I just signed up and downloaded the game. I'm at the "Create New Character" Screen, and there is no button to finish. At the lower right there are "Quick" and "Advanced" buttons. Clicking these, a message pops up saying to review my name before clicking "next" again. This seems to imply these buttons are supposed to be "next" buttons, or something. I don't know. When I click "OK" and click either "Quick" or "Advanced" again, it says "First name already in use" or something.
Help! How do I finish creating my character??

You are on the right track.
Unfortunately, a character must have especially a unique first name (it is an identification attribute), and in general even a unique family name. So if another character uses the name you wanted to use ... your bad, too late, try to choose another. Preferably use the randomizer until you find one that both sounds good to you and is available.
Sorry for this inconvenience; so many names are already taken by characters which are not really active anymore (or blocked because they are already famous in another context).

Also be sure to read the naming policies here http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=31960.0 (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=31960.0) The basic idea is that character names should not make reference to real world people, places or things either fictional or non fictional. The idea is to have a unique name which doesn't make you think of the real world. I think no matter what name you choose you get a message asking if you are sure the name fits under the naming guidelines. If you name does just hit OK to continue.
