I've just started playing on a Mac, and everytime I try to talk to someone, it freezes. Whenever I talk to someone (like the tutorial or gate opener) it just freezes once i hit enter after selecting a phrase. So I'm currently stuck in the gossip server and I really need help!

update to 0.5.7.1
-
I have that version

What are the specifications of your Mac? OsX version? Graphic chipset? Amount of RAM? If you start the game from a terminal console, does it says something?
-
It is an OSX version 10.6.6
Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Suddenly a couple of days ago great lagging started to occur during access to the PS server. After following this thread the suggestion to upgrade to 0.5.7.1 seemed a sound one. This has been accomplished yet the lagging (actually hogging of the CPU of up to over 100% usage) has continued.
During the period of lagging the following message is being returned repeatedly in the text window:
Fri Jul 1 03:47:25 2011, Got DR message for unknown entity EID:11151.
Fri Jul 1 03:47:25 2011, <src/client/psclientdr.cpp:223 HandleDeadReckon SEVERE>

The mouse is not lagged and moves smoothly through the game window.
The system is use is at the low end of excepted limits. It is an IBM ThinkCentre running Linux with 992.2 MB of RAM and an Intel(R) 4 CPU 3.00Ghz.
The logical conclusion is that this machine is now outdated; yet it would be nice to know what has changed recently which may have caused it.
Any insights would be appreciated.

How is that related to the title of this thread?

3D Graphic "lag" (or rather delaying, temporary freezing) is not the same as network lag (surprising positioning of other chars, despite rather fluid graphics). If your client has a hard time handling the game (most probably based on the amount of RAM it takes, probably also the amount of video memory available to store textures), your own fluid movement and world display is reduced. If the network connection to the server was the problem, it would be the fluid movement of others you see.

Had the exact same problem, and I found turning off the chat filters fixed it!
Open the Options menu in game, scroll all the way down and find Interface > Chat. Then deselect the incoming and outgoing bad word filters.
I hope it works for you!

and that's fixed in 0.5.7.1.
the only thing which changed outside that fix is the magic spell. remove them from your system

And the only thing that changed with the character is that it was initiated into the crystal way. :D
Removing the spells did not help. It is likely the staff which the character is now carrying in its inventory which is doing it. A test was done with another alt which has no magic abilities and it works fine.
Thanks for the lead weltall. I shall seek GM help at this stage.

Well, version 0.5.7 introduced normal maps, and I don't know if update 0.5.7.1 added a few more; they will probably add to the local client load.
But this is still unrelated to crashes due to using the chat.

You misunderstand, LigH, this is affecting only one character. An alt was loaded and all is fine. When the alt was on there was a chance to chat with Seena. The bugged character was then loaded and Seena removed the wand and initiation to the crystal way. However that had no affect but for a brief moment and the cpu hogging and lagging returned in seconds.
Seena suggested that weltall may be the one that can fix the character. Up for the challenge?
It would be a shame to loose this character as it has brought me back into game play and without it it shall probably be back to the world of wesnoth for me.

[ Edit : Found a fix in the meantime by running psclient through nice. ie. "nice ./psclient". That keeps it below 100% CPU usage at least and the character seems able to walk around. ]
[Edit: Not as good a fix as it appeared at first. :( ]

set particles to medium. old cards have issues with that expecially intel
-
Particles have been set to medium. A more permanent fix was found. That is to leave the inventory window open! Weird what? Anyway, until some more permanent solution can be found that seems to have removed the lagging.
