Title: Jacula's Design And Character Concepts
Post by: Jacula on January 27, 2012, 01:39:02 pm
(http://i39.tinypic.com/1535snc.png)

I've been entertaining the idea of somehow taking part in Planeshift anew for a while, making use of the motivation derived from the same to play around a bit in Photoshop.

Having given some thought to what type of character I'd like to play I decided to depict him accordingly, if only to give myself a sense of how his traits might intermingle with his personality and general alignment. I thought I'd post it here, seeing as people might appreciate it, this as I tried to adhere to the settings known in the game.
Said character can be found below, being that of a male ynnwn. I'll look to update the thread with whatever concepts might follow.

I've added a few past designs I no particular order, this being as all of them are role-play oriented. I find it beneficial to look back on past pieces to improve, and hopefully you'll find them interesting as well.

My thanks for the comments. I added an overview of the details for the sake of clarity.

It is indeed an attempt of such.

;D I was thinking more along the lines of what the player is known for than along the lines of aesthetic appeal owed the actual character design.

Nothing implies that the character in question would be evil.  ;)

Take note that I use a combination of merging, drawing, cloning and rendering when creating the designs seen in this thread. As such, making use of stock photos occur, which in turn can leave the finished product with fragments of designs not made by me.

An example of such would be a quick sketch I made, being my take on a Klyros. As can be seen in the original post.

::| Are you already concept artist for PS? If not, why not?

I wonder how you imagine the not yet finished races.

Really excellent work Jacula with compositing all the source images that make up your designs and your original art too! You have a nice flair for setting the lighting and colors to produce dramatic effects and moods.

I've updated the first post to sort out some corrupt file formats, as well as added bigger sizes and more concepts.

Many thanks for the comments at that.
As for applying to the development team, the thought has not come to mind. Nor to I see myself fitted for such a purpose.

Dannae: I find your artworks admirable in turn, and I very much enjoy the style you make use of.

Very nice Jacula, but I think my favorite is the kyros. Probably because it doesn't seem so dark as some of the others. ;) *runs*

Nor to I see myself fitted for such a purpose.

Why not, if except for the lack of time? Your works are great.

I am afraid the image dimensions are scratching the guidelines for forum posts. You may want to externalize the full size images and link them from thumbnails.

I've updated the thread, adding a Diaboli concept I've been working on here and there over the week.

As for my style being dark and gloomy, I am quite aware. I enjoy portraying characters of an insidious nature, although I can very much appreciate the exact contrary from an observing standpoint.

With that in mind, I find the set traits of the Diaboli appealing. Thus I thought I'd give it a go.

Also, take note that some of the designs look darker than they actually are depending on the resolution of one's screen.

Quite extremely dark though. I already had a gamma of 1.7 (from playing PS earlier) when I looked at it, and it was still all black. Now imagine what it would look like if I went back to a linear calibration (gamma 1.0). You must already struggle against banding, I bet, dark ramps won't look acceptable without dithering?

Hey Jac, you could try your hand at all the races in PS! Both in game and deleted. Like Xacha... And maybe imagine how the Sarraghi pack would look like. I don't know, I'm just amazed at all this stuff.

As you know, I really love your style, it's very unique and definitely you. :)
I'm curious to see what idea will inspire you next, keep up the amazing art Jac!

My thanks for the comments. I am pleased to hear that my scribbles are well received :)

As for working more towards depicting Planeshift races and other designs actually beneficial to the community as a whole, I'll consider it.

Should specific matters related to the game unfold within reason, I may well find the motivation and time to help out here and there.

I've updated the original post with a rogue concept, attempting upon capturing a sinister mannerism.
I had The Outlaws in mind as I went about designing it, and I may well look to make a banner as well when time presents itself :)

The Outlaws have been active since 2006, and I have very much enjoyed being a part of the guild. I would encourage those interested in opportunistic and stealthy role-play to apply, as there is much fun to be had within.

I like this last one a lot! Very spooky and  the rogue really has this dangerous "Zak" feel about him.
The name of the rogue down in the mine below the laanx temple was Zak, right? I think.
Great work however, I'd say you captured the outlaws guild perfectly with that image! :D

Stunning work Jacula. How exactly do you divide the work between digital and paper? I.e. is it mostly digital?
Title: Re: Jacula's Design And Character Concepts
Post by: Jacula on February 12, 2012, 12:14:35 pm
My thanks for the comments. I did indeed have Zak in mind whilst going about the design, coincidentally enough  ;)
-
I usually make use of my draw pad, Photoshop CS5 and various blending gadgets when I go about designs. Thus, overall or completely digital, indeed.
