Title: Mary Sue Litmus Test
Post by: Aramara Meibi on September 04, 2011, 04:35:45 pm
Are we a game populated with Mary Sues?

...most likely

see for yourself.

http://www.springhole.net/quizzes/marysue.htm

read the instructions carefully and keep in mind that you can not control how other characters act towards your character. I tried to answer more based on the background I have written for Ara than what's occurred in game.

btw, Ara scored a 24.

That was kind of interesting to do. I had a 21 up to the last part where points get subtracted and ended up with a 10 after that. Half of the questions I answered yes to were for things about how other chars. act towards mine where I feel like I have no direct control over. I guess there's room for more "spice" according to this test.

Got a 21... Mostly due to Mekora's cowardliness. ;P

steuben managed to score a 19... but i think he should be a bit higher.

and oddly my pet villian, sulus, seems to score a 16, and he was designed to be a mary sue.

this is so old my great granny was named after this test. still, it's good for the noobs to be reminded once in a while.

-13!  :D sarras wins!

not wasting my time testing other characters.  X-/

My main character got a zero. I feel bad that I didn't get a negative score. :(

Monala got 16 (saved by the de-suifiers, too) and Chays got 11...my other characters aren't really developed enough for a fair shot at this.

Oh hey! This test! :woot: I haven't seen this since I posted that link (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=30519.msg349861#msg349861) 4 years ago. Nice to see the numbers have come down since then. I retook the test for Illy and this time I got a 3... I guess she got even less sueish over time. :)

Monala got relatively high scores cause of the crazy huh Candy? ;) I'm surprised that Dannae got up to 21 though.

Hehehe.... Ok, I got 16 for Tesh, but if I discount some of the actions based on other characters in game, it drops to 6.

I particularly love this line:

Quote
Is your character ever manipulated or used as an unwitting pawn by someone without the aid of mind-control technology, magic, or drugs?
*With tragic results?

Seriously, these people have never heard of Travosh.

I remember!  :flowers:

I'd love it if someone made one of these for PS. It could have a section on roleplay depth, like whether or not your interactions with other characters carry forward to future roleplays, or bonus points for allowing your character to permadeath (when it advances the roleplay environment). The survey has a lot on writing characters and forming plotlines, but it has slightly less on how you run your character. It's still awesome though.

yes, I found the survey to be geared more towards fanfics or original fiction, where the author is in control of how other characters treat the character in question.

and sorry Illysia for reposting the link... I wasn't around 4 years ago.

I can't do this test :/ I have stable and unstable characters, loyal and unfaithful, etc… I'll try with Mishka, though, will edit to post the result here.

Edit: Mish got a 29 ^^' Can't say I didn't expect it. Actually I'm disappointed I didn't get more.

Well that's funny. I posted this link too - a year and a half before Illysia xD Jjairr got a 39 when I took it that time, but somehow it dropped down to a -1. I guess Jjairr has become significantly less interesting over time. Of course that was five years ago. Maybe I've just become a better roleplayer.

I think a PS-specific Mary Sue test would be amazing.

@Aramara: No worries, it's not like most of the people that originally saw that thread are still around to reminisce about it. ;)

@Sarras: Ok, I retook the test for Ech and got -5 which is probably about as low as any of my characters will ever get. So... *Ppbbbblllltttt* :P

@Mishka: You aren't supposed to get higher scores. :P

@Jjairr: A year and a half before that post, I was probably still sticking with the technical forums. XD I didn't read much on the forum besides bug fixing. XD And less sue doesn't mean uninteresting, just maybe not as much stuff going on. :3 However, I think a litmus test for PS would probably cause more grief than say humor or help... After all, that walks on the "good RP" -"godmodding/MarySue" border.

a lower score just means your character is realistic (in a fictional setting, of course). sarras had plenty of stuff going on. but it's all believable. also, a character's strengths and weaknesses should balance out. their personality, psychology, goals, and actions should connect and actually make sense. aaand, finally, when you make a character, try to avoid stereotypes.

literally, i have already met at least 80% of your characters in other roleplaying games, movies, books, shows, etc. but it's not that bad. nearly everything's been done before.

ooook gtg

Oh they have, part of being ultrafine. I just requested to not have his likeness used, would make unusable standards.
