into something half-assed you know isn't going to be praised.

These are exactly that. The colors are meant to represent the materials of the shield, iron, steel, bronze. I don't wish to be complimented, it's nice when it happens, but I don't expect it. This is a visual reference for those that purchase a shield from my character in game, simple as that.

You say its critisism,, Others say its trolling.
Its just you, randomly trying to bring this chick down, critisism, is a well thought out, combination of both good and bad aspects of somthing sombody has done.Along with a thought out way of improvment.
What you stated there, was not critisism, it doesnt even deserve to be called rhino shi*

"a garish iron shield, festooned with small steel rivets and containing a blindingly bright circular pattern"
The only only statement made thus far in this thread that I can accept as an actual critique. Thank you Rinenud.
-
Do not be happy about receiving critique from a troll (Rinenud). My personal opinion is that the idea is nice but it was implented poorly.

This thread is funny, someone made something not so good visually and here we got flamewars already. Its like some old western where someone hits someone else in a saloon and everyone starts fighting within seconds. Take it to kada el's!

An in game description would be the best you could use here. Some shields in game are good-looking (for example, the golden shield). A buckler isn't how you think it is, but a small round piece of wood covered by leather with a steel/bronze/iron dome on the center. A small round shield used to be that, round, with some edging around it, and maybe some bands to reinforce it. Some could even engrave magical runes or names, or enemies they've defeated with the help of that shield.
In the medieval times, though, shields didn't use to be round except cheap shields. I'm sure you've seen those kite shields as they're called (which would be valiant and wooden and metal shields in game, even though these are perhaps too rough). Also, the pattern you've used for that small round shield would've been pretty difficult for a blacksmith to achieve without the use of perforation and cut tools, which are relatively modern items. Such a shield, if crafted, would've been worth a lot of money.
And as for the art… *big sigh*:
The colors and gradients are "horribru!". Really. I'm not saying you have no taste, I'm just saying that you could've done it far better than that. Plainly, it hurts my eyes. Make the color gradients richer, with more reflections and shadows. Use the central and linear gradients. Also, the burn and dodge tools, when used on a duplicate layers, might help you to achieve the shadows and higlights you desire, but be careful. There are also the lighting effects, and play with the layer modes. And please, please, PLEASE, save your works in PNG format.
/me blushes a bit and looks down "But, em, you know… whatever you want to do to it is fine…"

Look. Shhhhhh. Shhh. Shhh. It's ok, look.
I get it. We are all little flecks of light clawing for the chance to grab each other's attention, for a chance to look into each other's eyes. It's ok, you don't have to be belligerent about it. I will let you look into my eyes.
I thank you for your remarks, all, for through them I can see the effectiveness of my work.
Picture you are an ulber, stumbling through the grasses of the wilderness with not much on your mind, when suddenly, a flash of light, a beam of dissonant frequencies. You are blinded, startled, pain in your pea-sized brain. Unable to weigh any other options, you charge forward to the source of discomfort, fangs and claws bared, snarling, lashing forth. You reach your target and what are you confronted with? A garish iron shield, festooned with small steel rivets and containing a blindingly bright circular pattern. This enrages you! Oh, you can't stand it! What sick and twisted mind could create such a foul horror! Danger! Danger!
You flail your claws and teeth about, only to be met with a hard resistance. Suddelny a piercing pain in your side. You yowl in agony and glance at the wound, but where did it come from? You look about for your target, but what do you see? A garish iron shield, festooned with small steel rivets and containing a blindingly bright circular pattern.
Fail to see the metaphor? The walrus is Paul.
What is the one thing you want to bring attention to in combat? Your shield. That is its function. To draw attention away from your main force, so you may strike when your enemy is not looking. Don't you want your shield to blind your opponent? Don't you want to enrage them with its audacity that it becomes the only thing they can focus on? A shield can take a hit, your face can't. These are the shields I offer to you. I will be selling them at the Amdeneir Fair.

Just try to put some effort into it Aramara. And if you want to get acquainted with Photoshop read some tutorials. Mishka's post is spot on.
If you don't, I suggest you stick to describing the thing in words, you might even get someone else to make a design for it if you ask nicely.

It was fine until Catlemur entered. Now it is less a Western and more a Greek tragedy.
Awaiting further critiques.

Danger! Danger!
HIGH VOLTAGE!
Sorry couldn't help it, E6 ftw. Anyways the idea itself was good but as you can see from the massive atomic war going on in here the implementation wasn't. Maybe tone down the brightness? The thing is blindingly bright (even if it's supposed to be that way, you could just say it's shiny as hell and tone down the light!)
