Title: first release
Post by: potare on October 04, 2011, 12:06:16 pm
is there a way to play the original releases
I know this is quite a stupid question so don't waste a post saying negative stuff.

Probably not.

Client and server software use a protocol to exchange data, which changed over the development time, as well as the database structure in the server to store world and character data.

It will hardly be possible to make an old version available again while the current version is active. Especially not because the internet gaming server machine used in those times is not available anymore, but who knows if its address was hardcoded...

To do that you will need the original client AND the original server code AND the original database data.

The first can be found online (anyway I have it). The second is hard to reproduce as we migrated between different systems for source code management, and I think the original one is now gone. The third is pretty hard to reproduce without a backup, and my oldest backup is around 2004, so not really the first release.

Anyway what about PlaneShift 2D then? In that case the client I still have, the server I'm really not sure.

Just noticed it states at the top that it's Molecular Blue release

It looks like a cartoon, they would of probably changed them to make them look more realistic.

Wow, Hydlaa used to be just grass and a bit of pavement, it has sure changed a lot since then!!

As far as I remember from tales, she was a normal player playing regularly the waitress and owner of the tavern, so even the map was named after her. But I might be wrong. I joined when she was already gone.

I've always wanted to play old versions of PS! Just to see what it was like, and maybe appreciate how far it's come a little more.

Playing PS 2D would be epic.

Well, if that was possible, it would be a great event for "20 years of PlaneShift", if you count the inception of PlaneShift2D (http://planeshift.ezpcusa.com/pswiki/index.php?title=PlaneShift2D) as beginning.

Or "18 years = Adulthood" if it is the first development team creation.

Or "10 years" in May for the first 3D version (http://planeshift.ezpcusa.com/pswiki/index.php?title=Atomic_Blue#0.1.000.2B).

2012 will have its reasons to party. ;D

i did some deep digging. the webarhive had some pointers.

though it managed to locate the .2 server and client code. it was in a nice bundle on the ps website at one point. i haven't cracked it open yet to see if it contains any place holder data. i really got lucky with that.

i also managed to locate a copy of the .1 client. but not the server code.

now slighty tricky question. how different is the art from .1 to .2? could you load up the .1 art in .2   and get away with it? or do you really need the .1 server?
