Title: Large customization abilities
Post by: Skain on May 30, 2003, 02:42:36 pm
MMORPGS are a way of escapizm, creativity, individual expression as well as good fun for many ppl, i love just designing my own characters, it would be great to be able to customize the characters with various items and also have a much wider variety of skins to create from.
=)
anyone agree?

I agree that you should have many skins and the ability to customizise you character in detail ie. You should be able to customizise you characters eye-color, hair, ears, mouth, beard etc. etc.
But I don\'t think that you should customizise you characters clothes from the beginning. It\'s better if PS uses the \"morrowind\" layer system.

Check this.

Title: The great thing about clothes

When clothes can be layered like in Morrowind, it really makes you bond with your character.   If you can totally customize how you look, you get into the mood.

Layering:

Some items should be able to layer over others.   I do not know how difficult this is to code though.  A cloak should be able to layer over everything except winged creatures.  Loose robes should be the same.  Now a baggy shirt should be able to fit over leather armor, but not plate.  A tabard should fit over plate.  Everyone sees where I am going with this.

Layering should not be done armor-over-armor for obivious reasons.  If you wanted to really expand armor, you could make \'under-armor\' for lack of a better word.  Chain coifs under a skull cap would be a good example.  Strength and endurance should be the limiting factors on those.

Just a few thoughts

That sounds really hard to implement, but really cool Dizzle.  I\'ll think about ways we might do that.

maybe giving every clothing item a layer value (1 being the lowest for normal clothing) alongside other (standard) modification values

some examples:
leather helmet: armour=+1 weight=+2 place=head layer=1
cat\'s paw: armour=+2 weight=+4 place=arms layer=1 other=\"nightvision+4, infravision+1\"
mihril mail: armour=+15 weight=10 place=torso layer=1
cape of might: armour=+0 weight=3 place=torso layer=10 other=\"strenth+5 charisma+1\"

why cape layer=10? ...because capes are usually worn over everything else (including weapons and rucksacs), so it would have to be a high enough layer in order of other newly invented layers not to cause a glitch like people wearing clothing over capes

i\'m no programmer, so it\'s just an idea

i\'m not sure if the \"place\" option is needed, it was just how i imagine the clothing working ...i imagine you have to set it where and how the clothing/armour should be and move (arms, legs, torso, head, feet...)

ok, i know this way you can\'t play superman with your underwear over your trousers or on your head, but i think it\'s better this way

maybe jewelry would have an option how to wear it \"over\" (being layer 9 so you don\'t wear it over the cape) or \"under\" (layer 0) other clothes

Your idea for number assignment of the layers gives me yet another idea.

Using transparency, you could make other things with a layer value of 0 or 1.  This would appear to be directly on the base model itself.  What does this mean?  Tattoos, piercings, and the like.

Also, using transparency, you could add jewelry.  This would mean if someone wanted to symbolize they follow Talad, they could wear a thick gold armlet clasped around the right bicep.  (read the history)

Tattoos, piercings, and jewelry.  These really could make a character yours.  No two characters would look identical, (unless they wanted to).

Just a thought

Another idea with transparency in mind.  You could get logos put on cloaks and other clothing.  Guilds could be identified by logos and colors.  I think that could make things very interesting.
