Title: Message of the Day blocked
Post by: bilbous on August 31, 2011, 04:56:45 pm
The message of the day in the selector bar [Home Help Search etc] is obscured by the selected highlight background in Firefox 3.6.2 on linux.

To clarify: the home link is currently selected and blocks out half the 5 and whatever comes before it in ".5.7 is ready, join the fun" If I hold the mouse over Help it blocks out the ".7 is read" and so on. It would be better to put the message of the day elsewhere -- say underneath the date below Hello user and the unread and new links. I imagine it would require some manual editing but should not be too hard.

Ok I will take a look at that.   The theme is still not quite 100% so any of these remaining issues let me know and I can see what I can do.

I've experienced the same, but not in all pages. It happens only at times.

It's the "News: 0.5.7 is ready, join the fun! " text

It happens to me only when I'm logged out.

An alternative to moving the text might be increasing the transparency of the highlight color. The flat color negates the texture of the background and looks a little jarring.

When I reset the zoom of text in my Firefox, the MOTD is correctly placed.

edit:
it seems the divs #userarea and #news-wrap change their height/position when the user is logged off.
Hence the reason of menu superimposed to the MOTD.

Indeed, I do have minimum font sizes (14, I think) set in my browser which seems to cause problems with many sites. Are you suggesting that the MOTD text is not supposed to be overtop the textured blue bar where the links are? The highlight background colors extend the full height of this element.

Yep.
This is the element after resetting the zoom for me. Fonts properties are determined by the original CSS in my case.

PS: same browser version and OS

That must be it then. Isn't it awesome how easy it is to break page format even after ten years+ of markup development?
I do not think any further consideration of this is warranted although it would be nice if the highlights were transparent enough to have some of the texturing show through.
