Ok so I have been following the instructions given in the forum thread http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=31776.0
After I made the file executable and tried to run it, it told me that the file does not exist.

It did the same thing last time i downloaded the game.

ok so I just got it to work!! :D here is an updated paste of my terminal. i moved the file to my "games" folder. WISH ME LUCK!!! :D

does this mean that my computer is not good enough for the game or is there something i can do to fix it?

What gfx card do you have? And more important...do you have the drivers for the cards installed. Not sure, but I think PS doesn't work with the opensource nvidia drivers for example. So for nvidia cards you will need the binary drivers for nvidia. I think most linux distributions offer those in their repositories.

I wonder why PlaneShift even has a joystick plugin that is enabled by default, do many people use a joystick to play the game?
you might try finding "System.Plugins.joystick = crystalspace.device.joystick" in the psclient.cfg file in the install directory and put a semicolon infront of it. Of course if you actually use a joystick that will prevent it from working.
If you did a system-wide install you might be able to start the game just using the command 'planeshift' as it ought to have installed a wrapper script in /usr/bin. You won't need to be in any particular directory either.

ok so i am rather new to Linux and using terminal commands and all that stuff. i used the "additional drivers" program to install the divers for my card but after i restarted my computer it glitched up real bad. i talked to someone and he said that the symptoms said that i had the wrong driver...
so the question is: how do i find out which drivers i need and how do i get them.

first of all you need to know what is your videocard, then most distributions provide them directly from their repositories

Sorry, best I could find...no ubuntu user here. Hope the second part with the hardware center is still valid. "lspci" should always work...but requires starting a shell.

Check the second part of the link...for that no shell is needed. But if you insist on the shell... ;) I think the the terminal in ubunutu is actaully called "Terminal". So look for that in the menu. Once you got that text windows started a "sudo lspci" (with giving a password) should list all (almost) hardware in your computer. Look for stuff like NVIDIA, ATI or intel in that list.

Yes...but here comes the bad news. That card is too old to play PS with it. Sorry :(
